mmo/ gmud pen and paper style with in depth char creation

Hello! 

I am looking for an mmo with very in depth char creation/customization.

i have tried most of the older mmo's uo, eq, ffxi etc but i really want something with some very detailed char sheets that you are able to adapt and modify and develop (kind of pen and paper style)

, would prefer some form of graphics but am open to any suggestions. 

haven't tried wow or lotr, not sure f my comp would handle it well, would like crafting and a very large amount of items to be available.

also i tend to sway on the side of player housing as i am a massive pack rat.



there would need to be a large amount of skills available, and many paths open for development.

i remember playing a gmud a while ago that had hundreds of career paths and almost endless loot items but i can't seem to find it again now.

also there would need to be some form of ingame chat available.

any ideas or suggestions would be great!

 want something to use my brain on  in between my general hack and slash grinding!!
