is the fx5200 video card AGP?

zereelistzereelist Member Posts: 373

Im trying to find out the best video card i can get, that my mobo can support. I found the 7600GS and its AGP, so im wondering if my  fx5200 is AGP.

Also if anyone could tell me if there is a free program that i could run to find out what my mobo can handle that would be great, as i need to find out if it can handle 2 gigs of ram as well.

I think your graphics card is APG, just beacuse its so old.

CPU-Z is a program that finds all your system specs, I recommed it

    can be downloaded here: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

2 things. 1: Any Geforce before certain flavors of 6800 were always AGP. or PCI (edited for clarification) That card may be 8x capable and it may not...it should work just fine for multimedia but not likely to play any sort of up to date game.

Also, the program to recommend is not CPU-Z. CPU-Z will not identify graphics cards. What you want is  www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ (GPU-Z). This one will identify all the information on your graphics card if you are running windows.

Yes its definately agp, cause i used to have one (lol like 4 years ago). There is also a pci (not pcie)version, but it is slower.

I used to have one too, but that doesn't designate whether it is AGP or PCI. I corrected my post on that part. We have no way to tell until he runs something like GPU-Z and/or checks for himself somehow.

I ran the cpu-z and it told me i have 1 AGP 8x/4x slot. So is it safe to say i can use any AGP graphics card such as the 7600GS?

Short Answer: Yes, at the maximum speed AGP supports (which is 8x) versus the maximum for PCI-E (which is 16X).

    Long Answer: Below

Yes, that is the case. I think they released a faster AGP than that if you're looking for performance. One is the 7800GS and the other is the X1900XT.   Be aware that at some point games will be limited by your processor and that also the cost of the AGP card versus slowly building up a new system might be negligible.  You may want to take a look at Anandtech's pricing guides to have an idea where things are at (baseline). These guides are anything from whole system to like a current look at video cards, etc.

It's nice to see people actually answering questions related to an older computer and not telling the person they have to upgrade for once.  Good job.

Yes, you can use any 4x or 8x AGP card.

And the 7600gs is a nice card. I'm still using one right now, and I can play every game that has come out with the exception of Crysis...that is a monster.

(I could probably play crysis if I turned everything down.)

    D.

edit: the fx5200 is AGP, I use to have one of those too...I HATED that card.
