I picked up my retail box last night and rushed back home to give one of my good gamer friends the buddy key I had promised him. He spent the better part of 4 hours last night and another 3 hours today just getting the client downloaded. After having the PotBSfullclient.rar and the data3.cab and data4.cab downloaded he gets several errors when attempting to extract the files. some of them are [un-expected termination] errors and also [corrupt files] errors.
So here are my questions:
If he enters the Buddy key to activate his account, does he get an e-mail linking him to the 'Authentic' client or at least a web page that re-directs him to a Sony or FLS page that has a link on it for direct client download?
What web sites have others used to DL the full client [that have worked without problem] ?
Thank you!
oh'! I did find a link here:
www.piratesoftheburningsea.com/install
Is this the link that has worked for others ... because I get a 404 error.
Comments
When I initially installed back in Open Beta I had some problems getting the client to download and install properly as well. I *think* that I had to reverify the files (There's a "details" button on the launcher with a reverify option IIRC) and that solved my problem.
Good luck on getting him up and running
Make sure you do your downloads with Virus Scanners (all of them) Disabled. They can, and will, silently 'fix' and thus corrupt downloaded files.
I have found this to be especially true during use of SOE patchers and downloaders.
I am also surprised you have downloaded a .RAR and not the .EXE version of the full client.
Good Luck
Your link could never have worked, a typo maybe.

And he should not extract any files by himself. By running the file potbsfullinstall.exe he will extract the needed files. And maybe I remember wrong here but the installation would start after that is done. Otherwise he would find "setup.exe" afterwards in the same filemap where he orginally downloaded the files.
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

Yes, *laughs* it was a .rar. I'm not sure what site he used to DL the file. Anyway, we did find the correct Sony web site via the link above. That little buddy pass with the retail copy gives the wrong link, however, I guess it was made some time ago so I will not fault them.
It's good to know about that potential virus scanner issue early too ... it may save the community a lot of headache!
THANKS!
err if you bought the game retail and have the disks, why don't you just let him use those to install the game? Or if your have an external HDD install the game on your machine let all the updates happen, then copy the game directory to your External HDD and take it over to his place, install the game from your original disks and once installed copy the game directory from your External HDD over his game directory to save him the trouble of updating?
