The game of WoW doesn't attract me at all.  The only thing that attracts me about WoW is my friends.  But now, that ins't even strong enough to pull me back to that game.

All I can say is, the best games aren't MMO's.  I think WoW burned me out on the genre.

Er, I'd say your recall is what's broken.  I remember the infamous loot lag, where my character would be stuck in a squat for several minutes or more.  I recall server queues of up to two hours on a Saturday night.  I recall taking a boat and falling through and into the sea...and drowning and having to resurrect because my corpse was in never never land.

I recall my server being off line so often they had to give me a week's free credit on my account and 4 or 5 days of free rested experience.  I recall my guild having an alternate server to meet up on to play when our regular server was down.  In fact, one guild of mine broke up because the alternate server was up so much more often the leaders decided to stay on it.

I could go on, but  I'll get nailed for being off topic.

I played WOW for 11 months, left for 4, then came back for another 9, leaving for good once TBC's release date/content had been finalized.  (killing my raiding guilds incentive to continue)

15 months free of WOW, and no, I won't be going back.  EVE is my current game, and once the new ones come out this year, I'll give it a try.

WOW was good at many things, and not so good at some.  I can't call it the best game I've ever played, that honor goes to DAOC.  I'd still be there if it was the same game as it was back in the day, but now the new rules and low population just makes it a different experience.

Never had loot lag.  Never had 2 hr queues.  Worst was 15 minutes on SR and that only during primetime during the holidays.  The dropping off the boat bug was NOTHING game breaking and extremely rare.   Now compare that to AO or Vangaurd or Eve.  Or how about DOAC, where every dungeon was completely unoptimized for months, quests were broken, EVERY Relic seige would crash out the server, leading to a death & EXP loss, a completely biorked CC system that allowed huge groups of players to stand there for minutes on end stunned with nothing to do and how about those archer classes as well=)  Gotta love classes that were either overpowered or completely broken and worthless.  Thats a BAD launch.  However, look at when DAOC launched and the state of games before it.  You never expected a game to be functional for a year afterwards.

Your problems with WOW are a joke compared to other MMOs.  Obviously you've never been a part of a bad launch.  I envy you=)

There were quite a few other problems at launch as well. Though he nailed a good number of them. Most people would agree that WoWs launch was a bit rocky, yes there are other games who have had worse. However it isnt fair to say they had a great launch, because they didnt. If one person got his arm chopped off, it would hurt like hell, if another guy got his teeth knocked out, it would hurt like hell. Now if Lefty tells Toothless Joe that his wound hurt worse, is it going to lessen the pain that Toothless Joe feels? Most definately not.

I'm not saying that other games didn't launch worse, just disputing your claims that WOW's was all that wonderful, because I assure you, your experiences were atypical.  I did experience games that were better btw, Lineage 2, LotRO to name two.  Also can't speak to DAOC's launch, I joined the game 8 months later and to be honest, yours is the first post I've heard complain so bitterly.  Yes, I did hear about the class imbalances, such as with archers and the infamous chain wizzys (clerics) in the early days, but not the other issues.

But no matter, t his thread isn't about DAOC, it asked if I thought WOW was the best and would I be going back.  Answer was not really, and no, I won't be going back.

What keeps me coming back to Wow is the combat. It feels 'nice'. I cant define it exactly, maybe its the feeling of contact with mobs, or some sort of 'weight' behind movement..but its something I see lacking in many other MMO's, notably my brief contact with EQ2.

Being that 98% of what we do in this current gen of MMO's is combat, it better feel right, and Wow nails that in my opinion.

Heck they just made it even easier with leveling from 20-60 and made finding quest and quest items easier then ever.  No more searching around for a quest item on the ground or water, just look for the "?".  Even "wanted posters" have a "!" over them now.  Kind of says Blizzard must think the player base is so dumb they can't figure out where quest items are.
I think the three best mmo's right now would be LotRo, EQ2 and WoW.

Well, one can figure out where quest/quest items are, it is just NOT very fun searching a big place running around like a mad chicken for them.

WOW hit the jackpot when they realize that people want to have fun, not do tedious work. If I want to search every square inch of a large area for an item, I will go search for lost change in my house.

If at all possible, WoW is under rated.

I'm not sure I would be able to rate it "the best" as City of Heroes, Planetside and Eve Online have all been equally as exciting for me.

    It' definitely

    "the best value"

    "the best quality"

    "the best selling"

    and it's definitly excellent.

MMORPG's however are not  my favourite genre of game and fantasy is not my favourite theme, so my list of "the best games" probably wouldn't include any of them.

Sorry played them all, yep DAOC, Guild Wars, EQ, EQ2, Vanguard (cringe), SWG (Cringes even more), COH/COV, Perfect World, POTBS (major cringe), Eve online (decent though too slow for me), Tabula Rasa (utter crap Cringe!), notice the one's where I dont say "cringe" are actually decent games. Well Wow wins for me, best animation, atmosphere and gameplay.

Wow does not have the best graphics in terms of polygons but it has the best art form (actually thats whats missing from most other mmo's artistry, blizzard's art  and animation team is unmatched). What's funny is AOC, Warhammer, AION (umm can you say Lineage 2 with wings), POTBS and other games just do not have the quality animation and artwise like Wow does so they wlll not touch WOW. The only other game is Chronicles of Spellborn which to me has some cool looking spells and great artistry, this may be a contender (I may just play this one).

Is wow the best? Hardly. But there are a lot of things in that reptitive grind-fest I found lots of fun... especially after I got past level 45... the spot I always got horribly bored at.

Fishing for one, I fished more often than not... it was fun, relaxing, and you could get stuff from it. Part of my problem with EQ2 which I found really fun, was the lack of fishing. I think that started the beginning of the end for me.

Exploring, aside from the other-faction cities, you could explore pretty much anywhere... even places "you werent supposed to be."

Cooking, it could be stupidly boring at times, but it too could be fun.

    Crafting was just plain boring.

The stupid quests for drops that dont want to, really turn off a lot of players. "Ive killed 500 boars, and none of them have spleens!"

    "How many do you need?"

    "Two!"

    O.o

    The endlessly pointless faction grinding...

Oh wait, Im supposed to be posting why I thought this game was fun...

So what makes me go back occaisionally? I found the only class and race that is even the slightest bit fun for me: Draenei shamaness... I love my cute Draenei girl...

Blizz could make subscribers for life if they would add in housing and the supportive woodworking trade... but they are obsessed with catering to the lowest common denominator...

I wonder why people often use "best selling" and the amount of subscriptions as arguments to justify if the game is any good.

The most sheep jumping off a cliff does not equal best in my book.

WoW did alot of things right for me. Jack-of-all-trades, introduced me to the genre, VERY easy to get into and a bit of a sandbox.

I've outgrown it and so will many more who had WoW as the game that introduced them to the genre.

Seriously, I would have never ever thought that MMORPG was going to be my cup of tea, but it is and now I want more. More difficulty, a better (read: mature) community and better graphics.

Edit: damn, beating a dead topic with a stick.

Here is your typical WoW community. Community for me is what makes a game and WoW's is rotten to the core. Everquest WAS the best game but that Everquest doesn't exist anymore.

WoW is the best,     ... ...    ... of the crap MMOs that are  out atm.

Does anyone know how to make a mmoRPG anymore?

  • Are you telling or asking?

If you are askling and If the measure is about coming back then no.  I unsubbed WoW and never came once.  I have resubbed to at least 3 other MMORPGs other than WoW.

But I left WoW for solid reasons, not because I was bored per se.   I think many people leave because they are bored and that is why they come back.  Or they leave due to reasons that exist in most other MMORPGs.

Add in universal critically acclaim as well.  If everything that can define a game as good doesn't make it good, what does?  Great reviews, huge sales, loads of happy customers, ect.  What more can a game do to make it good?

If having no players, no critical acclaim, and bad reviews can make a MMO great, than just throw it all out the window because nothing matters at that point=)

Be happy.  You're one of many that would've found older MMOs a hard pill to swallow.  Thats why you never bothered playing them before WOW.  Luckily you can easily go back and try them now.  Just be prepared for a shock.

  • LustmordLustmord Member UncommonPosts: 1,114

    Yes.

WoW is the overall best game out atm. There's some that come in close second, but WoW is the best atm.

  • GishgeronGishgeron Member Posts: 1,287

I wouldn't call WoW the best.  It does have many "best" elements though.

    Best UI for sure.

Best music, and music IMPLEMENTATION.  How it cues, and when it cues...the dynamics of the fade ins, and the sounds of insects and creaking wood all place this game light years ahead of its brothers in this area.

Best implemented PvP in a game based around PvE.  Not the best PvP per se, but in no other PvE centered MMO is there anywhere NEAR as good PvP.  I lived in Battlegrounds, and before them...I lived in SS/TM.  I played a PvP server from day one because I felt those servers most replicated the actual feeling of being in the Warcraft world.  The action was quick, the class mix was fun.  The system was good.  It wasn't hardcore...but it didn't need to be.

Best Instances.  I don't care if anyone disagrees.  Nothing I have ever seen in another MMO's PvE has touched the feeling that places such as Stratholm and Blackrock Mountain have given me.  ZG was an awesome place.  But one of the best examples of this is one of the earliest ones.  ShadowFang Keep and Scarlet Monastery.  Between the music cues, the spoken words, the story behind these areas, and the sinister nature of them....It was a joy from the moment you enter them.  If only WC was that good lol.

    Best overall polish.

Best communication.  People will disagree with me, but ya know what...I've known about every game change that was going to happen months before it came.  I also had a better chance of voicing my opinion about it and that opinion being heard.

But those are just a few elements...other games have "bests" too.  CoH has the best character creation EVER.  Its worth buying that game for a month just to make a few.  EVE has the "best" commercial/PvP world...if not the most actually fluid world as well.  FF11 and EQ had some of the most rewarding grouping experiences.  UO had the "best" world for a griefer to live in...lord knows I never left the city.  Lineage has hands down the best asian themed MMO made.

Its all about what "bests" you are looking for.  If its a player driven economy with a fluid PvP world...then obviously EVE is the best game.  If its equal footing PvP with an interesting world and the ability to mix your skills then Guild Wars is the best.

Get my point?  WoW does manage to have more "bests" overall...but the ones it lacks are things that some gamers really like and there are games which offer it.

Everquest SUCKED, the classes were gimped, at least 80% of them were, and the game was a giant snore fest. WoW rules and stands as the best game ever!

     I have never tried WoW.

I am leaning towards giving Warhammer, Aion, and AoC a try.  If any of those games do not appeal to me then more than likely I am WoW bound to give it a shot and truly see if it is the best.

    Yes. agreed.

We should use the 93% score on metacritic to justify why WOW is a great game, not how popular it is. BC also won game of the year awards.

I read an article in PC Gamer (Feb) the point of which was about using cut scenes in PC games, but to my surprise the author waxed lyrical about some elements of WOW.

I feel that one of the things about Wow is the environmental immersion you can get in this game, walking through the Autumn Wheatfields of Westfall, or the snowy winterland of Winterspring, the beauty of Ashenvale or the strangness of Darnassus (which has to be seen at sunset). Play at night and take the trouble to look up at the sky- it's breathtaking!

Ofc, alot of the time you dont stop and look at these things, but if you ever do, It is truly breathtakingly created. Most of whic you will never interact with, it's just there.

I like that alot about Wow.

For me..no, the journey was fun for a while in WOW but I realized that it gets really repetitive and the whole time you are just working for some gear to wear around in town?  I think I'm burned out on the concept of "leveling" MMOs.  I think it's fine for single player games with a solid storyline but with MMOs it feels pretty mindless and repetitive.

I played EQ2 to 50 and did all the raiding etc then I was like....now what?  I realized there was nothing to do and quit.  That feeling came back to me very quickly once I started playing WOW.  The polish of the game kept me around for a while but I can't go back to it anymore.

Nothing lasts for ever, not even WOW. At the point you have consumed all the content, it is time to move on.

WOW is successful because it gives players LOTS of polished content and last a LONG time. But it still not forever.

WoW is good but it depends because I don't see it as the best end game. Also 1-60 is boring after one or two times which is a major design flaw.

Also increasing the levels to 70 was stupid. Now they are going to put 10 more levels which is even more stupid. However it's their game.

The best MMO's for me are

1)Asheron's Call (Has to be since it was my 1st MMO)

2)Dark Age of Camelot(before the downfall)

    3)Planetside

    4)City of Heroes

    5)World of Warcraft
