So I need something to hold me until AoC. I already have Tabula Rasa but stopped playing, it's fun when there are many people but on the level 25+ zones, it's all empty except on saturday.....
So I'm thinking about either EQ2 or LOTRO. I downloaded EQ2's trial but unfortunately you can't see many things in the tutorial island..... I can't try lotro this month because of my stupid bandwith cap (20GB a month, on a 7.1mbps connection mind you....). I thinki I'd like EQ2 but lotro too and lotro is $15 cheaper.
However, I've heard things like EQ2 was now pretty much solo. I don't mind playing alone a bit when it's no more a MMO... For instance, just take guild wars, it's almost impossible to find a group in the end game....
For LOTRO, if I buy the game today, woud the included client on the DVD be up to date (book 11 already on it)? I've seen that it gets 1GB patches..... If the client is like 6 months old, I won't be able to play this month.
Thanks!

u can leave that island or even start in another place but i say none cause both are a waste of money.
Not on the trial, they all have the same starting island (with different npc names, but the map is the same) except the Fae. And when I went to leave I got a popup saying "thanks for the playing the free trial, buy the game to continue"
What do you suggest then?
You'll be downloading at least 1 GB of patches for either game. You will, however, probably finish everything in LotRO if you're moving to another game later, where you won't even scratch the surface of EQ2 in that limited time. You'll have plenty to do, but there's so much more in EQ2.
"Granted thinking for yourself could be considered a timesink of shorter or longer duration depending on how smart..or how dumb you are."
Okay thanks. I already have the EQ2 client installed because of the trial. I know it's a bit different but I'd just copy the pak folder from the trial
If the lotro client is like, from this summer and only has book 9 in it where I have to download book 10,11 and 12 that is comming soon, it would be a bit too much
Anway, I see you play EQ2 so can you tell how is the community? Is it hard to get a group to play on or...?
Community is very good, helpful and insightful, for the most part (you're going to have bad apples in any game). If you keep an eye on the level channels, and meet some people, watch for guild invites and stay away from these, "I'm forming a new guild, will anyone help me?" or the "Will someone help me form a new guild?", you'll be fine.
I rolled a new character recently in Faetown (Greater Faydark) hoping to be able to level solo and not have to be bothered with any groups. A few posters here were posting that there are no people and dead at low levels crap, so I was hoping to be left alone. Well, I found out they're liars and I can't stay out of a group, and even joined a guild of newbies with 150+ members to tool around with. Well, so much for the "opinions", my favorite catch-phrase since reading these forums, of some.
If you're alert, friendly, and don't suck, you'll be fine. I really mean it about the "don't suck". Reputation in EQ2 is TONS more important than any game you'll play. You're name gets around, and you'll be treated, or not treated (invited), according to what people say. Reputation is more important than gold.

Okay thanks. I finally decided to try cabal online but I think I'll get EQ2 near the end of the month or at the beggining of march.
On one of the "heavy populated" servers, I did seee a lot of people in the tutorial zone so I guess it can't be that bad. It's still one of the most populated MMO after all, isn't it?
I remember my trial of Lineage 2 a year ago, I joined an heavy populated server and didn't encounter anyone in 3 hours... God that was boring -_-
For repuation, is it like Maplestory where one skill point put at the "wrong" skill is instant= YOU F*CKING N00B!!!!!!!!!!!
Lord of the rings online has the advantage of actually being Tolkiens world, as opposed to a third-generation copy. Almost every fantasy game is LotR crossed with D&D. I wondered how EQ1 got away with the dark elves with light hair and black skin.
I played the EQ2 trial last week, and the LOTRO trial this week. I think they are both good games, and get more flak than they deserve. I did find the population in EQ2 extremely low, to a point where it was frustrating to play because alone I had a hard time against anything. And I'm not one to kill mobs to level up in order to be able to take on the next quest, I prefer to be able to do the quest as soon as it's given to me. It could have been a combination of timing, or my server choice, so I don't know. I wasn't really planning on buying it in the first place, I have other things I need my money for lol. But yeah, I don't think I really got to see enough of the game with the trial to know what's really going on.
Lord of the Rings didn't grab me at the beginning as well as EQ2 did, but at some point I did manage to become addicted. The quests range from boring and stupid, to really well written/designed, and I found the community a bit more welcoming than EQ2. Lord of the rings is definitely more casual than EQ, progression feels fast, most quest drops are very close to every mob (95% of the mobs will drop the quest item), it felt a little less grindy to me. However, I don't like the combat in LOTRO as much.
I wish the EQ2 trial had given me a taste of its crafting system, because that's one of the things I like to take part in. Without the crafting in lotr I probably wouldn't have been pushed over the edge from not-going-to-buy to where-do-I-sign. I am having a lot of fun, but I really don't think I will be playing it more than 2 or 3 months at most. Mostly due to the fact that I have never played a game for more than 2 or 3 months without getting bored.
That sucks about your bandwidth cap, with games requiring such huge downloads all the time. I really don't understand why they make you download all of the content beforehand rather than streaming as you go. A few games stream and it works just fine for them. Oh well, what do I know.
Have fun with your choice!
LOTRO , because it is not a dying game like EQ2 is
EQ2 is not dying, but the haters on these boards do like to say it..often. But those of us that actually play the game know it isn't.
For some reason most of the haters haven't even tried the game, or tried it back at launch in 2004.
When was the last time a SoE MMO-game was shut down? And I mean shut down as in closed (so SWG doesn't count here).
When i say Dying, i dont mean it will be closed in foreseeable future.
I mean this:
Everyone is at max level
You probably know all active players by name
There is no lag due to high population server strain
Active developer team on the game are: 1 GM , 1 server administrator, 1 emergency developer (part time job)
iI have played EQ2 since the start and there are plenty of big guilds and lots of friendly "helpers" ( not so egoistic like WoW) Lots to explore with they many expansions. I'm on a short break ( after several years I'll need a break) So i´m on Lotro now And its a copy of Wow but with a more mature and helpfull crowd of players. So EQ2 are not dying at all, our guild got a lots of new members that are tired of Wow and the greed.
Proberly im going to play both...
EQ2 equals "need before greed"
Does the trial still make you start on the island or can you start in Greater Faydark now? (I forget).
If it makes you start on the island.. there is quite often quite a few people there. However, if you started on the "good island" .. disregard the bunch you see near the archway that leads to the ship (where you can leave the island).
For whatever reason that is where all the gold spammers sit. Never could figure out why they all start in queen's colony.. but anyway.
Not that this relates to your first post but it was just something I always found odd.
I think one of the other posters pretty much gave the best response.
If you just want something to pass time until May 20th... how much do you want to get done in the game you try?
In LOTRO you could probably pretty easily hit 50 and get almost all the content done. At least when I played it was fairly easy to get to 50.. and they added a lot of content after I left.
EQ2... you could make a good dent level wise.. as its faster now. But... you would not really see much of the higher end content at all.
imho that could actually be a good thing.
If you leave a game with things left to do.. before you have "done everything" or run the same raid zone the same night every week...
You can have better memories (if you never go back ;p) than I have of most of these game ;p
go with lotor.
eq2 is a dieing game like swg thanks to $OE.
or if you want a really good game that is hard and a lot of fun come to EVE.
Eq2 has more content than lOTRO...I was so pissed i bought lotro and i am a huge tolkien fan. I played EQ2 shortly there after, and there was a world of difference.....i would def recommend EQ2
Wile i agree EQ is not dying anytime soon, for longlivity Lotro trows the high dieces, whit a good future prospective, but Lotro is a casual game, if you dont like a lot of fluf, Eq2 may be better. But EQ2 is getting old and forgoten wile it shure will be here for a very long time becouse of a dedicated player base.
Eq2 had problems at lanch , and Lotro had non whatsoever wich also gives it a brighter future. But both games will be around for at least 8 years, unless soemthing dramatic happens. So if your Hardcore go EQ2 if your Mediocre Go Lotro, if your Casual go devently Lotro. Also EQ2 has like 4 exspansions and Lotro had zero yet, so its obvius EQ2 has more content but at the rate Turbine is going it sould only be a mather of time.
Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.
I'm in the same situation, I went with LoTRO - partly because I have too much history with Sony, but mostly because LoTRO and a prepaid game card can be had for a pitifully small sum. Three months of game time is about all you need to see most of what the game offers, then when your done, it's May! You'll have plenty of time to get your AoC hype on. Besides, to play AoC with any sort of fluidity, I'll have to buy a new videocard. Every dime counts.
The popular EQ2 server had exactly that problem

If your extreme hardcore , then you can see the game in 3 mounths yes, But even then there always things left to do in Lotro unlike other mmo's at least for casual players, Carfting, playing music whit friends, roleplaying, tea partys, But i think hardcore players just dont like that kind of stuff.
point is hardcore players dont realy know what casual is and therefor dont understand much of it or what there saying, like 95% on these forums are hardcore players, even if thay think/say thay are not.

Thanks guys.
Now I really don't know lol.
LOTRO is cheaper and I wouldn't have to buy another time card before AoC is out or at least the open beta. (I'd use paybycash with interact online for EQ2 to get 30 days code). . I don't plan on playing more than 8-15 hours a week. I think it would be the best choice since I won't end up paying for everything and only experiencing a bit of it.
Is it hard to get a group in LOTRO? I mean, is it like guild wars were everyone just want to be rushed or solo?
Grouping is EAASSYYY... LOTRO is NOT a solo oriented game, not AT ALL.
I would say Lord of the Rings....
And yes, the game is solo friendly, I don't know where anyone would get the idea it isn't...But there are also quite a bit of group oriented things as well....
Lord of the Rings is extremely populated, it's the 2nd largest subscriber rate in the genre. If you wanna play it safe though you should join the Brandywine server.. : )
I also heard lots of things that LOTRO needs a group from everything. I used to play tabula rasa and each night's "MMO debate" was like->
WoW sucks
LOTRO needs a group for everything
EQ2 is getting old after 3 years
EVE has a n00b unfriendly community
Lotro's collector is $25 at EB Canada (same price as the standard edition)
if it's between LotR and EQ2 then it's no question: EQ2
the game has now so much content and is so polished, LotR will never catch up with it
with the current expected launch date of 5/20,
you'll probably be playing EQ2 or LOTRO for at least 3 months
