Ryzom was that kind of game. Obviously the market cannot support that type of game. Perhaps at $100/month it could [since each subscriber is 5-10 elsewhere], but I doubt many people would pay that. I loved Ryzom, but dropped my sub when I didn't have time to play [am kicking myself for that now!]
Much valid points presented at 1st post, though based on current circumstances I'd be hell surprised if the industry can in fact pull something that can fully justify the standard $15/month x [insert years] formula. A formula that's nearing absolute obsolescence regardless of whatever flaming projectiles prepped at me.
Another century is needed to hit the $100 threshold until they can figure a virtually active world that can exceed a solo play title at blow for blow aspects.
Why can't you just hang out in a visual chatroom and play your virtual guitar? The game you describe would be incredibly boring. What's stopping you from just hanging out in towns with current MMO's and RPing?
The majority of gamers find combat exciting, including myself. I deffinetely wouldn't play a MMO game with no combat.
Making a virtual mirror of our world seems a little pointless. I get enough of real life every day. There's no need to simulate little mundane details.
Maybe there should be a few extra options besides combat and there usually is but just be happy with what you got or go make it yourself.
Ive followed and played MMO's since the days of MUDS. In the beginning the focus wasnt all about combat. It was more about social interactions and community. Then along came EQ and suddenly the focused seemed to be heading in a different direction. Folks blame World of Warcraft for the lack of diverse complex gameplay but in reality it was EQ that killed the genre. Current players not be aware of this but 10 years ago it was thought that MMO's would be virtual world simulations. Star Wars Galaxies gave us hope that virtual worlds might still be a viable alternative to combat-focused grindfests. When SWG failed to become an industry leader, we got more EQ clones and no options. The industry is now sliding further down the ladder. Even the complexity of auto-target and specials is being replaced (dumbed down) with FPS style combat. Look at Age of Conan, folks are applauding its so-called innovation but honestly its just a modified version of a fps. What happened here ? Besides the occasional quirky game like Second Life, there are no virtual worlds for us to play in. With SWG's failure, it seems even less likely we'll get another sandbox game with focus on all aspects of gameplay ever again. I cant believe there isnt a market for virtual worlds. Or at least give us the options in the current EQ clones. Why cant AoC allow me to simply be a musician or a crafter in Cimmeria ? Why cant I just spend my time in any MMO decorating my home and building things ? I would gladly pay much more than the standard $15 fee to have this become a reality. I know there are many others like me as well.
Darkfall is in development!
But im not waiting for games like second life its crap and mmo,s as sim clones don't want that eather.
I want a game like morrowind/oblivion/two worlds and then as mmorpg well Darkfall will be that game but even much more:).
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!
MB:Asus V De Luxe z77 CPU:Intell Icore7 3770k GPU: AMD Fury X(waiting for BIG VEGA 10 or 11 HBM2?(bit unclear now)) MEMORY:Corsair PLAT.DDR3 1866MHZ 16GB PSU:Corsair AX1200i OS:Windows 10 64bit
Btw it seems people want simple grind games with many featers from games like lineage2 or wow, go dl last chaos its realy bad game, but server is high populated go figure that.
Im affraid avarage is so massive that for more complex and inovative gameplay, is no place anymore, unless darkfall will be released, that game is my only hope of survial hardcore in mmo genre.

I don't know if EQ killed the genre. I had never played MUDs prior to my MMOing, and it all started with UO for me. But after UO, EQ was like woah. I felt immersed in a huge virtual world. I didn't think "oh man, I have to start leveling and raiding ASAP" But I think for other reasons EQ's focus didn't FEEL like it was leveling. There was a lot of time for chatting, building relationships, etc.
And I agree that the new games now do feel like an EQ clone (Meridian59 clone?). They took what people complained about and "fixed" the system. Not to say that everything wasn't improved upon, some things are much simpler in newer games (like WoW), and are an actual improvement. Not all things though, and what it feels like is they listened to the gamers in what annoyed them in EQ and went about "improving" each feature.

The english server shut down now right?

I'd LOVE another sandbox like UO/SWG that allowed me to spend my weekly 10-15 gaming hours in doing something other than blasting the crap out of virtual baddies, but I don't think that it is ever going to come.
Look at WoW; the leading western MMO. No housing, no non-combat professions and a craft system that requires zero sacrifice/dedication and typically consists of "wts <substandard craftable> 50g + mats"
I think that the combat-oriented crowd are in such a majority that game companies aim 95% of their efforts towards the demographic. Crafting, Housing, non-combat "fun" professions all seem to be either ignored or treated as an afterthought.
If you happen to find a game that has more depth than the usual button-mashing PvP/PvE gankfest, do let me know.
while 100 bucks a month is a bit steep i would gladly pay double the subscription rate of most MMOs for an EVE like Sandbox game set in a medieval setting(or heck even in a futuristic setting but with more out of ship content,)
thats really the only thing keeping me from EVE is there is no out of ship content. if they made words where you could land and fight over resources on the ground I would be there in a heartbeat.
i'm hoping when Raph Koster's project is finished some creative minds out there will create great MMO worlds.

Or maybe that's exactly our problem...?
To the OP, with any luck, Earthrise will be the answer to all your's and other's prayers.

I do. I was a UO man.
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.
