So, guess I may buy this game being the hopeless MMO addict I am... but I want to know - what prospects are there really for pvp?
I see all this siege warfare stuff for guilds, which smacks to me of "if you aren't in one of the big guilds you miss that content". (sigh). Then there is drunken brawling... which sound like duels to me. And I guess some battleground type affairs.
But will there be any random world pvp, or world pvp that non 65-hour a week guild people will be able to meaningfully engage in?
Basically, if there is the prospect for that, I'm in. If not... guess I have to wait a little longer for WAR?

You can always join a casual guild. Not all guilds are WoW style hardcore guilds.
But if you don't want to join a guild there's something for you: mercenary system. Guilds can pay you money to fight in their wars.
There's also FFA servers, FFA areas on the PvE servers, and classic arenas.
I like the idea.
FFA makes me happy; although I confess a liking for realm vs realm... something attractive about being on a 'side'... still; this is encouraging, and makes me want to try it.
First off, there is Siege Warfare. It is not restricted to 2 guilds, whoever is in the area can join in and fight for whoever they want, or even as a mercenary for cash if a guild has that option available. You don't need to be in a big guild by any means.
Drunken brawling isn't quite like duels. What you basically do is choose the right combination of alcohol to win, a level 20 can win against a level 80 if they pick correctly. I don't know full details on this aspect yet.
There's also CTF kind of like WoW's battlegrounds, pretty self explanatory here.
To PvP you don't need to be in a Siege, Drunken Brawling, or CTF, there are other area's to PvP, especially on PvP servers, which AoC will have.
You don't have to spend 65 hours a week to participate in a nice amount of PvP by any means.
RvR I admit is a cool idea, however I do not prefer this system. In AoC, something that will be nice is that you're not restricted to a certain Faction, Race, or any other set of people, if you see somebody that you don't like you can go and try to kill them, whereas in RvR I don't believe this is possible.

I'm definitely reserving judgement about the mercenary system. On paper, its a great idea, but I'm really curious how it gets implemented. Seeing as how it is a ticket system, I'm really wondering how it'll work out.
My route? Instead of aiming at Battlekeeps, I'd much rather focus on Towers, and Resource Nodes, more freqent PvP, smaller guilds, that sort of thing.
i will be picking up both AoC and WAR. My guild isnt going to play AoC so this does worry me. I got high hopes for WAR PvP just dont think AoC will get me hooked enough not to play with my real group of friends.
Personally, I am way more excited about the PvP prospects in Age of Conan than I am about WAR. PvP against enemies that you know is so much more enjoyable than instanced PvP against a bunch of random players on the other side. That is what I always hated about PvP in games like WoW and what WAR sounds like it is going to be. Instanced PvP is just so impersonal and the objectives are so meaningless.
Age of Conan sounds like it will have incredible PvP since we will be fighting for territory and the face of the game world will change in a very real way as a result of our actions. This is what has been missing in all the cookie-cutter panzy MMORPGs I have played in the last few years. When there are no real consequences and the game world never truly changes as a result of players' actions, the games become little more than a mindless online sandbox with a long and boring grind. I am hoping that AoC will be truly different in this respect!
That is sweet, I'm a merc by heart.
If you actually read or watched anything to do with WAR pvp from the actual source aka Warhammeronline.com you'd know that Instanced PvP is actually a small part. Every Teir has large open pvp areas and Keeps in those areas in which the sides can constantly siege over. Not to mention when you get to a City Siege on the enemy you fully take over THEIR city for a period of time if you manage to get through the gates. Hell the Keeps even change what they look like depending on the guild that controls it and what faction they belong too. WAR's pvp isn't static or cookie cutter and funnily enough its one of the biggest defining parts of the game that keep it from being a WoW clone.
AoC's pvp system sounds just as cool as WAR's does. Drunken brawls always fun *eyes light up*

Yea, from what I hear there are open grounds as you level and if you want the best hunting area's it's pvp land. I like what I hear from both WAR and AoC.
From what I understand about AoC, on the other hand, these lines are not pre-drawn. Players will have the ability to determine these politics themselves. The ability to create your own kingdom and conquer territory based upon player-politics is what I have long felt has been missing from the majority of MMORPGs. Unless I have totally misunderstood WAR, I didn't think there was any of that in their game.
Personally I hate politics so Guilds vs Guilds has never appealed to me. I'd be most likely to take up a mercanary approach in Conan.
I'm all for Realm vs Realm ...but thats the huge difference between AoC & Warhammer. One is more racially based and the other is more about personal to guild personal gain. It all comes down to what appeals to you most .. working for your country, working for yourself, or working for a bunch of other players. Personally I'm not into working for a bunch of turkey's most likely to turn their back on me. I've been burned a few times in the past by guilds so atleast in WAR I can just focus on killing anyone thats allied against my race instead of worrying about taking on a giant guild that might smash my foot in the dirt.
I just wanted to clarify with my first post that WAR's pvp system is not Instanced Wowairzed pvp battleground crap as you almost unintentionally regulated it too. It doesnt have the whole buidl your own kingdom approach which generally appeals to guild minded folks (which is a turn off to me since I'm not into the whole be a cog in our guild life style) but its not WoW battleground instance crap.
You will make enemies, you'll see the players from the otherside enough to have grudges against particular badasses on the field, it doesn't take much to track someone's name and hate them for life as long as they're on the other team .
Both AoC & WAR's pvp systems are great systems it just comes down to how you like your PvP, for me I prefer not having to work for guilds, I like to work for the over all 'good' or 'goal' of my country without having to rely on a specific set of my countrymen. But atleast AoC has an answer to its overly Guild ambitious approach with Mercanaries otherwise I wouldn't be interested at all.
