Why an MMO?

KnightblastKnightblast Member UncommonPosts: 1,787

I have played a lot of MMOs over the years, and I enjoy them, as you can imagine, but every time I dip my toe back in the world of SP games, I come across the same question:  why play an MMO?

It seems to me that there is a tradeoff in MMOs between (1) playing with/against other human beings and (2) having the kind of gameplay that SP games offer.  The question is: is this tradeoff really worthwhile?

For example, I was recently playing The Witcher, which to be honest I am finding far more compelling in terms of gameplay than any MMO available.  Better graphics, story, gameplay, the works, really.  Of course, everything around me is AI, there is no chatbox filled with other players, and noone else I am passing by in the game world.  But are those aspects really worth the tradeoff for the typically repetitive and time-consuming gameplay of MMOs, never mind their monthly subscription fees.

Is the tradeoff of MMOs really worth it?  Is it worth playing games that are going to be lagging in gameplay most SP games for most of their lifespans simply to have coooperative/competitive gameplay?

just like i have more then one friend, I find I like having more then one game.  I get my online fix with mmo and content with single player.  MMO isn't that bad if you play it few times a week... I have a good job so the fee is a joke.

Im sure all those good things a SP game provides will be in MMOs in the near future.  Its already showing with the Agency and maybe conan.  I think Bioware will realy bring something new to mmos.  Plus SP games ends quickly with a few updates and mmos last for many years with alot of updates.  You cant expect everything all at once, especialy for a genre thats still very young compared to other genres.

I hope you are right, I'd love to see more sp content with MMO abilities.  AoC has the first part 1-20 sp, if that says anything
