    This is very very nice.

I am looking for a sci-fi MMORPG to play when I break from WOW. I tried AO couple of weeks back but I really cannot get pass the really dated graphics.

This will definitely make it back on my list to play. I hope the ETA is soon.

How's the UI and character movement?  I came back to AO a while back after playing WoW a long time, and was shocked how clunky AO's movement interface was.  Perhaps Funcom's fixed that the past few years?

  • burmeseburmese Member Posts: 546

UI will stay the same, player model movements also.  The player textures will probably be a lot better.  The UI is, imo, one of the best out there and almost no complaints about it in the forums so don't expect FC to touch it.  Player models could be better and ppl would like but that is very time and money intensive to do.

They've tweaked it a little bit here and there so it's not nearly as "clunky" as it used to be. Still, when I used to play WoW and come back to playing AO it would take me a while to get used to AO's interface and movement again. Of course the UI is customizable with 3rd party addons, so you can pretty much make it as streamlined as you want. IMO once you get used to it it is really not a bad interface, and I've definitely seen much worse.

Apart from a few things posted(new heads...), not much. Apparently they sacked the old code, and moved to ogre(or ocre...) it's going on, but will take a while still...

    Okay few snipets:

    Friday with Means - February 6th, 2009

Q - "How is the new Graphics Engine progressing? I know you hesitate to give an exact release date for it for obvious reasons, but do you expect it may be ready by Fall 2009 or End of 2009 perhaps?"

A - I really can't give a specific date. What I can say is that the engine is close to being "feature complete" meaning everything is in place. That being said there are a great number of effects that need replacing and a great deal of performance tuning that remains to be done. I think we can all agree that the new engine should be smooth, stable, fast and beautiful. Until those criteria are met we are going to keep working on it. Don't worry, when we get even close I imagine the video previews will be coming out of our ears.

    Friday with Means - March 13th, 2009

    The Engine:

I haven't spoken about the engine for awhile...as it is difficult to make code optimization interesting...I only listen in those meeting because I have to. The coders are working hard at optimizing the new engine..as currently it is an "all features on full" affair that provides all features...but poor framerate. Optimizations that were missing from "old" AO are being looked into..like mesh instancing (load that tree once with a single call...and populate it out at no real framerate loss) was one aspect of the coder work this week. They were very excited to have 500 Turbine mesh's on the screen at once without significant issues. I'm going to assume this is a good thing...I sometimes don't always get those "coder moments". At any rate, an effect system is now working and we can begin to start producing some new effects, everything is being rendered...now optimization and the grunt work of producing a great number of effects can begin. Both these are going to take time...but we'll keep at it.

There will of course be some graphical updates with the new engine...the full extent of which isn't fully decided. New trees to freshen up the outdoor environments are definitely coming. Character bodies are going to be "smoothed" and better optimized for animation to lose some of the nasty poly issues. One test in progress at the moment is new character heads...AO has a huge number of these...so we are currently working on a "work in progress" opifex female head as a test case for possible production of new heads. I imagine it is unlikely we will simply replace all the heads in game as all of us have some attatchment to these...but more likely offer a choice to move to a "new" head if we want...and remove the old ones from character creation so all new characters will get new heads. Like I said...this is in the early phases...and not final yet...but exciting so I wanted to share an image with you for this week.

    Have a great weekend!

Friday with Means - March 20th, 2009 Some more stuff and new heads.

The problem is, they've been talking about the new engine for a long time, but so far it's all been just talk.  I won't believe it until I've actually got it running on my system.  The other issue is that apparently, the engine is just eye-candy, it's not going to fix a lot of the edge-detection problems, you'll still have rhinos hanging out of walls in Newland Desert, etc.  If you're going to redo your engine, why not fix the issues with the old one?

Yes, it looks spiffy, but I don't mind what they've got now, I'm in it for the gameplay, not the eye-candy.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

Yeah I remember when the upgrade was slated for summer of 2008 lol..........Supposedly it was almost ready then too......... While AO is a great game for those of us that have played it a few years it does not appeal to most of the modern gamers (ie the WoW generation).........WHile many of us enjoy the depth that AO offers, most of the WoW generation looks for the eye candy and animations for their enjoyment........While upgarding the visuals in the world is a nice start they will ahve to overhaul the avatars to lure in very many new players........The graphics update the way it is now might interest some of those that have left AO in the past but probably not entice many to cancel their WoW accounts and come play.

I know for certain that if and when the graphics update comes along I will be back on AO like a shot.  I've tried the free play 3 times, each time I've enjoyed the setting and the gameplay, and have really wanted to love the game, but I can't get past the dated graphics.

Gameplay is on the whole more important than graphics, but for me there's a certain graphics "threshold" and if games fall below it I just can't play them - I suspect I'm not alone in this trait.  That threshold is set by what's generally available in modern graphics, what you get used to - and if you've played LOTRO or AoC, it's simply not possible to enjoy the visual aspect of AO anymore, at least not for me.

Another example, I was a CoX fan for 3 years, loved the game to bits.  But now, it's starting to look long in the tooth, and the graphics that were capable of immersing me a couple of years ago just call attention to themselves now, in looking odd, because they don't look like what I'm now accustomed to from games.

I agree. i wtill be back as soon as the new engine is in place. Any news on what is happening with the the gfx engine? It seems as if there are posters here at the forum who know what is going on, maybe you can share this with the rest of us?

The original "new" engine ( using OGRE ) which was used in the demo was scrapped a few months ago after nearly two years of work. They are now going to use the updated Dreamworld engine ( the old Dreamworld engine is what AO currently uses ) from Age of Conan.

Just the engine is being replaced along with particle effects for nanos and such. They are upgrading the graphics engine, not the graphics textures.

This means the textures stay the same but now the game will have advanced lighting and shadow effects, bumpmapping, dx9 ( with dx10 stated to be a possibility in the future ).

To understand this, if you look at the demo of the "new" engine when they were using OGRE, it was the same thing.

No new textures, just a better engine ( the "new" water you see is not a new texture, it is just the same old AO water rendered in dx9 with better lighting/shadows for example ).

Supposedly, the new engine will be ready around November of this year. However, most realistic people know it will likely not be before the middle of next year, if not later.

Thanks for this info. This is really sad. I was hoping for new textures & models. I really love AO - it is one of the best games I ever played -- but the graphics and models are just to dated to live with.

Just moving the burden from the CPU to the GPU will mean a LOT for AO.

I have a bleeding edge machine

    I7 940

    6gb of ddr3

    2x260 nvidia cards.

And still I can get AO to stutter in athens.

    That is just not acceptable.

The graphics may not be all that, but if it ran extremely smothely on cutting edge machines I would be ok, but it does not.

Still must say, as for innovation, game concept and whatnot, this is still the best MMO we could ever hope for.

Reasonably sand box, the equipment choices is crazy, wich at my last count was something like 58 meaningful slots to put gear into.

From 1-220 there will be NO level were you do not upgrade at least one item, and the power increase from each is significant.

AO does nothing if not make you feel extremely powerful.

One thousand LVL 20 players could never hope to defeat one lvl 220.

And before the overequip thing, ( the first time I left AO ), you could go WAY out of your league if you had the resources, and time.

Because lets face it, it took way more time for me to cram into gear 5 levels above me then it took to get them 5 lvls, but it was fun, and irony is that there can be no "fun" in funcom.. ;)

Bitterness aside, I can NOT understand why this is not the benchmark for all MMO's on the market.

You had progress ALWAYS, the carrot was HUGE by any means and it just kept you going, new implant, new armor slot, new utility gear, it was crazy, and rewarding.

    Like Diablo 2 on drugs.

Housing, crafting, alltough all limited to a degree I had a LOT of fun in not only my own appartment, and I had several, but I got stuck in a lot of RP events as well were we crashed each others houses.

As for crafting, the top enigeneers made money like nothing else, only sad thing about it was that they had to sacrifice figthing XP to gain crafting lvl.

But still, you could NEVER be number one without the crafting people, be it Arul saba bracelets or whatever.

If I am not mistaken, ( I never did get AI gear, at leat not crafted for me ), you needed some crazy crafters for that as well?

Ouch, sorry for the rant, but this was my first MMO, alongside AC, and it bloody rocked my world back in the days.

Todays MMO's is but a pale shadow content wise, not so visually of course, but none the less.

Its like choosing between that nobel laureate and the model on whom to marry, sure the model is nice, initially, but what then?

Not that I would get either choice, but you understand what i mean? ;)

Brace for mass disappointment. Though to be honest, I would rather have had a massive UI update. The one it's been using this whole time is absolutely horrid and is a bigger deterrant to me returning than the graphics.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Well, looks like some textures are being redone. Enjoy.

The last pic is the new Nanomage female head texture in the old ( as in the current ) engine. Apparently, the eyes not only glow, but pulsate as well.

Body pics are expected in the next few weeks.

Where do theses pics come from? Have you got any more info on the GFX ?

No ETA yet. It's been in development for over a year and no word yet. To be fair they have admitted that they were premature when they first announced that they were working on it.

Correction: they scrapped the first new engine attempt using the OGRE engine after almost 2 years of work. The current attempt using the AoC version of the Dreamworld engine is only about 3 months in.

Zorvan- Do you think in late 2010 or maybe early 2011 we can expect a beta version to be released?
