Um i think the best ive come across is There. Its a nice game. Very relaxed and good for socialising. You an make castles/ houses anywhere in the game.
yeah. i played this for a month or so. You physically make the building in game. You can buy a wall then create a preferred skin for it. Can do it for pretty much everything in the game. I was able to create a castle bungalow on top of a tree.
Decent game its pay monthly and you will need to buy it. Its an old game to. Id imagine server population would be rather low.
The best by far was UO I have a char that was GM all crafting skill and could make anything i wanted. the only problem they ran out of land mass so unless a house fell from no use it was impossible to get any space to put a house. but if your where lucky to get ahouse you could make and put in alot of stuff to make it your own,
Best player owned housing was SWG, I hear Vanguard does pretty well. LORTO offers it, but I haven't seen it first hand, it might be good. Second Life is all crafting and player owned housing. There had it, but I never could stick around for more than 10 minutes. Entropia supposedly also has a system, again, haven't stuck around long enough to try to enjoy it...
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Best player owned housing and crafting in a game I've played is SWG. I think crafting was better precu though because they had item decay back then, and I think crafted items were superior to drops.
I would have liked to have seen Vanguards player housing and how it was implemented. I never got that far into the game. Just out of curiousity, if someone has a link I'd love to see what they ended up with.

For me the LoTRO housing totally misses the mark and is hardly any fun at all. The housing zones are instanced which means, from my own experience, you never see anyoone in your neighbourhood at any time, the storage on offer is so minimal that its better to buy boxes at the bank. I let my deluxe house go and havent missed it apart from buying cheap travel rations. I am sure there are some that love the housing in LoTRO, but for me its a big miss ...
I'd also have to say that SWG still has the best crafting of any game I've played. Prior to the NGE players were limited to a single character per server, which meant that if you were a crafter you were dedicated to it. You developed your reputation, and lived for your buisness.
Now, post-NGE, players can have 2 (and sometimes 3) characters per server which means that there are much more casual crafters making items for themselves rather then for the community. This means that people simply have a more difficult time becoming a crafter when many people can simply log onto their alt and make it for themselves.
I love the concept of dedicated crafters who have no combat role or interest, but that system IMO is lost on a game that allows for multiple toons per server as well as having item decay removed.
SWG, If you got bored you could always stop and just fool around with your houses. crafting was a needed thing and crafters actually had reps and loyal customers.
Vanguard's crafting and housing are very good. Here is a nice guide , but it doesn't cover guild halls, which are SPECTACULAR. This thread has some nice interior shots and shows the ways places can be decorated.
Here's a shot of a guild hall:
(sorry for the size)
These do take a lot of time and effort to complete, though.

there was no such thing as a droped item. you needed a gun, you best find yourself a weaponsmith you needed armour, you best find yourself an armoursmith, same for droidsmith, structure engineer, shipwright, cook, tailor and im sure im forgettinga few,
as for structures, you could drop anything in your inventory and place it in your house
also the way you had only 1 character per server, if you where a crafter, thats what you where, you had no combat alts, you would think thats boring just to be crafting, how wrong you are
guilds where ready to give EVERY SINGLE TOOL AND RESSOURCE to a good crafter to be in their guild. they where treated real well, and on top of gettin ghte ressources, they got payed as well.
with decay and all it also gave them the satisfaction to feel part of the war effort. an imperial crafter had to keep its imperial fighters suplied and equipped with the best they can offer,
if only they added more styles.
after SWG(pre-Cu) i would say Ultima Online since then you can create the style of house you want the bue print all of it.
then comes Second Life. but unless you pay land tier or rent from a sim owner you have no space for it,
i invested 10$ US and started makign stuff and selling them, now the land pays for itself and i take out close to 100USD per month. so basically i get money for playing and i own a castle in there, which i built myself.
Entropia, i would have to say that its more "game" than "virtual life" but ive never tried it, neither have i tried vanguard nor Lord of the rings. and i have not even heard any comments of housing in LOTRO
Housing without a doubt Vanguard. Far superior to any other in-game housing and they are player crafted.
Crafting I would probably say Vanguard to come to think of it, only considering games available at to play right now. Those are the areas that the game did very well.
Comments
Star Wars Galaxies. even in its present crappy form its still the king by a long shot.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I haven't played since NGE but the SWG housing and crafting was so good - nothing has come close for me

Ballistic!
Could you tell me some more about it?

UO, hands down.

But now no one plays it =(
What was/is so great about it?
plays what?
Vanguard I suppose.

Vanguard I suppose.
Tell my guild that, with 800+ characters, 350 or so individual players, and anywhere from 40-60 people on every nightI mean, seriously. Looks like it's down to UO, SWG, and Vanguard. Vanguard's population is better than either of the other two, so it's viable.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Horizons, Saga of Ryzom and a A tale from the desert (or whatever the name) might be worth a look into, if you are into these things.
I stop following these games years ago, so what are they like now, housing/crafting-wise, one may only guess.
