Cowboy MMO?

Luke321Luke321 Member UncommonPosts: 10

How come no companies are coming out with a cowboy/western mmo? I think it could be awesome. The factions could be like the law vs the outlaws, I just think there is a lot of potential in a cowboy themed mmo. Anyone else think so?

I think it could be very intersting as well.  I would think cowboys and indians would be more fun though.  Just think of all the character customization options you could have with the indians, what with all their different tribes, face paints, etc.  And different tribes could have different starting stats.

I actually started creating a game based along these lines.   It was fun coming up with ideas and imagining a game from the ground up.

I think someday someone will make a western mmo.

I would love to see a 'Western' MMORPG... but I would put a horror twist on it.  I say this because I wrote a story about a cursed town and all this epicness including some 'paladin'-like gunslingers and such.  It was a twisted tale heh.

OR what I would love to see is a Sci-Fi Western -> the SERENITY/FIREFLY MMORPG is apparently being developed but no one's heard peep from thsoe folks since the announcement.  Here's the forum for that:

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

I think creating a Western MMO would be very interesting. I believe that it would attract older gentleman, such as myself, that may have played cowboys and indians and davey crockett as a kid. I think the options are unlimited, and the game customization options would be very unique and worth-while. I would definately give it a shot, even if it had the graphics of Maple Story O.o

I vote yes, I love the concept.  I've thought the very same thing ever since I got to play Gun on the Xbox.  Great game, by the way...definitely a great system to work into an MMO as well.

For me the game would have to be sandbox though.  I want to only see two cities, and perhaps one outlaw den, already in the game.  The rest is player built.  Gold has to be gathered by the players, and it comes from either a mine or a corpse...and I don't mean wildlife either.  No real quests, I'd like to see the volatile nature of such a game encourage player-made quests.  People paying for you to guard a wagon or train of gathered resources....or paying you to distract or even run off some outlaws.  In the case of outlaws, paying you to run and gun with em..lol.

No loot either, all weapons need to be player made...sans some very basic firearms and such picked up in the initial towns.  I'd want personal crafting to be as important in this game as it would have been IN the wild west.  Gunsmiths were terribly important then, and I wouldn't feel any immersion if the players weren't a crux in that aspect.

*sigh*  Such a dream.  I'd be sold in a flat SECOND for that game.  They can even make it 3rd person shooter style like Gun for all I care.  In fact, I demand it.  I don't want a targetting system, I want the players to live by their own means and by their own hand.  If you can't aim, then buy a shotgun.  If you can't aim that, then being a gunslinger probably isn't what you're about.  Grab some dynamite and a knife and hop into a stealth mission against nearby outlaw or civilian mining facilities.  Or build stuff.

I agree about the indians thing and the paladin-gunslinger thing. I just so wish there was a game for this now, i mean poker mini games where you can use your characters money....That sounds awesome...

Just a matter of time. Wait for the next big western blockbuster flick to hit, once people are tired of the current films. Someone in Hollywood will think 'We done all the kids toys from the 80s..what else we got? Need an old idea, fast!' and someone will dust off an old Clint Eastwood movie or Bronson flick, and then everyone will be psyched for Westerns again. Then we'll get a MMO, because once millions of people are psyched about an idea, then the big corperate guys will all look and say 'Hey, we can charge these guys every MONTH for this game, for years!'

I wouldn't hold my breath for a sandbox though, it has HUGE potential, but have to juggle the issues of alienating casual gamers with keeping the more hardcore interested in it. Maybe eliminate classes entirely, give everyone a basic combat box, and a noncombat box. and fork off that over time as the player advances. Who knows, but would have to come up with something that would appeal to the masses. With the cost of making these games now rapidly approaching the costs in Blockbuster films- to be realistic you got to think in terms of dollars. Even SOE or MS can only eat so much finantial loss before it has to jump ship itself. Making a game for the hardcore elite isn't really doable nowadays. Maybe with these lower-end free to play MMOs- hell get someone with a couple million to blow make a Western MMO with the model of the company as the government. Farmers, miners, all paid for their land rights to the government back then, buying the west bit by bit. Why not microtransact plots of land out to finance the game's continued existance and pay back creditors. Could have even more fun with the GMs appearing as the US Cavalry when they appear.

LOL I can see it now- Players stuck in geometry all yelling for help. Over the horizon appears a lone horseman in Union Blue with his saber and trusty rifle at his side, and a cheer goes up 'The Cavalry's come for us! HOORAH!' lmao Sorry, had a cheesy spaghetti-western flashback for a second.

Honestly, to make it more true to the genre, no blood. Instant T rating, marketing is happy, ESRB happy, I mean how often did Clint shoot at the badguy, and we gota huge fountain of blood as half his head disappeared? Heck, ketchup on the shirt was about it.

Anyhow, that's my .32 on the subject, maybe some aspiring new dev with backing for a project and no idea will come across this thread, and we'll get a new MMO to go on. But someday, it'll happen, with everyone desperate for ideas in Hollywood and in the big game companies.

I just checked the last couple of links out. One doesn't load for me, and this one isn't even in development. It is just a concept for a game, that the owner is trying to sell.

I remember a Korean MMO named Priest was going to be Western/Horror. I think that was canned a long time ago though. I think I would look forward to a Sci-Fi/Western like Firefly the most.

I actually typed out www.wildwestonline.com and it opened for me the second time, looks decent but I think the dev team has about 85 dollars to make it with LOL!

I'd want it to be semi-historically accurate and have multiple factions:  Mexican Gov Faction, US Gov Faction, Ex-Confederate Faction, Indian Factions, Criminal Factions, etc...  I'm tired of this two faction nonsense.

And I'll be the guy with the long iron looking to rob ya.
