There was an excellent RPG out for Xbox and PC last year by Marvel.
You could play any of their chracters. Character advancement, was not just along the lines of Web based attacks foir Spidey, spell based for Dr. Strange, but also they went with costume changes. Allowing you to play Dark Spidey with an associated powerset as an alternative. Or the three uniforms of Captain America etc. Ye olde Iron Man or el modern guy.
They have a lot of options ot choose from in the marvel universe. That said, I think the Marvel heroes will be NPC's. Quest givers and the like. Otherwise I just can't see how you would get enough players on the same server.
I really don't know the value of a comic book based super hero MMORPG. They are NOT going to let you play spiderman or any famous heroes. So what is the point? All you get is to have them as NPCs and look at them from time to time.
With that train of thought , why have any mmorpg based off of lore? Why play WOW If you cant play thrall , why play SWG If you cant be Vader , why play AOC If you cant be Conan, why play LOTRO If you cant be Frodo, etc
your all forgeting a few other things cryptic did superbly besides costumes......badge hunting a very well structured part of cox and all the spiderman games that unlocked lots of cool stuff from costume pieces in cox and comic art and again costumes in the spiderman games, then there's the amazing TF's that were in cox too, imagine doing TF's in the marvel universe..even better imagine its Charles Xavier that gives you the TF, complete the TF and get a badge with a new title for your toon like say "member of the X-men" and the abilty to wander round xaviers school *drools*

Because some characters are "bigger" in the lore than other ones. Warcraft is pretty much more of a game universe than a character-centric novel/show. Thrall has no where close to the statue of Vader or Spidey.
SWG & LOTRO (to some extent) are based on interesting worlds. The worlds are interesting even without the main characters.
The marvel world, OTOH, would not be very interesting if you take away the heroes. Thus, there a big difference of whether a game should be based on the Marvel world, or the warcraft world.
Marvel also has hooks. I don't think you could use 616 as a basis for the game, but if you take away the events of M Day and Civil War, you have a superb universe for heroes. Mutants everywhere, science powers, etc.
They could really improve on the gameplay of CoH - more missions, more interesting things to do, less fighting gangs on streetcorners.
A CoH with Marvel Characters, better graphics, and improved gameplay is a really cool thought.
In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

You just don't seem to be getting the drift. Why would you need to take away the heroes? Just like Vader, or Frodo or Han freakin Solo are NPCs that add to the flavor of their respective worlds so will the X-Men, Fantastic 4, Avengers and so on add flavor to the Marvel Universe. No, you won't be playing Spider-man or Wolverine, but you'll be someone new. Maybe a mutant, maybe someone who survived a radioactive explosion, or maybe just somebody who tinkers around with scientific gadgets. I'm sure we will see all of the freedom of the CoH Character creation process and more. More power sets, more costume options, a hell of a lot more enemies and quests. Task Forces, team ups, crossovers...whew, when I think of the potential of this game I get a bit giddy.
If you don't like superhero games, that's just fine. Go play WoW or LotRO, or any of the other billion fantasy MMOs out there...yeah there is ONE other superhero MMO...So you think all of a sudden that any other one is going to be exactly like it? Get a grip. The Marvel Universe has more background and more potential than any book series or television series ever had, and that includes Star Trek. On no, you might see people who don't have the creativity to come up with a new character idea and run around looking like the Hulk...big deal.
All I have to say is: Excelsior! See you in the game, true believers!

You misunderstood what I said. You can have the heroes as NPCs but you have to take them away as playable characters. I do *like* superhero games and Marvel Ultimate Alliance is an example of a great game because you *can* play spidey and ironman if you want to. It is just not a MMO.
My point is that I cannot see a marvel superhero MMO that is more enjoyable than MUA because being the particular heroes is a big part of the marvel universe.

or like in TSR's marvel superheroes rpg you rolled your own hero/villian which was a lot more fun than choosing one of the generics.
Well, sorry to have misunderstood you, but I still say that the fun of an MMO is creating someone new to take their place in that huge and well defined universe, not just pretending to be spider-man. I wasn't fond of MUA becuase of the top down veiwpoint. It was also an action game, not an MMO so you didn't really have the opportunity to develop a char, you could power up their abilities, but only ones specific to that character. This will be something far different. It'll definately be a Role Playing game, and to get the most out of it you will have to spend time to design your character, not only his looks, but his personallity and background. Will it matter all that much to the playability? Nah, some people will have a lot of fun playing clones of existing characters and I say more power to them. The only reason they didn't want you doing that in CoH was because of copyright infringement. Some people will be disappointed that you can't play as Wolverine or some other character specifically and have the NPCs react to you as if you really were that person, but I think they will be a minority compared to those of us who want to create personas of our own.
