Oh, that's right -- because it proves that there IS a skill-based, sandboxy game out there that most people don't really want to play.

Another bad example actually.  it had a terrible launch which left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.  By time they got it running right, people were leaving in droves, so they had to make it free to play, which in turn drove away even more players like myself.

I'm not sure a skill based, sand box type game has ever launched cleanly and been fun to play.  EVE survived despite a crap launch, and its so unique it had limited market appeal.

They always say there is "one" in every crowd... well, here's that "one".  Sheesh, why bother even posting?

Board games and Card games on yahoo are just what you are looking for.  You get stars for your win ratio, its 100% skill based, there are no levels, and there are no classes even if you wanted to you could play bots and not have to worry about pvp incase you suck.  Its what you asked for in the first place.

    He has a point lol...

No....not even close to the statement "to sandbox"

Ryzom had a sh*t launch it didn't pull out of for 2 years and filed its first bankrupcy within the first year. Thats why it died. It was a sandbox game but without any of the tools needed to make it work / fun ever put in the game run by a company that struggled to stay solvent most of the time.

Ryzom was the complete victim of an unfinished, garbage launch, just like dozens of other MMO's.

Thats why Darkfall a sanbox game will be succesfull, it will be a very succesfull launch they bring it on market when its ready not rushed or unfinished.

why do people still cling to hope that this game will be released.. Its been in the same state of "progress" for 5 years. I think someone needs to setup up a 12 step program to bring these people back to the real world, or a pillow case full of bricks should do it... but hey! darkfall should be out anytime now!!!! beta soon!!! don't give up hope!

Im confused...and curious. Did Asherons Call go from subscription based to free to play and then back to subscription based again? Im wondering because i werent there at launch and it is subscription based now.

Even so, AC is probably best fanatsy skill based game you find right now...

I think a lot of people on this board focuses too much on whether a game follows the skill-based or level/class paradigm.  This is just one part of the formula that makes a quality game.  Concetrating on the structure of the game to the exclusion of everthing else is a mistake.

People should worry more about the quality of the overall game and worry less about whether an avatars strengths are quantified by XP points or skill points.

If so, please provide as much details about the game as you can (or where I can go read about it).  Thanks.
I would have to recommend DarkWind: War On Wheels (check my sig for more info).

Instead of having just one character, you manage a whole 'gang' of characters, each with it's own skills and attributes. You can tell each character what skill to train, so you can have a character that specializes in one thing, or is OK at multiple things. You can tailor your characters to what function you want to have in the game. For example, if one gang is made up of almost all mechanics, they can fix/build cars faster than anyone, and so they can do that as an in-game business. My gang is going to be operating a bus line between towns, transporting other gang's characters. So, I'm primarily going to be recruiting and training people that have Trucking and Mechanic skills. Once a character reaches (i think) 100 in a certain skill, they get to pick a 'specialism', which makes them even more unique. For example, a character with more than 100 in driving can choose from a skill that gives them a slight head start in races, being able to reload weapons and drive at the same time, or other skills. There is alot more to the skill system than what I explained here, but players will be happy to go through all of that.

PvP is almost non-existant, by choice. You'll find that the vast majority of players will play co-operatively. There are a few that dont, but they are pretty easy to avoid.

The game itself is turn-based, so there is alot of strategy involved, especially in combat. In that way, even someone with really good characters and gear can still lose combats if their strategy isnt up to par. But, players go through great lengths to teach good racing and combat strategies. Since everyone works together, when yo help someone else, you help yourself as well.

Hope that helped. If you've got any questions about this game, feel free to PM me, or ask in-game.

Ryzom is _not_ a skill-based game. It's a class based game that allows you to multiclass. For the first 50 "levels", you're stuck in a very narrow field (melee, mage, healer, crafter, harvester) or some combination of those and it's not until later that the skills branch out. In general the most important part of a character is their highest skill. There are no auxillery skills, merely skills which work in entirely different situations.

Compare to Eve online where you have one skill that affects your shields, one that affects your lasers, another that affects your engines, and so on. Only, the way advancement is disconnected from playing makes it feel like grinding asteroids is all there is to do.

Actually, I must have been confused the day I wrote my post, Anarchy online was the game I was thinking about.  Asheron's call was and is still a pay for play game as you correctly stated.

While Asheron's call is skill based, they screwed it up by adding levels too :)

You have got to be kidding me.  First off, Second Life is not a game.  Linden Labs will tell you as much, rather vehemently.

Furthermore, it is common knowledge that their so-called "subscription numbers" are padded through the roof by people with multiple (free) accounts, and by people who started an account for a day and never returned.  When accounts are free and never expire, I guess you can get away with claiming big numbers?

If you actually take Second Life seriously and believe the hype coming out of Linden Labs, you are ridiculous.
