On the fence...

I missed the chance to play in the open beta due to work responsibilites, but I have been following POTBS for a bit.

There seem to be a lot of haters on these forums (not suprising) just wondering if the game is for me.  Been playing MMOs for over 6 years...how different in POTBS from the rest of MMO genre?

How is the community (it may be to early to answer this)?  How is the crafting and combat?

As I've said...done a lot of reading and research, not looking for specifics...not looking for game mechanics theories and such...just looking for the  opinions of fellow gamers.

If you like to develop an a character, enjoy exploration, crafting and PVP...is this a game to check out?

The unique aspect to it is the naval combat.  It's quite nicely done, and it's the main focus of the game.

The community is okay so far, it is early to answer that question however.  Once the PvP starts to roll, then we'll see how the community holds up.

Crafting is simple, but the economic system itself is very involved.  It basically revolves around ships and ship upgrades, and the raw materials are scattered around the map, so players need to collaborate with each other to gather and process the right materials to build the bigger ships.
The ship combat is nicely done.  The avatar combat (which plays a small role in the game) is lackluster.

Exploration is not really a focus -- you can explore the Caribbean, but many port cities look very similar.  Crafting/economy is a major focus of the game as is RvR PvP.  It's probably worth taking a look.

Well you really can't win with a game like PotBS...either you hate the game and you're out fifty bucks or you like the game but get screwed when SOE buys it outright and NGEs it.

Either way you're better off avoiding it altogether.

It's a fun game if you're into crafting, economy and conquest.  It's got a good sense of humor in the storylines and its fun.  It's UI is a bit of a mess and the avatar combat is bad, it basically needs another level of polish, but if you can forgive these sins its worth a go.  It's a very collaborative game, so I'd also suggest finding a Society to join, no one player can make everything so teamwork is needed.
