I am looking forward to the upgrade. This game has a ton of content. Has there been any newer "news" on this.

Are/were there any gameplay changes to accompany the gfx upgrade or is Anarchy Online still the same old huge grindfest with some pvp slapped on ?
  • TrashcantoyTrashcantoy Member Posts: 827

    pvp slapped on? LOL

altho i hate advys/keepers and esp soldiers in pvp (i played a 220 enf..) AO has a great pvp system, go buy the Lost Eden expansion and play some battlestation, its great

next to that u have towers wars for all sorts of lvls, there are some insane twinks out there who spend months just to get some badass implants in, i made a froob lvl 25 styg trader who could get the styg 100% but i just plain sucked against the REAL twinks out there, including other froobs

i quit playing after 3 years of which about 2 years paid (ign was Kevinsama)

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

i like the game, left for SWG..... but do ya think the mobs will walk and not slide across the ground and if you miss with your ranged wep does the projectile come out at a 90 deg. angle to the bbl??

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

Less Grind and more varied PvP than any other MMO I know.  Every MMO has a lot of grind, it's just a matter of how it is 'disguised' and AO is better than most at that.  No other game allows such a variety of PvP scenarios, from duels to battle stations to Towers (the 'hardcore' PvP).

Alot of that will be fixed with the new engine implementation, as the current code is being cleaned up as part of the engine development.

You have to remember that from the time AO was first developed until now, it has gone through multiple dev teams. Alot of the older code was not marked properly and each new bit of code ( such as code brought in with expansions, updates, etc. ) was more or less haphazardly spliced in as best as possible.

One of the reasons many of the old bugs ( including ones regarding animations, such as you mentioned ) are still there is because the current devs have no idea where the problem is in the old code. It's why they have trouble with patches breaking some things unintentionally and even in some cases fixing other things unexplicably.

I've always felt that should be made into an intended feature.

Dunno about that, I remember grinding hours upon hours on mutant camps in Lush Fields or Pleasant Meadows. Later of course the infamous Hecklers..Pretty grindy if you ask me.

Dunno about that, I remember grinding hours upon hours on mutant camps in Lush Fields or Pleasant Meadows. Later of course the infamous Hecklers..Pretty grindy if you ask me. Because that's what people consider the "routine" to leveling in AO ( and every other game it sadly seems ). Instead of enjoying the game, going out in the wilds of Rubi-ka and hunting, sightseeing, going to the places where most players don't because they think they can only level where everyone else thinks is appropriate. And as far as hecklers, might surprise ya to know there are some people who prefer to level on Rubi-ka and not ride the same xp gravy train as the heckn00bs. In fact, it feels like I'm leveling faster exploring and just having fun than it does if I'm just following a preset leveling scheme. Perhaps that where the "grind" comes in for most people. Throw away the gawdamned plan and just enjoy the game.

Just like the people who think they have to have the "perfect build" that 95% of the population uses, instead of choosing something their own style.

AO does have more variety in just about every area of the game than any other game out there.

If you go to a restaurant which has every known dish to man available, but only choose what everyone else thinks is acceptable, don't you eventually get tired of going, as there is nothing new? Same thing with a game. If there is a wide open gameworld, but you only go to certain areas all the time because they're the popular or recommended spots, eventually you get tired of it because you're only seeing the "same old grind" every time.

I will most definitely be giving AO a proper try when the new engine is released. I tried it last year but I just couldn't handle the graphics. I'm no graphire wh**e, but I just couldn't handle it. Maybe it was because I am so used to Guild Wars' beautiful graphics that it felt like a serious blow in that department. I'm in need of a good sci-fi MMO and this could just do the trick.

That's not how software version numbering works. There could be a patch 17.99999999999999999.0 before 18.0 comes along. The graphics engine upgrade is planed for the later part of the year, how many version patches we get before then is impossible to say.

Also remember this is an engine update, not a graphics in general update. Originally they said all it would do was take advantage of current video cards to take the work load off the CPU and that visual improvements would come after that over time. Now it looks like at least some things will look better right away but still, don't expect night and day changes. It will look better but the main gain at the start will be that it should play more smoothly. Considering how many textures and meshes there are in the game it will be some time before they can give everything to most things a facelift.

From the game directors' new letter: mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/171549

"The render engine upgrade is coming along nicely and we are still hoping that we will be able to launch it later this year. We are soon starting full testing on the engine itself, and will them move on to the upgrading of the visual effects that have to be reworked or converted for the new engine (Nano-casting effects and such like). This is a lengthy part of the process but the progress so far has been excellent and we will be sure to keep you all up to date as we progress.

In terms of game updates the current plan is that the new engine upgrade will be the 18.0 update, which will also hopefully have some great new booster content at the same time. We are working towards completing a playfield booster for high level players to launch around the same time as the engine. That might change however as we might not want one to hold back the other and vice versa so we really won’t be sure until we get the engine into full beta testing. That then brings us to what will come before the new engine in the form of the 17.9 update!"

So yeah, there will probably be a 17.9.1 and so on before 18.0.

Far as the visuals go, there keeping things really close to the vest. Such as saying they were only doing the engine for the performance enhancement, and then hitting us with the new graphic visuals in the videos and screenshots.

Like I've always figured from the beginning, Sil is doing it the smart way. Working on the visuals, art, etc., but not coming out and saying so from the beginning. This way, it's a nice surprise for the players, but also doesn't cause problems and disappointment if they hit a snag and have to delay the artwork upgrading. If noone expects big visual improvements, noone is disappointed if it takes a little longer to get 'em.
