Free MMO to screw around with until Conan?

TuutobTuutob Member Posts: 607

With the recent announcement of Age of Conan being delayed another 8 weeks, my friends and I decided we couldn't go too much longer without some sort of MMO fix. We are also pretty broke at this point and, even if we had the money, think that we wouldn't invest enough time into anything as a group for it to be worth the monthly thing.

I first thought of Perfect World as a possible solution, but I have heard too much about it being a grindfest 30+ for me to think we would have any fun with it.

So, I guess what we're looking for is a free MMO that we can go on every once i a while as a group, finish a few quests together, PvP a bit then log off feeling semi-accomplished.

I know this may be too much to ask, but if anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You could always play Anarchy Online.  Funcom's flagship MMO.  It's free to play (has ingame advertising) the basic game with no expansions.  It's  a pretty fun game and really in depth once you get the hang of it.  The only downside is the game is really old and it shows it's age graphically.  If you aren't the type to let graphics hinder your fun, then you might just enjoy an adventure in Rubi-Ka

Personally, I'd bounce through the free trials that are out there...just in case AoC doesn't deliver. ;)

Look in to any of the Aeria.com games.

Shiaya is a good pvp quest game... graphic along L2 style.

Dreams of Mirror Online.. is a really good game.. a grind yes.. but it is nice anime.. and has solid gameplay

They have quite a few others too

I was just looking into that in the past 10 minutes.

Is Shaiya really as good as people say? The praises seem synonymous to those of early Perfect World, and that's what kind of scares me...

Alright, back after a day of Mythos beta. it's alright, but I couldn't see myself playing it for longer even if my friends had it (I don't even have any invites to give out...).

But, I'm kind of looking for something more. We all just got burnt out of WoW and I have gone through DAoC, Ryzom, AO, Shadowbane, DR, Perfect World and I just can't see me (or us) going back to any of them.

I think I would be happy with something with decent graphics, good group questing, good PvP and not too cartoony. It doesn't even have to be free at this point, I would just like something that I could play for the next 3-4 months and feel like I accomplished something(s) worthwhile.

    Thanks!

Sword of the New World might be worth looking into.  It's three-man squad gameplay is fairly unique.

Played: Champions Online, CoX, STO, PSO, WoW, lots of free-to-play crap
Looking Forward To: DC Universe Online, Blade and Soul

Cabal Online should be going into open beta for the US soon. I've been playing the closed beta, and it's more fun than any other Korean MMO I've played. The grind honestly isn't too bad so far and there's supposedly good PvP (though I sadly haven't had a chance to get into it yet, stuff's come up and the closed beta has set hours).
