I have been toying around with the idea of sci fi genre in MMOs, and I was wondering, are we ready for sci fi games like Earth and Beyond now? If it had been produced severeal years later and released in 07 or 08, would it have succeeded instead of getting cancelled by EA? Just some ideas of mine.

the game should have survived period. EA's excuse for the shut down of E&B was that they needed their "server space" for new and better games, brought to you right from EA's original IP's.
pack of assholes. hopefully they'll learn something and not do it to Biowares MMO.
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
Heh, I fully agree Sunrider, but what can we do? Last I knew, EA still wouldnt even sell the Earth and Beyond IP. Unless thats changed, its a sad day.
Earth and Beyond was terrible, I played it for a little while, just to get to know it, but it was such a terrible way they had implemented the "Elite" idea. EVE exists now . They did what E&B could have done but failed to deliver, amont that great graphics.
omg your kidding me, you have hopes that Bioware will have any innovattion in their games?? Bioware did one good thing, 10 years ago....
Mitara, I have to completely disagree with you. EVE is implemented terribly with the amount of EMPTY space you have to travel through, with no direct control of your ship, and combat that, as I have played and experienced, you just gotta glance at your computer and change targets. I will not debate PvP as I do not engange in it because I dont find nuking low level players fun. So, with all due respect Mitara, where you say EVE did what EnB could have, is an opinion. EnB was about combat, exploration, and trading, all of which, i believe in my opinion was executed perfectly.
EDIT: EVE's graphics really arent that great IMHO

Polar's got it right with this one...
EVE is a good game but it lacks anything to keep you interested unless you get into the big full-scale pvp battles. the graphics in eve are all chromatic and nothing really stands out to me in them. Every game does something poorly though and the "Elite" idea might not have gone over well, but the amount of ways to level, the various things you could do... there was just a lot more love and thought put into E&B.

Well, I never played E&B and don't really know anything about it but iwould like to comment on Sci-Fi and MMO's in general.
IMHO, Sci-Fi is still more or less untapped. We have a handful of games but most of them suffered some sort major technical issue. The proportion of generic fantasy grinders dwarfs and overshadows the few Sci-Fi games that are out there. I'm not going to run down the list but they all launched with major issues and the one that was on a good track put itself through a sex change operation and never really recovered.
This year we did get one attempt, TR, but honestly it just messed up on so many levels. Its EQ with guns. I don't want to get into a full critic of TR either. See any review.
So, until someone with some actual focus, originality and the ability to manage a budget, thats all we are going to see...more fantasy games with Sci-Fi skins and kill 10 space rats.
Making MMO's based on IP's is a catastophically bad idea but thats where MMO devs seem to want to take the genre right now.
