My brain hurts, little help maybe?

Greetings PotBS community,

I've been a fan of this game since the public announcement of it's development and i've watched the progress for a LONG time now ... since the game has been released i'm a little on the fence, like many others.  I've read countless forum topics and I've watched so many game play videos that my eyes have just about jumped out of their sockets ... not to mention ALL the screen shot galleries of beautiful ships and ports.  I did have an opportunity to Beta the  game during the stress test, however, I am active military so my time spent actually testing and exploring was lacking.  I LOVE the idea of RvR where a Nationality really matters to the overall game, after all, Diplomacy, Axis and Allies, and Risk are some of my favorite board games.  I also really enjoy PvP and the entire Pirate genre.  I have to say that I am a little scared at this point to buy the game right now.  Yesterday while I was on chow break I spent about an hour driving to different stores outside  the military base where I am stationed.  NONE of the stores had the game, not even *gasp* Wal-Mart.  ... needless to say, I was more than a little frustrated ... anyway, it got me thinking, am I being a little hasty? ... I would really appreciate some feedback on this game from the vets.  People that have played the crap out of it and can give me their honest opinion based on their experiences and the game play I am hoping for.  I don't mind a slower more 'Real Life'  ecconomy game.  ex: I want to know that if I'm growing a ton of beans on my farm, those beans are not just sold to some NPC for gold but they are sold to some player somewhere for him/her to make chili *laughs* to feed to their crew.  I know it's a dumb example but at least it kinda' sums up my idea.  I've played games all across the spectrum from MMOs to FPS to RTS and also non PC games like Settelers and a ton of CCG's and even more PnP RPGs ... I have patience and I also really enjoy being an active part in a guild.  Do you think this game would work for me?  I'm fed up with junk games like WoW and the like.  I want something with depth and potential.  If this would be the game then i'll just probably go out of my way tonight to find a store that carries it.

Thank you in advance for all the help you can give me!

Well from what you've written I'd say that PotBS sounds like a good fit for you.  It's very PvP and Society (guild/clan) oriented with a totaly player driven economy.  Everything in that list would seem to cross the "t's" and dot the "i's" rather well from what you're saying.

PvP combat can be a little dicey to get a good fair match-up of forces but when it clicks it is quite good (and this from a player who normally avoids PvP even  heh).  The game wasn't what I personally wanted to see with rather noticeably lacking solo'ing fun but if you're all about societies and 6 on 6 PvP battles and even larger Port defenses/attacks then it should be right up your alley.

And on another note *salute* for your service to the country.  irregardless of how we all may feel about the war, the soldiers serving on our behalf are both appreciated and respected.

    Arremess,

Thank you for the fast response and informative reply.  I think i'll wait on just a few more answers from Vets before I drive out 30 mins one way to the game store.

    /Salute

I do appreciate your comment and I have to say that although it can be difficult at times, I am thankful to be able to serve our country.

Honestly I just did digital DL from Sony's station access. The DL is only about 1.8 gigs and I had no issues installing and getting started right away.

yes, I've done digital DLs before and although I don't think there is anything wrong with them, I just kinda' feel better having the CDs and book in my hand ... and usually the DL is the same price compaired to the retail box game and that doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me.   Am i REALLY getting the book and the CDs AND all the expensive box packaging / art for free???  Someone gets paid big $ to make all those things and with a Digital DL I don't get any of that so why do i pay the same price?  I think it's pretty fair to say that  the 49.95$ has more than just the price of the game included.

    *shrug*

now if the DLs were say 39.95$  I might go for it ... but then again, probably not since boxes make good book ends and look nice on my shelf    *laughs*

True, I agree with that, although it doesn't stop me from paying extra just to be lazy =p I was just thinking if your having such a hard time finding it there is always that option.
