the greatest 4th of july type holiday ever  "Australia Day, celebrated annually on 26 January, is the official national day of Australia, commemorating the establishment of the first European settlement on the continent of Australia. The date is that of the foundation of a British penal colony at Sydney Cove on Port Jackson, New South Wales, by Captain Arthur Phillip, who was to become the first Governor.[1] Australia Day is an official public holiday in all states and territories of Australia, and has also been known as Anniversary Day, Foundation Day and Invasion Day"

Couldn't australia day celebrate australia's independence from european powers and founding its own nation?????????

This is the funniest national holiday in my opinion.

Got nothing against australia but that is an interesting choice for australia day.

Its a bit tough because we have a more important holiday to celebrate then

Australia became an independant commenwealth state on 01/01/1901.

We are FAR to hung over to celebrate anything on that day.

    two questions

    Whats the drinking age????

And How hard is it to move there?

Ya but the whole penal colony thing makes it a lot funnier.

Columbus day in theory is about the discovery of a new content, and on that day we just pretend it didn't incur genocide.

    public holidays are as follows.

    New Year's Day

    Australia Day

    Good Friday

    Easter Saturday

    Easter Monday

    Anzac Day

    H.M. The Queen's Birthday

    Labour Day

    Christmas Day

    Boxing Day

so we celebrate a bunch of religeous days even though we are mostly secular, the queens birthday but we don't give a rats arse about her,  the invasion and genocide of the indiginous people by the criminal brittish,  labor day which is about limiting working hours, the turn of the year, and a world war 1 battle that we lost.

by getting drunk and eating lots of meat.

basically, we don't really care why we have a day off, but we do care about the beer and food.

    lol, thats very very funny.

i think there is often confusion from people outside australia as to how prevelent the irreverence and apathy in Australia is. We could be a republic, but that would be some effort, and really its not like the queen can actually do anything, and even the govener general is pretty much emasculated by tradition.

we could setup a more culturaly useful national day of celebration but the the political correctness mountain of finding the least offencive suggestion is a mountain that none of us want to explore let alone be bothered getting over.

Then there is the issue that other nations have a huge patriotic streak that we just don't understand. It really is hard to keep a strain face when there is an American getting red in face from some one burning a flag, i mean it is just a flag. A symbol, sure it's disrepectful, but we couldn't even be arsed to get the Union Jack off ours. Even after 90 years of bitching about how the Brittish knew that they would just kill us off by assaulting Gallipolli. Hell we celebrate it.

Besides, everyone knows that Australia is the best place on the Earth.

I mean, here we are embarasing all 3 levels of own government as well as the police and fedral police, on an  international stage.
