Free update?

I am planning on getting LOTRO at some point this week to see if I like it.After reading the article on customizations the writer said something about "free updates" he said there were four but it says there are 12-14 books.I am rather confused on this what exactly does that mean

They just call their collected updates a "book".  It can contain content, new features, fixes, class balances, and the like that are not large enough to be considered an expansion pack.

Well hope I got the layments terms of that definition correct.   They'll be somebody to correct it if not.

There is a main storyline to Lord of the Rings Online that loosely follows the events in the book. The main portion is divided into smaller "Books", which could be seen as chapters in the overall scheme, of quests, and content, based on what is happening in the main story. When Turbine releases a new "Book", this is a new update that has new content and the next chapter in the main storyline.

    Hope that helps. :)

You only missed the main reason why they are called "books".

Each new update (a.k.a. book) continues the epic quest line with a chain of new quests that are connected in some way to the story in the LOTR books, or at least connected to the lore. That is why the updates are referred to as "books".

Yep but the OP was looking for a basic definition to the term and I was thinking that content covered that.   Wouldn't really be too good to confuse a new player would it? *tips helmet*

Fair enough - i was assuming he was asking about why the update are called books...

    More info is never bad.

BTW - fancy pets can be acquired by class traits (loremaster) , or with faction traits (elves of rivendell). They are not very good fighters tho :)

Oh, and I finally comprehended the basic question. Looks like he was confused with how there are 4 updates and 12-14 (?) books :)

The game at launched had 8 books included.

    Update 1 was book 9

    Update 2: book 10

    (you get the idea).

Next update will be book 13.

The next book is actually 12, not 13.  Book 12 is on the public test server at the moment.
