V:SoH Discontinued

Best buy, largest electronic retailer, will no longer be carrying Vanguard.

If that doesn't say something about the future of the game, nothing does.

Don't believe me.  Try to pull it up on their website, or buy it in store.  If they have it in store it will only be 1-2 copies, and you can ask an employee to look in their system to see if it has been discontinued.

I don't say this as a hater, but someone who recently started playing the game.  I gave my buddy key to a friend whom then decided he wanted to pick the game up, but only to find it's not sold on shelves any longer.  Yeah, yeah you can buy it from the SoE store....etc.....that's not the point!  The point is a game 1 yr old, especially a mmo, should not be discontinued so early in it's life.

Pretty sure you can buy it direct from SOE using the new SOE Launcher currently in Beta, so when that comes out of Beta and gets its bugs sorted then i'm almost certain that will be the main form of buying the game.

However its no suprise that the game has been discontinued - they are relaunching the title at some point this year, which will most likely include a new retail box inc. a more up to date version etc.

    I wouldn't wait on that...

There will be no "relaunch". The most SOE is shelling out is a WinBack promotional campaign similar to EQII. They've already said this.

Well I have to honestly say you can buy Vanguard at the sony store.

Unless you found a collectors edition there was nothing really special in the box (unless you wanted the box art).  Topped off by the fact... the download won't be any longer than if you install those launch discs and then patch.

Do they have any other stores in the area?

We have a gamestop brick and mortar that still has a SWG collectors edition... well heck they still have a AC2 box on the self there lol...

if it's only from Best Buy I don't think it matters, I don't know where you live but where I live their selection of games suck ass anyway and they never have anything I want.. it's only if all the retailers discontinue VG, then that's defenitely a sign of closing down.

i saw 3 copies of the collectors edition last week at game stop for 20 bucks .

Which means the limited edition CE run is still on shelves a year after the fact. Not necessarily good news.

haha.. I don't know what you are talking about, you were still able to find EQ2 CE's in retail stores until just recently, and only for around $30.

This development is neither here nor there.

Fury was never in the shops in the UK anyway and that still sold.

Best Buy only carries what is currently hot and selling, so its not your best source for older game releases.  I'll bet you'd be hard pressed to find any game more than a year old there except for some of the classics like Starcraft /Warcraft III Battlechests.

But we all know VG is hardly a stellar performer, and the game will live in the niche world and be sold online for the most part going forward.  That's OK, you can't buy EVE online in the stores anymore yet the game continues to roll on.

Heh, I was in Best Buy a few weeks ago and they still had pre-order boxes for Gods and Heroes.....I wouldn't trust any retail store regarding PC game titles.

Vanguard's SKU has been deleted from our system since September. Whatever you see in stores are what we've had left over. At my store we've had the same one copy since august.

haha. That's ok most people don't know what I'm talking about. I'll try to make it more clear. VG had a CE run of 50k copies and EQ II had a CE run of 100k or more. I don't have first hand knowledge of the EQ II run but it  seems a likely number. On the one hand, you have an established franchise on the other you have a scrappy, unproven, newcomer. One publishes a lot of copies of the CE and the other does not.

To laugh at my comment, is to laugh at the game itself. Unestablished, unknown games shouldn't offer CE's no matter who produces them. In the final analysis, they're still bad games who charge you more for nothing in exchange.

ok, thank you for pointing it out for me since I am obviously too clueless.

now I wonder, how the hell did I even turn on my computer this morning and manage to make it to MMORPG.com?

To be honest, I hope Vanguard continues on the path it's on now.  It's really grown into a great game, and there's nothing more I'd love than for the retards that frequent the "more popular" mmos out there, to simply stay away and let we "few" enjoy our world.

That being said, yes the game had a dismal, DISMAL launch.  I almost gave up on it myself, but SOE has really done some great stuff here, and continues to make some really great improvements.  I never thought I'd hear myself say it but, I'm glad SOE bought out Vanguard.  :D

Try and find any SOE MMO in a store here, nothing.

No EQ, no EQ2, no MXO, no SWG, no VG, not even gametime cards.

Those same stores do carry pretty much every NCsoft title, Blizzards stuff, and pretty much every other MMO that has a retail box or gametime card. (hell they even have some AA copies on the shelf lol)

    Past: EQ,EQ2,SWG,MXO,Vanguard,PotBS,PS,CoX,GW,RG:TR,L2,Aion,AA,LotRo,DDO,EVE,WoW,CO,STO,P1999,FE,MCO,TDU,RIFT(beta),Perpetuum.
    Present: ...
    Future: TDU2,TOR,GW2.
    Wishlist: Motor City Online Remake.

That does not mean anything, I saw 8 CE boxes for the Burning Crusades last week at Frys.

I love elitism, it makes it so easy to identify the people you would never want to play an MMO with.

Best Buy is like one of the worst places to look for games.   They're an electronic's retailer not a GAME retailer.   Hell even their DVD section sucks in comparison to some internet websites.

If you want Vanguard that bad http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=646264

Here go to your local Gamestop Nations largest Game Retailer (and a bunch of B******* but I digress :) ))

Most of the local gamestops don't carry VG anymore either.  Even when the website says they have a copy on the shelves they usually don't.

Gamestop almost seems like they are phasing out PC games though.

You can still find plenty of World of Warcraft boxes at Best Buy.  They keep what's hot and popular, no matter how old it is.  What does that say about Vanguard, hmmm?

I do hope VG doesn't close, it will hopefully keep the majority of the hardcore elitists occupied so they won't bother us so much in our more casual friendly games, such as WoW and WAR.  As it is, there's plenty enough eliticism going on with WoW's raiding regime.

With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

That VG is not hot and popular. Why? Did you think otherwise?

One thing many haters of this game do not want to acknowledge or maybe do not realize is that many of us consider Vanguard the best MMO on the market by far despite all its flaws.

Yes it is a shame that Vanguard does not have a high population.  But the game is slowly growing.  There are more than enough people on Seradon now and if anything the server is overcrowded.  Rgeardless fo whtehr VG has 20k or 20 millon it makes little difference to me.  I find the game to be superb and lots of fun.  The only downside I see to the low population is the slow progression in development since SOE took over and the skeleton crew size of the dev team.  Other than that the population makes little difference.  SOE did a fine job finishing APW and more raid content is on the way.

Vanguard has the best combat and crafting systems on the market.  It has the most diverse and best classes of any game out there.  The world is huge with an epic feeling.  They did an amazing job with AOW.  No its not a perfect game but its a very good game but with many flaws.  Yes SOE has done little to nothing since they took over and one can only lament how much better this game would be if Sigil could have gotten an extension from MS on the balloon payment due last April that forced them to sell out.  But slowly the game is progressing and despite what the haters say many of us love Vanguard and are very grateful to Sigil and Brad for the work they did putting this game together.

Vanguard is simply the best game on the market now and I am guessing when AoC and Warhammer are released next X-mas or in 2009 Vanguard will still be the best game on the market.  Although I hope both AoC and Warhammer are great games and exceed my expectations.  We could all benefit by more good games on the market other than Vanguard.

Vanguard would be a great game, if you $3500 to drop on a new system, but it's too much of a memory hog to run on most systems, so it'll never have a very large community. If you don't have many people playing the game people can't find groups, and in Vanguard grouping is important. If it were a bit larger, and had more monster infested areas, (I played the game for a while. I am an explorer and the size of the areas that were set up for housing, and monster free were huge and greatly cut down on the exploritory part of the game.) it would be cool for soloing, but it's not.

It's not too late for the game, but it needs to be slimlined and repackaged. Drop the graphics level a bit, toss in some more monsters, get a more compelling backstory and re-release it with a new name.
