Hellgate: London in Tom’s Hardware “Worst Games of 2007″

I was hoping to resume newsing on HGG with a good piece of news, but heh, duty comes first. Ben Meier and Rob Wright, hosts of Second Take (Tom’s Hardware’s games-related show) had a talk about the worst games of 2007, and Hellgate: London is on the list, along with games such as L.A.I.R or Fantastic Four.

According to Meier and Wright, HG:L is “plagued by technical issues”, “crashes and glitches”. The biggest blow comes from Wright: “If it did not have these technical issues, would it be a great game ? No, but it might be better, might be a rental […]”.

It should be noted that this advice is based on Travis Meacham’s upcoming review, and that Meacham is “prepared to say that it will be one of his worst reviewed games of the year”.

Does it get any worse then being called the worst game of 2007?  I know it was a HORRIBLE release, but I was even shocked to see it named so.  The game is likely worse then I think because I'm a die hard diablo fan . . . blinded by the fires of hell . . . hoping they will return some day.

The comment is really not accurate at all. The game would be awesome and groundbreaking if they would fix all the bugs and implement auctions, mail, and soft cap respecs.

They are doing that, but it is taking some time. The sad part is that Wright's comments are only accurate up until patch .07 was launched in early December, showing that he really does not understand MMOs.

So basically... you're saying if they actually made a game... as in finished it...

They might actually have a game?

Awesome is like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder, so I won't discount that. But even with the things you mention adding, what the hell is groundbreaking about HG:L?

We don't effin care what other people say. Some gaming companies gave hellgate 4/10's, others gave it 8.5/10. We like it, if you don't then get the hell out of our internet.

And you could call hellgate ground breaking. It's the only game I know of where you have to option to play as a 3rd person hack n' slash or a FPS.

I would say HGL is quite entertaining. It offers a light-heart entertainment and I think it does it well. But I would not call this game ground-breaking or awesome.

That is peoples' whole problem. I made a simple comment and everybody nitpicks it instead of looking for the main idea. I do think that an FPS/MMO hybrid done correctly and completely, with full features, would be awesome and groundbreaking.

The main idea of what I was saying though, is that HGL would improve so drastically from the features I mentioned that it would be almost another game entirely.

I watched the video and Hellgate itself was not the Worst Game of the year. It was a title they mentioned when talking about the biggest disappointments. It was also not one of their choices, and was just mentioned because of an upcoming review of the game.

Here is a link to the review though.

What I Liked: This is a tough one. When the game is working the graphics are capable of some pretty pictures and the action is fun in spurts but there were few times when I wasn't complaining about the drab levels or the limited monster models.

What I Didn't Like: Client instability, managing inventory, the glut of worthless items, lack of quest variety, lack of monster variety, lack of level variety, the Evoker class as a whole, weak storytelling, no option to respec, repetitive combat, the terrible chat window and poor single-player support.

    ...

Final Score: 4.0 out of 10

If you essentially added so many features that it hasn't got and that you want, obviously it will be a much better game.

But since they didn't. Since it doesn't have them. It isn't.

There are far better FPS MMO's on the market than this. Far better offline FPS's too.

The only thing that astonsihes me is someone said it got an 8.5 in a review.  From who, ChuckleBrother Magasine?

Wow one of the worst games of 2007. i never would have expected that.

Ive been following this game since March '05 when it was merely concept art and an idea. after many years of wait i eagerly purchased a retail copy on the morning of its release. only to find that it was in really bad shape.

Great idea. unfortunately a bit half assed. however you swing it HGL is still not complete even with the Stonehenge patch.

its just a really poor effort from FSS. it coulda been epic but it wasnt and it was noone elses fault but FSS.

I mean i just repair PCs for a living. Im no games Developer, but i would never release a game in that state.

To be frank between writing the first line of this post and this line ive realised that HGL probably does deserve to be in the worst games of '07. Or at least receive an award for the biggest gaming anti-climax of '07
