10 hours until the dev's are "in our chatroom" and the game still sucks

I am personally looking forward to asking some questions about this game.  I don't like to disrespect people, and I won't, but I can't wait to see how they react to someone pointing out their bad spots, and asking why they aren't being fixed on a "beta-timetable" where changes can spurn over night.

Plus I am generally looking forward to heaing the back and forth between PotBS faithful and the dev's to see how well they listen to their supporters, and then what comes of that.

I hope it goes well, and we all get warm fuzzies, but as of right now, the game still sucks.

ps.  If this game stops sucking at any time, I WILL pull these posts down and they will ney-return!

I would love to be able to attend that chat, but sadly it looks like I can't...

I tried to get it to work during the Spellborn Dev Chat and this work computer just isn't up to the job (or maybe it's the connection?)

In any case, I would REALLY be greatful if you guys would see that my questions from here

    http://mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/162452

    are asked?

I think the Mods here ask them automatically - but I am not sure?

There has been almost no information at all on the Oceanic / Australian release and we were told that we would be provided with this information in order to make an 'informed decision'.  Well, it's time.

I cant believe I am actually saying this, but..

smitty, give us a recap on why YOU think the game sucks, please.. apparently you sound like your not part of any type of society in the game and looking for a Fnastasy/Pirates of the Carribean type gamestyle format. But please, refresh me on your dislikes about PotBS.

Smitty bringing up your concerns is of course valid, but you really should try and offer ideas on how to make those problems better in your mind.  Don't like the missions or avatar combat, than explain what would be a better system.

And I can't wait to tell them how much the game rocks and how through 38 levels in beta and now 21 levels in pre-boarding, I am still having an awesome time and can't wait for launch.

No flame intended, but what points are you looking to bring up? (just curious)

Sorry, I should have re-listed some of my points from other posts addressing individual problems.  for a more detailed discussion, look up these particular posts, but I'll try to sum it up quick.  Keep in mind most of these issues were addressed by the dev's in their published report on the game, and they promised to make quick and decisive changes.  Which is my primary gripe in the following areas.

    1.  Most importantly, catch avatar combat up with naval combat!  It's blatently unbalanced in pvp, and it simply is not a good system as is.

    2.  Missions are highly repetitive: 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3, escape, catch ect.  They have more variety already in the game, they just don't use it very often.

    3.  Open world sailing is neither fun NOR realistic.  They are working on this mentally, just ready to see some changes physically. IE: weather

    4.  Crew regenerates, ships fix themselves, yet the standard cannonballs are not unlimited, and in fact are quite a burden.  gunpowder: unlimited, noob-shot: unlimited therefore it is not a realism issue, it is a tedium issue.  They could make inferior cannonballs, give them standard range, and this issue would disappear.

    5.  Get SOE under control.  This company is managing to affect server stability, and other non-development issues in this game, which is not acceptable!

    6. (getting a little more picky here)  Excessive loading, crowded ports, and not enough open sea encounters...  Now I know, no one wants to get chain ganked by pirates, but in the pirate world.... ganking was the way business was done.  To stay true to the genre, there has to be a lot of open world opportunities that there just isn't currently.

And that is pretty much it.  I think the game could have some real potential, but they will have to make some key improvements BEFORE launch, or it will definately suffer.  Again, these issues are shared among many people that had beta-tested the game, and many were admittedly lacking by the dev's with the promise of listening to the player base.  And all I'm saying is that thus-far I haven't seen the results I have expected.

Fair enough. It's the newest part of the game, they will work on it.
    2.  Missions are highly repetitive: 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3, escape, catch ect.  They have more variety already in the game, they just don't use it very often.
Missions are like that in all MMOs. I do think that better AI would make things better in that sense.
    3.  Open world sailing is neither fun NOR realistic.  They are working on this mentally, just ready to see some changes physically. IE: weather
I don't see how it's fun or not fun. It's traveling, it is what it is. I don't see how any change could improve it. I also don't see how realism matters. I mean, do you want it to take months to travel across the sea? Though, weather might be cool, but unnecessary. That time could be better spent.
I'd like it to be a little more harsh as well, similar to the ships in EVE. If you want to repair your ships armor, you do it yourself. Crew could be made more interesting, like a sellable good. Heck, make them like an item with stats. Some types have benefits and cost more, other crew are basic and cheap. I'd like more things to be manual, not automatic. I want to manage my crew and repairs.
    5.  Get SOE under control.  This company is managing to affect server stability, and other non-development issues in this game, which is not acceptable!
I'm not sure what you're refering to. I thought they only handle billing and promotion.

I was impressed with load times. Most are instant, if not 3 seconds. I also don't see how having lots of other players around is a bad thing. If it was just you why not play a single player game?

Smitty doesn't like this game, yet he takes a lot of energy to bash it on these forums. I get the feeling he works for a rival game company. Thoughts?

Not one rival company cares about PoTBoringSea. The market for this game is too small.

With only 4 posts made I'm surprised you're the one accusing someone.

This isn't the FoH boards where people suck up to dev, this isn't the SOE boards where every thread gets locked.

People can basically say what they want about a game here if they do it without cussing too much, that includes trashing it. New concept to you apparently.

Does anyone have a link to the transcript of today's Dev Chat?

I am looking for it ....

    Thanks in advance

    Nevermind - found it.

[FLS]isildur: Second, we're moving towards a more tactical experience. Some of the features under discussion include officers you can hire, train, and develop over time, crew that you can customize and equip, and a more robust system for commanding these AI allies.

I see this as a great addition, but as a key system, it should be added by launch for a good release.

[FLS]isildur: Heh. We just had a design review meeting right before this chat about population balance tools we're working on. The short answer is 'yes'; the longer answer is that we've got some fairly complex plans for addressing server balance without being punitive, and we also believe that (as the Spanish experience in Beta demonstrated) a well-organized and dedicated nation can still win, even with...

    [FLS]isildur: ...lower population.

this is their way of saying that they did not think of this until RIGHT NOW, and they have a mystery plan in place to give the under-dog a chance...  by no means even footing.  So if nationality doesn't matter to you, join the faction that is dominant on your server!

At least they aren't being punative, I think that is lame.  Also giving every other faction a bonus is the same as punishing the original faction, in case some games didn't get it.

Overall, a very entertaining chat, however most player concerns aren't going to be released with the discs, but will come at some patch "3 months" down the road.

So the price for the finished game went up from 50 to about 95 bucks all paid for by the pre-order players fee's.  Thanks pre-orders, when I inevitably hunker down and buy this game (when it is finished and/or selling for 19.99) I will appreciate your sacrifice.

ps.  A pvp server could be cool, but it will depend on the community.  I would like to think it WOULD be cool, but that's a dangerous assumption in a niche game.

That's a pretty defensive response - Smitty, is that you?

uh, no, I'm not that emotionally involved in this game (or mmo's) to quabble.  I am financially involved in some however, and I don't like seeing people lower their standards (or lack there of).
