The bilateral system as well as the no same side PvP serves a purpose. I guess it is all a matter of taste but neither is truly better. The bilateral system allows for two sides to fight and help even out the fight instead of the common happening of 1 side that is nothing and 2 sides that are very strong. Also The racial war part makes sense to me but doesnt really cut it. The races will tend to also correspond to a certain type of skill you might want so if one race is found to be REALLY REALLY good then well one side gets alot of people.
The PvP is a large part of the game and what i fin d as the selling points are the world size how it contains only 1 server and the fun extra things like sheildboarding. Plus the creativity of the mounts. Also from what we can tell D&L is more along the lines of a SKill/Level based system where you cannot choose your class at the start but you gain skill sets and depnding upon the most used you acquire a class. D&L was designed more around the system of strategic PvP meaning that formation and placement of troops can be the diffrence between a loss or win. PLus who cant love a lego type of castel right? SInce seige weapons can destroy parts of the wall ect. parachuting and paragliding actually have been some strategys discussed.
Ther is also a political system to speak of within Drak and light this includes the prosghression of a ruler since you must go a process of election to eventually become ArchDUke of a kingdom. From there there is alot of economy work going on. Besides that crafting is extremely dynamic and if you want to get lets say the ultimate sword you would have to find the right coniditons this includes. weather, climate, alignment of planets. eclipse, your factions moon in the sky and quality of the overall ingredients. P{lus to create this item it doesnt only involve the work of just one Grandmaster crafter it includes the work of every level of crafter. It could be done by the Grandmaster but it would be pointless for him since he wont gain money nor experience from creating the parts of the sword. We also have one skill I justr could die for. Exploration. If you play an explorer which is any class mind you since exploring is a skill. You become a map drwawer which you can sell. you can also locate mines and resources. Can open portals behind enemy lines and learn to really survive in the wild. You also gain the ability to move relaticely fast over rough terrain and best of all sevral classes require no fight to gain in experience. This includes being anb explorere since an explorer normally is set for only very light skirmishes.
I personally prefer teams-based PVP. I first came to love it on Tallon Zek when that EQ server first opened and enjoyed it for a long time in DAOC until other aspects of the game got to me. What impresses me about D&L is the expansiveness of it. Not just the 15,000 square miles to work with, but the breadth of experience you can have with your character(s). There is the overall war, the smaller fights, the fortress siezing, empire building, crafting that matters and is original, political involvement which has a real and direct effect on all other aspects of the game, and explorers are important in gameplay - not just for selling maps, but as the tamers of mounts and some pets. Each aspect above has a real depth of play to it with real value to the gameworld and isn't just a tagged on "feature".
When I really got hooked was while watching the 2004 E3 video for the game and a dragon pet threw a combatant. The second big catch for me was looking at screenshots of a good sized PC battle and they claimed that there was no server lag involved in the fight. With the possiblility of thousands of people being involved in a single battle, we'll see how the server lag issue works out. So far with their technology, I'm optimistic.
I really don't think that either game is better than the other. I think that the two games completely fill out the area of MMORPG PvP.
If you are a person who enjoys PvP that is going to be more strategic and open field type of battles, you will probably lean more towards DnL. And if you are like me, I prefer the bilateral approach, because IMO when you have a game where guilds can war any other guild, it eventually turns into a free for all until 2-3 major alliances form. DnL forces those sides. If you are Dark you fight Light and visa versa. This allows players and guilds to focus more on PvP itself, and the strategies, instead of spending half of the time saying, "are we at war with this guild? weren't we allies last week?" Player politics is too much of a headache for me so I will go the DnL route. But that is just my preference.
Players who enjoy getting all invovled in the player politics will be more inclined towards DF. Also the people who don't like the "waiting for the perfect moment" of that big strategies take, and like to just jump in and mix it up will go to DF. Obviously there will be plenty of strategy in DF, but not to the extent of DnL, which is fine, because it is the game for the people on the opposite side of the spectrum, just not for me personally.
A good way to think of it is DnL and DF are brothers. They are both geniuses, one of them is a perfect Spiker, one of them is a perfect Digger. Together they make the perfect 2 person volleyball team.
So that is my little speal on the two games, I will personally go DnL, but I doubt DF would be any less of a good game, just different.
