I am on the verge of buying this game and have a question about classes.
BUT, please don't flame me just because I played WOW and will probably compare stuff to that experience.
Me and my wife played as priest/mage and had a wonderful good time. However, we're done there and ready for a new game, hence... LOTRO.
My question is, what if any suggestions might you all-powerful and all-knowing veteran players....have for us pitiful and not-worthy noobs to LOTRO as a good combo class for us to play together as? We basically will be questing our way around with each other and don't mind the occasional grouping with 5-10 people, but the raiding was killing us. Are there any combos that will be worthless and require another class to help? Are there any combos that make for kick butt questing/boar killing?
Also, any other good noobish advice would be great, so I don't make it all the way to lvl 30 before realizing I picked the worst soloing class ever just for Lore reasons.... GRRRR PALLY!!!!!
- Thanks

I wouldn't roll two Gaurdians, but darn near anything else will do just fine. The classic tank healer combo (Gaurd/ Minst) of course works really well. Both of those classes solo just fine, and it would also be a solid core for PuGs, since DPS classes are a dime a dozen.
However, honestly, play whatever you feel like. I've played extensively in a two person hunter party (to 50), a Burgler/ LM party (to mid 30s), and a Guard/ Champ part (to low 20s). All do quite well, this isn't really one of those games where all but a few combos are gimped.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
I have three suggestions in my semi-noobness (2 months of play):
My main is a Minstrel and I have duoed quite a few times so far:
Quest Weedwacker - Min/Champ - Cut through low level mobs quickly especially with the AoE dmg available to both. Elite fights require a bit more healing and therefore take a little bit longer because the Min has to switch form DPS mode to healer.
Slow But Steady - Min/Guard - Not much this combo can't do in the game...can be a little slow on mobs especially if Guard stays "sword and board." With the two-handed weapon you move a litte faster but the key is the tanking aspect and your ability to take on larger mobs without too much panic.
Crowd Control To Major Tom - Min/Burg - This was a surprizingly fun duo for me to play with. Burg does pretty decent damage and with their CC abilities and the Min's stuns and fears, not mob seems to be to difficult to handle. The increased amount of fellowship manuvers is also a big plus.

Ministrel / Burglar is completely wrong. Since both of them wear light/medium armor. Burglar also does not generate almost no aggro , while ministrel generates plenty.... It might work sometimes. But surely not in quests that require full group.
Min/Champ is probably the winning combo
Min/Guardian is a combo that can do 100% quests withouth outside help (but would need to be a bit higher level than quests)
Good question here ...
The "traditional" MMO combo of tank and healer translated into the LotRO classes are certainly Guardian (tank) and Minstrel (healer). You can't go wrong with this combo. You can deal with many situations in this combo and when not then you also have characters that are highly desirable for groups. Again, a combo with few drawbacks and the biggest drawback probably being the traditional play-style of this combo. Other posters already have suggested this combo too.
If you want something more exotic then LotRO offers some, in my opinion, more exciting combos, but keep in mind that these combos might be more difficult to play. However, you get a more varied playstyle - and lot more of utility. Here are a two of these more exotic combos that nonetheless can work well:
- Captain/Loremaster: Very versatile combo but needs planning and intelligence. Both the captain and the loremaster have a pet, thus you have four characters to control, great fun experience but not as straightforward as the tank/healer combo.
- Burglar/Champion: No healing in this combo (take potions with you) but a lot of dps and reasonable crowd-control. You'll be devastating damage dealers with still a good amount of utility.
Here's the usual description of LotRO classes:
- Hunter: lots of ranged dps against single targets, little utility, however fast travel if you like these things.
- Champion: lots of melee dps against single or multiple targets, no utility.
- Guardian: traditional tank with some dps, no utility.
- Minstrel: traditional healer with actually a very decent amount of dps, little utility.
- Loremaster: pet-class, good dps, plenty of crowd control, high utility, decent healing.
- Burglar: stealth, very decent dps, decent crowd control, high utility.
- Captain: pet-class, some buffs, some dps, some crowd control with the pet, some healing, some tanking, the swiss army knife, jack of all trades and master of none
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
an interesting combo would be a loremaster and burglar due to the fact that you could neutralise a large grioup of enemies with blinding flash, riddle and herb lore and massively debuff with firelore, disable, power word command, gust of wind and benediction of the raven.
crowd control:
loremaster
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Blinding_Flash 30 second incapacitate
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Herb-lore aoe root
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Riddle incapacitate
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Bear personal CC tank
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Roaring_challenge bear skill, keeps an enemy busy
bear also has a short stun, and can be buffed for aggro gain with sign of the wild rage, and pots of oats and honey.
both classes also have several stuns.
debuffs:
loremaster
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Benediction_of_the_raven -10% fire mitigation.
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Gust_of_Wind damage + 7% miss chance (aoe)
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Fire-lore melee debuff and 2% miss chance (aoe)
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Sign_of_Power:_Command attack speed debuff and parry chance debuff (spammable)
LMs can also get procs that increase miss chance by 15% (dizzy) and -20% movement speed from harried.
burglar
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Trick_Disable melee damage and attack speed debuff
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Trick_Dust_in_the_Eyes miss chance and movement speed debuff
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Trick_Counter_Defence defenses debuff
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Reveal_Weakness +damage taken debuff
a high number of ways to totally mitigate the enemies offence
dealing with archers:
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Distraction -50% ranged offense, also greys out any archery skills (works on blackarrows too...)
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Wind-lore -50% ranged damage,attack speed debuff
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Trick_Enrage can be used to force archers into melee combat
healing:
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Mischievous_Glee instant heal and small heal over time
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Find_Footing evade chance, stun removal and heal
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Beacon_of_Hope heal, great with both loremaster healing traits
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Inner_Flame loremaster and pet heal over time
http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Wisdom_of_the_Council large instant heal
the loremaster also gets the flanked effect pop up occasionally whilst using a pet. they can then use this skill http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Sign_of_Power:_Wizardry for an instant heal.
loremasters can also cure stuns, disease and wounds, whilst burglars can remove poisons. This is a huge advantage due to the nature of many mobs in the game that use debuffs.
playing as 2 humans will also give you this trait http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Strength_of_Morale_%28trait%29 which is a 3000 morale heal on a 1 hour cooldown.
With the book 12 changes, burglars will also be able to take a friend into stealth with them which will be very handy for questing.Elven loremasters also gain a very weak version of stealth through a racial trait which is worth slotting.
Overall a very unique and powerful combo which is always welcomed in parties.
Ministrel / Burglar is completely wrong. Since both of them wear light/medium armor. Burglar also does not generate almost no aggro , while ministrel generates plenty.... It might work sometimes. But surely not in quests that require full group.
Min/Champ is probably the winning combo

So I am wrong (and completely wrong at that...not even just a little bit wrong). Wait so when I did all those quests with only a burglar from lvl 38-40...that did not happen? I may have to go check my quest logs again. You don't HAVE to have just one person holding aggro constantly when you have multiple stuns/messes/fears plus AoE's. Open your mind to the possibility that a duo not involving a "Tank" works. Ohes noes, we only have medium armor whatever shall we do. Kill them...and that is what we did.
