so far, I have been very interested in this game due to it's potential goals with combat, and environment, as well as pvp (which I love pvp systems).
Also, there is a lot of things that take me a step back like: instances sound as though they may be over-used.
The dev's are shady on details and no truely "open" beta...
Shady system req's
ect...
I just want to know if the goods outweigh the bads... I'm really on the fence here, because even the slightes odor or stink, and I (as well as many others) will hang onto our money and wait for the other more "standard" mmo's that have big releases in the first half of '08 like the "dreaded" WAR... *duck

The devs have stated there will be an open beta. They have also elaborated on the performance of the games engine on several occasions. Just because you haven't looked for the information doesn't mean its not there. You only need to go read the Blog section of this site to see the developer has already answered your questions.

He stated that there won't be a truely "open" beta and it's an opinion one could still have even after the recent statements. IMO the beta that was announced isn't an open beta although it was announced as one. Open beta for me just means that everyone that wants to have a peek in the game will get a chance to do so. The announced "open beta" for me rather seems like a larger closed beta with tens of thousands of ppl (still probably a rather low percentage considering the mass of beta applications).
So yes, the lack of a real open beta for me definately is one bad thing about AoC although I will most likely give it a try anyway.
Well, I would have to say that open betas are a dieing breed. Back when MMORPGs had 200K players targeted. Open betas would be acceptable but when you look at the target people now days. You could do an open beta an have 8 million people do it, that would kill your beta completely. Now I know that is the a high number but AOC and Warhammer are both very highly regarded games for this year so they would have insane numbers if they open beta tested. So large closed betas are better to control the flow on the servers. As beta builds are not going to have the hardware of the live (production environments).
Of course this based off my background in IT but never the less, it's all about the $$, WOW will not open beta ever again, they will not have the servers to allow people to test the lich or WOW 2 if it ever comes when they have 8 mill people waiting for it. That all costs $$ to setup and support.. Lots of people will want to try the game out to see what it's like, I know I do.. But many people could get a bad vibe in open beta as performance will not be good in an open beta and VG spoiled the arguement that open beta is for performance testing and tuning with high loads, even though that is what it is for, to see what happens when you beat the crap out of it so you can fix it.
i think the launch will have some medium problems which will get sorted out and fixed due time, and thats really fine with me, i have other things too than only gaming and i can really live with some minor bugs for few days/weeks since i know funcom will try to fix them as soon as possible.
for those people who want to play the game but dont want to get terribly disapointed, you should just wait and read our comments when we have tried the beta and the actual game after the launch and then decide if you want to give it a try...
