What the...did something change here?

Alright, I haven't been keeping up much with AC2 I'll admit, so my excuse for this post is ignorance. But seriously, I was always under the impression that my ignorance about this game was bliss. Since it came out and most players' high hopes were shattered, I haven't heard any noticeably different things about this game that would lead me to believe it had improved any. However, there's been this sudden resurgance of advertisement for AC2, and new people reacting favorably to it, saying things have changed...

And it's #2 on the MMORPG list, which either means it IS a lot better, or some fanboys have been HARD at work...

So, what's changed? I'm a HUGE fan of the original Asheron's Call, and I'd desperately like to believe the second one is good so I can get some of that old AC nostalgia. But until now I'd been under the impression such a hope was mere falsehood and just me kidding myself...was I right? Or has this game really changed for the better? If so, how?

IS MY BELOVED DERETH SAVED??

If your a rabid AC1 fan you probably still won't like AC2. AC2 is still quite different from AC1 but by no means a bad game.

Microsoft sold AC franchise to Turbine.

Turbine has turned the game around in a wonderful direction and they have done some awesome things with the game.  They have implemented hundreds of quests (innovative and epic ones)

    http://ac2vault.ign.com/?dir=quests

It is hard to list everything they have added to this game because they have done so much so I will tell you some of the larger points.

Kingdom Sanctuary and Forts with dynamic kvk

New Continent - Arrmora (Marre Lassel)

    Allegiance Halls

Revamp of many classes and crafting

It is very different from Ac1 but it is still very enjoyable.  Come slay the Olthoi with us!!! =)

There have been many many changes to the Asheron's Call 2. Most of which Storm has listed above me. The best change, and one of the biggest would have to be the change to the Crafting system. Crafting 2.0 is alot less of a hassle and much more enjoyable. Miners are raking in piles of golds while crafters are busy crafting away. Loot is more usefull now, I almost always check and compare my weapons and armor with what I loot to see if there is an item in the loot that I can upgrade to. All in all it is a much different game then it was say when the "Veterans" played it, and for the better. There isn't much I dislike of what has been done to the game. There's still more to come and one of the best aditions would have to be Vendors. Finally somehwere to go and buy stuff.image That's not do out for a few more months though, but the boy's at Turbine have been busy.image

Yes, the game has changed drastically. We've had a slew of amazing patches this year. I've seen people go "This is the best patch ever!" after pretty much all of them (with the exception of May, which was quite light). It all started in December, in my opinion. The hero system last september was good, but it had something lacking. With the December patch and the patches after that, things have been really gotten alot better.

I'll add that AC1 and AC2 are still two very different games. I for one enjoy AC2 alot more these days than I did six months ago.

The fanbois have been hard at work. Taking a look at Turbine message boards, there are calls for fans to come here and submit a review. And a LOT have.

There is a lot of people giving AC2 a second chance right now.  Turbine is offering a 15 day trial and we are even running ads for that here at MMORPG.com.  I have not personally played the game since launch - but the impressioin I am getting is that much has changed.

We have a reviewer working on a review for AC2 - so hopefully he will shed some light on "what is up in AC2" image

I'm fairly shocked that you guys actually didn't have a review already done for this game because it is a very current game.  However I am GLAD you didn't have one done because it will score much higher than it did at launch lol. =)

Very good point Storm, had there been an out dated review up on this site for Asheron's Call 2, many people here may have not even given this game a fighting chance. This game is nothing of what it was when it first launched. It has been improved greatly. Someone that had played the game say six months ago won't be totally lost if they choose to return back to this game, but they will have a much more pleasurable experience while in game.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The thing is, when you compare this game to most of the other crap out there right now it's actually not bad.

I played this for a few months shortly after release and I found it to be a great game. Then I switched to more recent releases and after awhile I actually found myself looking for an AC2 type of experience.

The game is solid. There really aren't too many issues with gameplay, at least none that I can think of. The community is great, and the quests are pretty enjoyable. I found the overall experience to be far more enjoyable and memorable than SWG (I guess that's not saying much) or any other MMORPG I've played since then.

One think I have to say though, is that the crafting system did suck. I think they may have made some recent changes, but I'm not too sure on that.

There has been only ONE 4th Generation Tolkien-themed/D&D themed MMORPGs released so far. And that is Asheron's Call 2. It has now been out for over 1 year and 6 months. It is in solid release. And it right now has 6k to 12k players (heheh.)

Horizons is still a newly released game. Still going through its growing pains. It is roughly 5 months old.

AC2 is still operating in a vacume. When the rest of the 4th Generation Tolkien-themed/D&D themed MMORPGs get released then you will see how well AC2 will really, really, be doing!

WoW, Lin2, EQ2, GW, HZ........ they will be counted when they all reach their 1 year prime. When they reach their 1 year prime see if they have more then 12,000 players playing them LOLOL!

What the h*** is a "4th Generation Tolkien-themed/D&D themed MMORPG"? image

  • SkaelSkael Member Posts: 115

MMORPGs are divided into generations related to when they were released. EQ, AC1, UO were first generation, then there three generations after that.. other 4th generation MMOGs I believe are CoH, Lineage 2, and SWG.

Fantasy themed/Dungeons & Dragons themed means elves, dwarves, bows, shields, armor, castles, quests, that sort of thing basically.. as opposed to superheroes in a modern city, freaky anime people with ornate outfits, or and laser guns/spaceships etc.
