Since the announcement by Blizzard that WoW will receive another raise in the level cap I've been looking for a game to play without much luck.  Although I have enjoyed Planetside for a little while again (two free weeks if you're an old player) I haven't found something to really hold my interest.   Then last week I tried out Minions of Mirth and the game has actually turned out to be quite good.

First thing's first, the graphics are not very pretty.  They're about the same level as EQ1.

Second the game is not very easy to get started.  It is confusing and challenging and the hardest part of the game so far for me was getting from level 1 to level 2.

Now the good news:  There are 12 races and 16 classes.  These selections are spread out over the diametrically opposed Fellowship of Light and Minions of Darkness.  About as creative in the naming as any of these games I guess...

With this large number of classes you also have the ability to multiclass up to three.  With this triclass system you are allowed to use any of the skills or spells at any time and can pretty much customize your character to any extent that you want.  The possibilities really are pretty limitless.

Other highlights:

There is a very large pet system that plays a large part in the strategy for those classes that are able to use pets.

You can flag or unflag yourself for pvp at any point.  From most accounts it is better to do this at higher levels.

Guilds

Large 3D world that is completely original.

You can play as a monster!  Be a dragon or werewolf and slay life.

A solid community.  Because of the lack of graphics and difficulty of the game all the douchebags are kept out resulting in a helpful and intelligent community.

The best part(s):

1.)  This game is free to play until you are 15/5, or level 15 in your main class and level 5 in your secondary class.  At that point the game costs $30... forever.  That's right there are NO MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION FEES.

2.)  An expansion is in the works and from reading the forums the developers really take the input of the community seriously and try to cater to what they want.  No idea on the fee for this when it happens but I'm sure it won't be too bad.

3.)  It is an open source game.  You're allowed to run your own servers and the developers want the help of the community in the game.  Right now the look of the armor is not very diverse but ARTISTS ARE WANTED.  Want to design armor that everyone can oooh and ahh at?  Come make it!

If you're looking for something good and don't mind learning something new and not having the game handed to you then come try out Minions of Mirth.  I need some friends to play with since all mine are still wasting life in Azeroth.  In game I'm Stellar, give a shout.
