So does this kind of thing happen often? I've only been in the game a few weeks and I don't remember ever being unable to log in. Overall, I thought the game had one of the best up-times of any MMO I've ever played.

As patience stated, this isnt due to a patch, its the third party data center they are using (thats why all their games are down).
Im sure turbine is just as pissed as you folks are.
