Gold Selling

A.BlacklochA.Blackloch Member UncommonPosts: 842

As everyone knows: where there are lots of players - gold sellers follow. As in EvE Online, everyone knows there is a huge amounts of bots/macrominers or whatever you like to call it around. You can kill them all you want, but they'll just come back. And in WoW, every real Ironforge comes with a halfling rooted near the bank/mailbox, spamming gold selling advertisements. And as long as I have been playing these games, the Dev's can't actually get rid off these bloodsuckers. I'm sure these aren't even the only games currently on market, suffering from this feature. That is damn annoying in general, hurts the economy and really spoils the game in every possible way.

So my question is: Has there been any talk from FunCom, how they are going to keep the game clean and fight against goldsellers?

Silly OP, you just need to look as far as AO to see your answer.  There isn't much they can do.

Hell, they even stated they are going with item mall and in-game advertising for some of the upcoming MMORPGs.  I don't know if they'll have item mall for AoC, but you can bank on ingame advertising.  There publisher has signed a huge ingame advertising contract and they have said that one of the AAA MMORPGs this year will have ingame advertising.  Guess what, according to their site, the only AAA MMORPG they have coming up is Age of Conan.  At the same time, you can bet they'll be charging us $15 a month to play too.  These are companies and they need to bleed as much money out of us while they can.  Notice, they have yet to finalize monthly subscription fees or pricing plans.  This tells me they are still are still trying to find ways of milking us for cash.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

There's no indication that the Eidos deal has anything to do with Funcom. From what's been stated it appears to only involve their in-house productions and single player games. I can find no reference to MMO's in the PR. As far as gold sellers go, the only way to get rid of them is to design the game with no commerce or player exchange at all, good luck with that!

AoC all ready has pre-ordering available on gold farming sites.   Funcom was awful about stopping such in AO so I don't see this being fixed here.

The issue of Gold Farmers is a player issue. not a developer one. In the end, we drive the gold farmers. IN the end we are the ones responsible for funding account hacks and  exploitation of dupe bugs.

We are doing it to ourselves.

Very true.  Gold farmers can only sell to players, and the farmers are so active because there is a huge market out there.  So blame the RMT buyers.  They are the ones buying, and they are not buying at gunpoint.

as for what devs can do, they can stand their ground by banning etc and remove 2 week trials.

The thing is, the gold sellers are still paying money to FunCom.  If they start banning sellers and whatnot they would be loosing out on revenue.  Depending on how big of a gold seller population there is that could add up to quite a good chunk of change.

It then comes down to capitalism and weather the money is more important then integrity.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

i would like to think that Funcom (or any other company in this business ) is better than that. People that want to play and have fun should bring enough revenue for them. if not, to whom gold farmers would sell?

I sure hope so, but I wonder.  How much is enough for Funcom, in a capitalist market where greed is glorified, enough as a term is undefined.  I also wonder if its really so easy to identify a gold trader from a player.  Many a normal player turns gold seller when he wants to bail a game or change server, or becomes a gold buyer when he move to a new server or whatever.
