If it's Cryptic Studios or Blizzard, I'm sure they will do it justice. I can't vouche for many more than that.

    Hi all,

There "may" be something to a rumor that cryptic isn't the ones who picked up the STO Ip, afterall.

Bethesda has created and online/hosting division at the end of summer/start of spring 2007.   As of 2weeks ago, 'Bethesda online' has still been hiring in many key positions for MMO development and hosting.

They already have many single player games in the works with the ST Ip and aren't new to the ST Ip either, if I recall corectly.

It just might be that STO is there break into the MMO market. ../shrug

P.S.-   Ahem,  Dearest STO Gods - .,.Please bring in playable characters and get on the launch of this bad boy, already.  ...I'zz wanna be Star Fleet 'nigh Star Fleet Hardware whilst snackin' on teh space doritos.(ships only, lol, might as well be Mr. Tri-corder)

    * I do not need to know how to make a better game than you. I just need to know how to cancel my subscription. -Antarious(a slight misquote but the sentiment remains)

i dont know why you wouldnt... i think star trek needs to make a comeback. but with the problems that their current holder has caused (the star trek owners not the game developers) they will have a long way to go... the work may be hard, but well worth it

    Greetings,

There are few people who want a Star Trek MMO more than I.  I have been looking forward to getting back into the ST universe since the end of Starfleet Command 3, which is a while ago.

My point, which you seemed to have missed, is that I hope the game is a hardcore sim with Romulan, Klingon and Federation playable characters and ships.

For example, EVE is a highly successful, but not highly popular hard-core sci-fi game.  I would much rather have 200,000 ppl playing a very complex Star Trek sim than 3 million playing some Star Trek flavored™ piece of space garbage.

I have seen what Star Trek Flavored™ games look like.  Legacy, a thousand curses upon Maddoc software.  It is not pretty.

So my vote is for a FULLY realized Star Trek universe, with cloaking pain in the ass Romulans (thats me!) Brutal Klingons and Federation Boy Scouts.

im sorry i missed your point... i do understand where you're coming from, but why cant there be a mix... a popular star trek game that stays hardcore and true to the star trek series... instead of some 'star trek flavored game' as you so efficiently put it

Bethesda has been getting ready for an mmo long before PE/P2 lost the license to Star Trek. Bethesda could be getting ready to do Fallout Online, since the property is theirs and the license they gave Interplay to make the mmo has not shown any fruition. Their contract with Interplay gave Interplay a finite amount of time ( 2 years, I believe ) from the time Bethesda  bought the rights to Fallout and licensed Interplay for the mmo to get the money and get the game in development, or the license reverted to Bethesda.

Interplays time is just about up, and no mmo in development. So I'm thinking Bethesda knows their going to be the ones making the mmo, not Interplay ( and thank God for small favors, as Interplay sucks big time ).

Bethesda also has the option of making an Elder Scrolls mmo, which has been asked for repeatedly by Bethesda fans and would be alot easier to make ( since they obviously know everything about the Elder Scrolls lore ) and less of a pain as far as giving Star Trek fans what they want as well as attract non-Star Trek fans to the game also.

So, in my humble opinion, Bethesda is not, and will not, be the Star Trek mmo devs.

It would be nice to have a scaling level of difficulty, or even better a bifurcated system, one for casual players and one for advanced.  I doubt many people would like the implications of a bifurcated system.

There is also the question of the cleverness of the programmers to come up with such a system.

I only hope that they are reading our posts and realize what a fatal mistake making Star Trek a sort of WoW in space would be.

yeah... that would be nice. if they could change the level of play between ensign, commander, and admiral... that would be a pretty clever way to read that

  • StarDaggerStarDagger Member Posts: 135

It would be nice to have people who were Captains and Admirals have to actually earn those ranks and have progressively more complex gameplay and responsibility.  That would be a great counter to the 13 yr old "Admiral" plague that afflicts many Star Trek games, and other mmos as well (though their problem would more likely be 70th level 13 yr old).

Star Trek is a rich and complex universe, part of its success is that it never talked down to its audience, and in its better episodes forced people to think, or rethink, their prejudices.

i dont quite understand what you're trying to say there, but im sure if i read it about a hundred more times, I'll understand. about that Star Trek is complex and stuff thing... i totally agree with you. the better episodes did make us think and made us question our own prejiduces... i try and live without prejiduce. star trek is what we want the world to be like in another 100 years. to quote Gene Roddenberry, "In the 23rd century, there will be no hunger and there will be no greed." I truly believe that if we work at it, this could be true not only in the 23rd century, but maybe the 22nd century too and hell, maybe in the ending of the 21st century.

may you all live long and prosper,

    Greetings,

Best intel reports that Cryptic is developing the game.  As far as a release date, good luck.

woohoo... i was hoping cryptic would get it. i like city of heroes, and i hope they bring star trek online the best game out there

  • DracusDracus Member Posts: 1,449

It is not Bethesda, since that company is based on the East Coast of the US and not in the "Bay Area."

In short of an Official Announcement or a Disgruntled Employee spilling the beans to multiple reporting sources, the developer is Cryptic.

    And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

Bethesda has earned the eternal enmity of most hard core St fans due to the Legacy Debacle.

Lets hope it is far from their unfit hands.

has anyone heard anything new about Star Trek Online... im really hoping that this will come out sooner or later... sooner rather than later, but i'd rather it take a while and be awesome then come out soon and be completely crappy

  • StarDaggerStarDagger Member Posts: 135

December 21st, 2012  : mayan calendar ends (not end of the world like some uninformed ppl think)

IF, and that is a big if, the game is going to come out, it will be by then.

    Enjoy.

That date and all the folklore that surrounds it has always baffled me.... i guess this isn't the place to discuss it though.... lol... let's hope it comes out

  • StarDaggerStarDagger Member Posts: 135

    Greetings,

I simply hope that it comes out as Star Trek ™ not something star trek flavored.

They need to realize that the Federation alone at release is going to fail utterly.  Adding in the Klingons and Romulans would make the game much more attractive.

that was the plan for the original game, wasn't it? to be able to play different species... i think there was klingon, vulcan, cardassian, some guy who reminded me one of the xindi types from Enterprise, and human.... im not sure about romulan
