i need a HARD mmo.
Ive been playing EQ recently and im starting to get bored of it. I was an avid EQ1 gamer, I was addicted to EQ because everything was just so bloody hard. So, im looking for the hardest MMO you guys can throw at me. *i wish vanguard succeeded* =(

Play your MMO's upside down and don't use buffs.
When you say 'hard' you mean tedious.
Its very HARD to play wow with all those kiddies and the colorful graphics
to protect me.
Can't speak to the F2P market, but in P2P consider FFXI or Lineage 2. Both have considerable grind to them and should keep you occupied for a long time to come.

Yeah, L2 has the most difficult grind out there plus its economy will bring you to your knees and probably send you running back to whatever game you are playing now. Add the fact in that anyone can kill you at just about any time outside of a town, you will get no where without socializing, a tough death penalty and I think you have what you are looking for. God I miss L2 sometimes! New.....expansion....must resist.....
As long as you dont need ghey fairies waving silly wands you can ply the best MMO ever made, and certainly the hardest

If you want your MMO to be a living hell while playing do this.
Download and Install Lineage 1
Level up to around 48
Start making yourself a reputation as a not so nice guy, cheat and scam.
You will basically have half the server attempting to kill you everytime they see you (Open FFA PvP)
FFXI is your game, especially if you are partial to the EQ1 style of gameplay. FFXI is probably the best pure PvE MMO on the market. It is very challenging, but I feel it also has the best community.

I recommend Final Fantasy XI. Practically mandatory grouping, high exp grind (through classes and subclasses that can be done with alternate combinations just by going to your house), extreme amounts of content in especially the end game (it will take a LONG time to get there though, but its mutually agreed its hella fun to get there). Ah....Lineage 1, it was my first MMORPG, and I have (some) fond memories. But I played on the Carebear server so I could be as much a jerk as I wanted to. (I wasn't)

D&D Online I found that the Dungeons were hard and complicated, more so than anyother game, every one had a diff. theme to it, some you better bring a rogue as the traps could be too hard with out one, some you need a caster for the end boss, i was a Cleric and one dungeon my group had to keep me out of site bacause everything went after the healer.
There are Vampire's, fire dungeons,sewers you name it. Skills are the same as all other games however you have to have weapon sets ready to be changed in mid fight as some times you need a blunt weapon or you split blobs in half. best game i ever had, EVERYONE uses vioce chat, and it seems to work great on everyones computer. And one of the best parts is real time combat you have to use your mouse for every swing, The city of Stormreach is very big you don't just sit in taverns like you would think, lots to do. Its a very deep game.
FX11 was just too old for me and it does not play too good for PC's made more for x-box.
There is EVE and then there are all the other MMOs that wish they were as good.

I have to second or third the suggestion for EVE. EVE can be as difficult or as simple as you would like for it to be. It is up to you on how detailed you want to be in your endevours or how many people you want to piss off along the way.
Though many people, correctly, make alot about how much griefing there is in EVE, you will also find the highest level of cooperation among its members.
Though one might be able to run a POS (Player Owned Station) alone, it is no fun, and building an Outpost alone is not possible.
In short, EVE is Cooperation against (or to commit) Grief.
