So, to start with the beginning.. i played wow since the Beta, but aprox 1year ago ( when TBC was released) it started to get boring. I was a hardcore raider with T3 and stuff, and was really looking forward to TBC. I liked the raiding part, especielly Naxxramas, which was a great instance. As i entered outland and got the first few greens i started to look at my gear. It was not "that" overpowered anymore, and as i climbed to lvl70 i only had 1-2 T3 items left. I started to get an empty feeling, all that i had worked so hard for was starting to get crappy. so it took me aprox 10days to reach lvl70, and short time after i was doing Kara and replaced my last items. Since then i have been in SSC / TK, but decided to stop raiding when "Wrath of the Lichking" was announced. I decided, that the "new" bosses in TBC wasnt that fun, and i didnt want to spend time grinding gear that im gonna replace "soon" anyway, when they gonna turn crappy. Since then i have done some PVP, but i find it very boring, including the arena, because IMO blizz killed the fun back in the days when they removed the rank system, and made it even worse when they added resilience.
So, here is my question: Do you think Blizzard gonna trash the hard earned gear with Wrath of the LIchking, like they did with TBC ?
Comments
I believe the gear you aqquired now will be crap just like it was from WoW to TBC..
I agree that blizzard has ruined the fun with the burning crusade, i find the content not really "WoW-like" i prefer Azzeroth, and everyday i pray that blizzard releases some PreTBC servers, but that will never happen unfortunatly, so i hope that WoTLK will remove resillience and give back the old day feeling for a little part.
Personally, this is why I like expansions.
I play these games to raid and adventure, the bonus is that eventually, I'm rewarded with better stuff than I already have.
Why was WoW boring you before TBC came out? Because you were fully geared and had seen all the content.
TBC gave you new content and new stuff, a reason to keep playing.
After all, this is what makes mmo's fun, work hard and get cool stuff. This is why the expansion has to provide what it does.
Think about this, what is the alternative? New content without better stuff than you have? Do you really want to do all the new content and come out without a better set of gear than you already have? Now, thinking about it that way - you'd do a new instance once, the challenge would be fun, there would be no more loot to get however, so after lvl capping, doing each instance once, you'd be done and just as bored with WoW as before the expansion.
If your thought is that expansions should provide something other than new content with new better gear, it would be a different game. WoW is about completing content to get new gear. Anything else and you'd be changing what WoW is about. So I'd say, if you are done doing content to get better gear, you are done with the central premise of the game. You need to look at a different game, and probably not an mmo, because they are all about 'do the content, get better stuff'; and so are all their expansions.
If new content and new stuff isn't exciting, it isn't that Blizzard failed you, its that you are looking at the expansion in the wrong way, try approaching it from, 'this new dungeon will be cool and maybe I'll get an upgrade' you know the feeling that kept you playing WoW in the first place.
If that isn't the case then- the central purpose of the game doesn't do it for you any more, and rather than thinking you've been failed by Blizzard for not creating a new game with a new purpose with their expansions, just tell yourself, 'that was a fun ride, time for something new'.
Trust me, for many of you, with WoW being your first mmo, this is the first expansion you've had to face. People went through the same thing with Everquest when Kunark came out. Then with every expansion after. Just look at their boards, people crying for 'classic' servers stopping at the content where they had originally topped out. If they topped out in Kunark, they want the classic server to stop there. If they topped out in Velious, well then that's where it should stop. Some even want Luclin to be the end of the classic time. When PoP came out, people had so much to do to re-reach the top, you have a huge percentage that believe the game was forever 'ruined' by the expansion.
I truly believe that this expansion bashing says more about the players attitude than the developers problems. They kept you hooked for years with 'new content - get better stuff'. They want to provide you more of the same, but it seems that what many of you want is a game that will keep expanding, but as it does, keeps you at the top - sorry to be the best, it is continual work, not a finite job that ends at some point.
So, to those who have quit WoW and moved to another mmo, because Blizzard forced you to do new content to get new stuff, I say this:
Enjoy your new mmo, where you will do new content to get new stuff.
I think Bliz done what they had to do. I do know that pre TBC will always stay with us as the time when we had the most fun. We could however not expect that to go on forever, profit is what all companies are interested in and with TBC there was more money to be made, new subscriptions and all the rest that comes with it.
When I first saw those TBC beta lvl 61+ weapons a frew months before the release I realised that all my hard work ( as I can consider 4-5day/week raiding more less work ) that I put into the game is just going to go up in a smoke and the rewards will be gone. I know it sounds like loot was all that mattered, but at the end of the day once that last boss dies what left is to collection of gear.
It is a cycle that Bliz follows, give you a challenge to be up with the rest when lvl-ing to 60, then race to finish the dungeons so players can be proud what they have achieved, then move the rest of the non hardcore players to the same lvl by bringing out new items or lowering the difficulty of instances, then they wait till all the 90%+ non raiding subscriber base start to get bored and an expansion appears. Rinse and repeat again.
I myself gave up after some raiding in TBC as I felt I could not do another year or even more of just raiding. I got to the point that I was giving myself task such as how much money I could make a week just to amuse myself.
I loved the social aspect of the game although wherever I went the big 3 always caused faction between players. ( those are progression, inclusion of all members, loot distribution ) and those issues started to appear more and more regularly. Especially when boredom sets in.
I am sure that the new expansion will bring again new players who will go through the same learning curve as we all did wether it is negative or positive.
I have nothing but fond memories of this game now 6 months down the line but to try and go through it yet again I shall pass on.
WoW is a level and gear based game.. the fact that the epics you spent months gathering would not last forever should not of come as a shock to any one,... yet they still post like it was some great suprise.
Also remember that your T3 gear (any pre-TBC gear) is very different from TBC gear as it does not have the new stats of resiliance, sockets and higher HP.
If you only playing WoW for "the gear" then better to stop now, I play WoW for community and friends above all else.. of course getting that nice shinny epic is always nice.
They damn well better. Why else would I get it?
I agree , very well said.
The expansions allow new players to get into raiding and actually be able to get somewhere. With TBC out so long, new players are hopelessly stuck in Kara. Because of Wrath, they will get a chance to strive for all the raiding content in it.
But please don't complain that you're not an overpowered killing machine anymore.
Did you bitch like this when you replaced your level 60 blues with purples? How about when you replaced tier 1 with tier 2? Did you complain like this for AQ? How about when you ultimately got rid of all that gear for tier 3? Would you have made this boring, run of the mill "TBCs greens nullified all my epix!!!11!!!" if tier 4 was from a level 60 raid?
No matter how good your gear is it will eventually get replaced. Deal with it or shut up already.
To answer the OP,most definatly blizzard is going to make the current tier gear crap.If blizzard wasnt lazzy they could have done the following with TBC and future expansions:
For every tier gear they should a quest that would bring it in line with the curent higher counterpart added by the expansion, like tier 3 would be converted into tier 5 or 6 via a quest, may the quest pretty easy but still require abit of hard work. And your problems are solved... but blizzard wants to force players into buying their expansion packs!
It would be nice to give deep raiders and pvpers some kind of benefit to carry forward beyond gear, like a little buff they can cast for being a "hero" or some such - nothing grossly unbalanced but a little edge for the many many hours of work, and a badge that shows the rest of the players that they've gone far. But, personally I'm fairly casual and like how an expansion re-levels the field for a bit. It ensures I'm not too underpowered in pvp so that it's actually fun. Maybe it's ok to let players get way overpowered for pve, but in pvp it would drive casuals away (like the twinked-out lower bgs do.) And afterall, my sense is WoW's true backbone is "serious-casuals" (like me.) They have a knack for catering to the majority - which is why many people don't like it - but more people do.
This already exists in the form of reputation. When you raid a bunch you will gain significant amounts of reputation which allows you to get all sorts of additional equipment, trinkets, recipes etc. You can't get to the highest levels of reputation with many of the factions in outlands without doing a significant amount of raiding.
For PvP'ers, you can save the honor points and tokens you have accumulated in BG's and use them once season 2 arena gear becomes available in the expansion.
I like raiding. I am looking forward to all WoW expansions just because they will bring new content and a new beginning for all players.
I am sure that all those guys whining for their nerfed gear, will be exactly the same who will whine because they have no new content / challenge to face.
For me PvE is a challenge, and tBC brought new challenge for me. Anyone who tries to achieve a permanent “god-like” level better reroll to a traditional (not a MMO) RPG.
The is the mode of operations for MMO's these days. They do this so players have a reason to buy expansions. Since in WoW the only meaningful character development in the end game is thru items, they have to put in superior items. Unfortunately for TBC, the only reason to go there after the next expansion is to level 60-70 and there won't be any reason to stay because it won't offer anything for anybody beyond 70.
