I am thinking about picking this game up again. I have followed the development of this game for quite some time and even participated in the beta. At the time though my computer was sub-par. I have recently gotten a new computer with great specs, so I thought of giving it a try again.
How are the population levels in this game? Have they increased? I heard that they merged the servers, so I am sure that helped, but I don't want to start this game up if I am going to be wandering around in ghost towns for the first 20lvls.

The server merge did indeed help with the "ghost town" issues. And I think there has also been an influx of people trying/coming back to the game since SOE took over and started making improvements.
I would go with Seradon as a server as it's the most populated. I never had an issue finding players in low level areas while there.
I could be hallucinating, but I think the freebie time for returning vets ends in 3 days.
Did you quit more than 60 days back? You might have a reactivated freebie account running.
I wouldn't actually consider myself a returning vet. I never actually got to play the game much. I spent more time trying to tweak the video settings than anything.
What he means is that if you actually bought the game when it was released and have a key, that they were giving away 30 days free to anyone who had quit playing.
If you only played in Beta, then this doesn't apply to you.
Gotcha. No I never actually bought the game, so this doesn't apply to me. I have a friend who recently returned to give it a try and he told me that most of the current players were higher levels and he rarely found anyone lower level to group with. That is my biggest concern.
He must not have been playing on Seradon then. I played about a month or so ago and tried a few of the different starting areas and all of them had a decent number of people around. At the very least, the immediate starting area may have only had a few people but as soon as you get to the first major town (which is only an hour of so of playing) you will see a good amount of people running around.
I can't speak on the other servers though.
Has anyone heard recently how many subs Vanguard has?
My personal observation is that most people just solo the very early levels and don't group much until mid teens.
Some nights I can get a group and other night I can't. It is a big game with not enough people, but with a little effort you can network people to play with enough.
I don't have a complete rundown, but there are armor / weapon quests in Qalia and Thestra kind of alternating every 5 levels. EX: Renton Keep (Thestra) around 15ish, Hunters League and Coterie Infinitum Sanctuary (Qalia) around 20ish, TK? (Thestra) around 25ish, Cragwind (Qalia) around 30ish, Vol Tuniel (Thestra) around 35ish, and that's as far as I have gotten, but I believe Wardship of Celestine Moon is the 40ish one.
The last figure most of the community wouldn't argue with each other about was round 20k.
But to the point you will never get the answer to your question as Sony keeps the subscription numbers of their mmo's under lock n' key, under a dragon, underground.... (many people died to get us that info)
Speaks volumes about their mmo sub numbers an the buisness ethics Sony participates in.
I don't think subscriber numbers are covered anywhere in ethics...
Now, if you want to talk about the bait and switch they did with Trials of Obi Wan expansion and NGE, that would be a different story.
I'm curious how populations will be after the free month is over for former players.
Indeed. I'm also curious how the populations will be. I left for a time, but find myself looking to get active into an MMO. I've played quite a few, but I still feel that Vanguard has potential.
I think the free month has ended, or is ending about now. I don't know as I had not "left" to return.
Yeah it was either the 20th or the 17th, but I've been to lazy to look it up. So far I haven't noticed much difference though, but it is the weekend.
Just looked it up, it's the 20th.
Potential has never been the issue. It always had potential.
I went back for a look-see during the freebie period, and to be honest it's likely that the things that annoyed you at launch are still there, and the things that you may have liked are still there.
What always stuns me about Vanguard is that it is this lovely created world -- I mean the cities, the structures, the lore lines -- it's all very well done in that regard -- but it is so goddamned empty. I know that was an intentional design decision, but it always strikes me as sad. Telon is a very barren place still, really, and I'm not referring to the player levels (which are better now after server merges). It's unfortunate because it's very clear that a lot of work and inspiration went into the game, but it's sad just to see it wasted by some , in reptrospect, atrocious design decisions.
stay away from the pvp server, its deader than britneys dreams of getting the "mother of the year" award.
Lol that made my day

Theres nothing wrong with the way vanguard is designed . the content is there you just have to be smart enough to find it , which apparently alot of people arent. But hey on the brite side theres plenty of games that are perfectly suited for people that need a big noen sign pointing the way for them

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

ss or it didnt happen.
What is this hidden content that requires SMRT players to find?
I've found plenty of dungeons and more 'kill X creature' quests than I care to ever see again, so I'm up for some of the hidden potential if you care to share.
