Not a bad gamer overall...But it could definitely use work. The graphics are excellent. The gameplay could use a bit of work... The items as well. The game is not bad and has potential... How ever I wouldn't exactly consider it great. Just me throwin my opinion down...

I remember 2 handers beeing gimped compared to dual weilding, it that still the case?

Captains using 2h weapons do excellent damage IMO.
The game is evolving, being tweaked, updated and additional content on almost a monthly basis.
But then again, it is not for everyone. Not sure why people that don't like the game feel such a need to come to the LotRO forums and complain about something they aren't playing and as such, aren't up to date with current game status.

Overall i think i have played lotro like 200 some hours now , and i think it is very good ,I used to play COH over dialup ...LOL.... Long ways back .But i quit just before i got decent internet and started to play eve , but i cant stand space genre's so i left that (other than my personal reason for quiting eve was great.) But all in all lotro is a very nice game, all depends on taste i think it has lots of pssibilities for future updates but all said a well rounded game.
I meant for champions or whatever thay're called. Melee dps/aoe.

Think thats kinda of an unfair statement Furrbawl,
He didnt start a post flaming LOTRO. He didnt say it was a horrible game. He didnt say it was a bad game. As a matter of fact, he said it was NOT a bad game overall, but could use work. Which it could. I think most Tolkien fans would admit that as well. He just didnt say it wasnt great. Honestly, the only people Ive read that thing LOTRO is a great game is.. mainly Tolkien fans.
Thats not a bad thing, its a theme game. I like Star Trek so if I played a ST game, I know I would probably think its great, being slightly blinded by love of the lore. But as a gamer, I should be honest enough to admit when things arent so spanky.
The numbers of the game appear solid for subs, LOTRO has a solid fan base, and they ARE improving content slowly enough not to ruin it for lore fans. But its not everyone's cup of tea. I loved the game (have a 50 mins/50 lrm) but I dont love it anymore. Im not a true Tolkien fan, so I feel the game lacks a certain "punch" to keep me subscribed for another year. But I won't flame the game, it doenst deserve that.
But it DOES deserve accurate "opinions" from people who have played it, regardless of where loyalties lie, not just fans. I honestly dont know where he would post such a topic except in this forum, unless you think the WoW forums would be more appropriate?
Anyone thinking of trying the game out should be able to check in here and get more than the standard "GREAT GAME! TRY IT OUT, YOULL LOVE IT!"
He posted 1/20/08 and said he quit. So he could have quit 5 mins before that. Unless they put a update in the time since you replied, I think its fair to say, he knows what has currently been updated.

I agree with your assessment. The OP's "review" while a bit on the short and vague side is none-the-less fine, as he gave the game a try and it's his opinion of what he finds fun. We aren't all going to like the same games. That's a good thing!
With turbine as the main bridge i wouldnt expect this to stay up and running for too long without a massive player hit.
WIth the games asheron's call and AC2 that not only made this company but shows that they dont even care about the dedicated players by siphoning out the money from those games into other projects just so they can rinse and repeat (DnDo).
They have a talented group but they arent caring much for hte players. Nothing against the game, just the creators. TURBINE GET A CLUE AND RESPECT THE CLIENTS.
True Dragon,
His opinion was pretty short, hehe. My text wall was bigger than his post, lol. (Im a windbag generally, since Im in between MMOs sorta).
I also don't mean to imply that Furrbawl was flaming him either. I dont think he was, but I thought he was responding directly to him; although he could have been talking about some other people who do that.
Tolkien fans are generally, as I have found comparing MMOs, some of the most intelligent, knowledgeable and thoughtful gamers around. (again, am NOT a Tolkien fan). I enjoyed my time in my kin, but alas, the game isnt for me.
This game should last many years, just based on the people who subscribe to this game. Enough fans to keep it running, I think. Very good folk.
You should all be proud you finally found a home. Grats^^

Been there done that.
Quited the game myself. I also found Itemisation horrible , combat could use lot of work....etc
So I went looking. Played Tabula Rasa , POTBS ,EQ2, EVE ... even restarted WOW.
Nothing really worked.
Should i restart LOTRO i said to myself ?
I did , and i am very glad i did.
It may not be a great game we all wished for (we will have to wait for bioware game). But it is the best we have now. (pve)
Well....you will see
I've played LOTRO since open Beta and really like the graphics, story and it has a great community. I admit that the combat system could use a little work but that may come later (or at least in gradual bits). Anyway, I just got a little burned out on fantasy games and decided to give EVE a go. Nice game with great story but the tutorial was not that great and a bit boring and the skills training involves way too much micro-managemnet for my liking. Some people like a high degree of that, I just don't. Not saying it's a bad game or anything....it just wasn't for me. So...back to LOTRO until Stargate Worlds comes along. (Since Star Trek Online seems to be stuck in the transporter buffer).
I started playing this game at release, my first thoughts on it were that it lacked immersion, something about the game just made me not want to keep me playing hour after hour. I still played casually though I gave the game a hell of a shot and played my minstrel till mid 40s or so. The i just stopped playing, maybe the game just wasnt for me I dont know but i just didnt feel at all attached to my character or any part of the storyline at all.
The game overall isnt a bad game, more quests then there has to be to keep you busy as i remember. The immersion part was the only real problem for me.
If you want to play 2H, then play Captain.
Immersion loading. Please stand by. What Turbine did really well with Lotro was they created a very 'pretty' STABLE game. They really laid the foundation upon which they can now build... and build they do.
Check out the coming updates: http://www.lotro.com/article/487 That ought to help some with immersion... I know it'll help me.
Eventually though I hope the way characters interact with the world is worked upon also. I want to be able to climb rock faces [or at least some], ladders [Which Turbine did in DDO] work levers, solve maze puzzles and avoid traps that sort of stuff... sit at a table and drink an ale or have some minigames at taverns for players to play around a table. All 'roleplayer junk' hehe.
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
I was in the same boat as Maseloc, but the character progression was the real killer for me. There was nothing in the character class progression that would allow me to differentiate myself from others of the same class. Sure, there were talents (achievements) that could be accumulated through endless grinding, but the difference these talents made on my character were not very significant. And besides, why should I have to grind 500 goblins to get a mere 2% increase to *fill-in-the-blank*? I like to customize my character's abilities, even if it's not the best build in the MMORPG, it will reflect my play style. LotRO just didn't allow me to do this, which made me not care about the character I was playing. In the end, I was generic Guardian #2,345.
I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.
The whole point of LotRO is Roleplay.
It isn't just what Item/Traits/Skills you have.
It is how YOU create the character !
If you PL to 50, don't Craft, ignore Deeds, blindly slot Traits, the game is not going to satisfy. This is not EQ1, or EQ2, or V:SoH, or any of those. If you don't RP, then you don't "get it".

I'm not trying to offend you or your ways but I have never roleplayed in a game, not because i think its lame but it just isnt for me. I play games because it is a game and fun. I shouldnt have to pretend I am a dwarf guardian to have fun. I agree with guardian #2,345.
No offence mate , but imo Turbine is the only company i have seen that respect the player base, Soe and Blizzard have no respect and don't listen Turbine has listen to almost everyting thats been posted on the forums , now i dont know about there past , but i do belief in what i see and experiance now.
Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.

Gotta agree with Ackbar over there. Turbine has been great with the community - Even in Beta they were great and they listen and USUALLY do it without becoming a pushover and allowing crazy changes to happen. Mostly good stuff... SOMETIMES yeah, some whiners get their way but not as often as the intelligent suggestions.

@ Shoal
Wow, you are indeed magical. You got all that about me from my opinion post? You are a game GOD.
Smart-alec comments aside, the bottom line is that LotRO is a GAME. I shouldn't have to dress up in a LARP costume and frolic amongst the commonwealth in-game spouting "thees" and "thous" to "get it." Numbers crunching and customizing one's character according to PLAY style is part of an MMORPG game play experience, otherwise why have them? If all you want to do is "roleplay," then play Second Life, have your toon dress up in whatever you want to roleplay and prance around spouting in-character jargon - rules and numbers be damned!
Sometimes it takes more to enjoy an MMORPG than just imagining I'm a (insert class here) and speaking in what I perceive as the common tongue for my race. Sometimes the rules and game play mechanics will determine how fun a particular game is, especially if I can customize the experience through character development choices. LotRO just doesn't provide those character abilities and stats customization choices that I like (like EQ2 or even WoW). Different strokes and all, but I'm willing to bet there are more people out there more interested in how a game plays than whether or not Old English is the practiced in-game tongue.
I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.
I played in beta and not live. For me ..the game was good looking....but just not exciting to play.Safe...booring are descriptors that come to mind.Crafting was overly expensive and the ingame mail system was far too expensive to be able to send things to your other characters.
In the RW...you really get one shot and enough water has not passed under the bridge to warrant another look for myself.
The expenses are big for starting character.
I remember how i had to beg for coins, so i could train skills i gained with lvl up ! Hehe.
But mail! At higher levels its peanuts...few silver for mail?
I just payed 200 silver , for armor repairs after i was defeated.
I never had any problem making money in the game, on the contrary, I found it very easy, even at low levels and can remember that I had my first piece of gold at level 19. What helps of course is when you have a profession that can gather materials because materials sell well on the Auction House.
But the main advise would probably be not to buy anything before, say, level 15 but just use the quest rewards and other loot. During these lower levels you level that fast that you will replace any bought item within a few hours of gameplay anyway.
Second advise would be not to die, or at least not that often, that alone saves a good deal on the repair bill.
And, thirdly, do not just repair all items. During these lower levels you usually get new items from quests that fast that there's hardly ever a need to repair all the old ones. Remember, the NPC merchant pays the same for an item, no matter whether it's fully repaired or almost completely broken.
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
Last I checked, the NPC merchance did not pay the same for damaged items. In fact, it saved you money by repairing the whole lot and then vendoring them. Unless that was recently changed...
I think one should be careful about generalizing the point of the game, whether it be for roleplay or otherwise. In fact, Turbine has stated as one of their goals for LOTRO is to reach as big of an audience as possible, so narrowing that audience to one playstyle or another wouldn't accomplish that, and if anybody knows what the point of the game is, it's the developers. In this case, I'd say the point of the game is to have fun, and whatever playstyle fits that for you is what you should do.
Now, addressing some of the OPs concerns, it is my personal experience through the last three updates (and from reading the fourth) that Turbine is greatly improving this game, adding features, etc. So, I think that we will eventually see further refinement in the areas of concern, though you were vague in specific problems in those areas, so I can't really say if your particular issues will see updates. Not that I'd know for sure, but I can make an educated guess based on what I've read and seen in the game.
As to the issue about money making, I can say that for myself I've not had a problem making enough money to repair, skill up, etc. Now, I am not a profession that makes money on my crafted goods. I'm a yeoman, so cook, farmer, and tailor, of which tailor I haven't leveled at all. Food does not sell for a profit, much less breaking even (probably because even a small profit margin is a cost greater than what the players value the food buffs). And farming equally has no profit because there are so few people level cooks (probably for the reasons above). Farming for me has its value in supply my own cooking craft, but not much outside of that - kin on occasion. Still, even with a money sink for a crafting prof, I've managed to save up enough coin to repair myself after battles - long ones included, purchase a horse at 35, and a delux house on the first day they were available. I did this all by simply selling all the trash loot I could get my hands on. I looted everything, and when I couldn't get back to town before my bags were full, I replaced loot with greater value loot I found on the way back.
