Hiyas all. I was thinking of picking this game up and dropping my current on due to total bordem. I wont mention my old game but I bet you can guess it with out much trouble.
I tried D and D when it was in beta and it was so so back then. But after reading a bunch of posts on how far it has came since then, I was thinking of trying it again. But I have a couple questions.
1. Which would you recommend on a good starting class. When I was om beta, I tried a cleric and a thief and liked both of these classes. But that was way back in beta and I am sure both classses have changed some since then. Are these classes still good for a starting person or would another choice be better. I prefered the cleric though cause it seemed you could get a group a bit more and had the tools to solo if you choose to. But a thief was fun also sneaking around and stabbing mobs in the back and the such
2. How is this game for the solo player that likes to solo but also groups also sometimes. I am about a 65% soloer but like to mix it up with groups also. If I have to group mostly that is not a problem. But sometimes I just wanna solo a bit to release the daily stress of work.
3. How is the game now towards new people? I dont wanna come in and have a bunch of people lining up to point and laugh at the newbie player. Also is the game newbie friendly? I dont wanna come in and be over my head right off. But I also want a game that is easy and basicly plays for you.
Well thanks in advance for any and all answers I get here! I just want a new game to get away from my current one. All I basicly do now is log on the chat with friends and help any new guildies with their quests if needed.
Comments
1. Cleric is definitely a good starting class, because of the ability to knock up a decent AC and self heal/buff. Rogue is a fun character to play, but probably the toughest build to master and definitely to solo with because of the lower AC, lower BAB, and lower HPs at low levels. Fact is now, you can have up to 8? characters per server...just play around! LOL!
2. You can definitely solo a LOT more than previously. They now have a "solo" difficulty setting on a good portion of the low to mid level quests even. Soloing is actually a lot of fun in the "explorer areas", where you can just wander around at your own pace finding bad guys and killing them, finding landmarks, etc.
3. Game is great for new people in the sense of getting help and grouping, as a ton of long time players have new alts they're levelling up. That said, a lot of those same players will rush through quests because they've done them many times...so make sure you tell them you're new!!! That way they'll slow down and let you enjoy
Good deal! I think I will get the game now and see how it goes. Thanks for the response!
I just re-started also, with my highest character at level 5 [ and a ton of alts!], so from a low level player's perspective:
1. Cleric is probably easiest, especially since you solo, too.
2. I'm sure that I will be corrected if I am wrong, but for solo [which is all I do on my "main"] I like cleric/rogue multiclass - there is at least one dungeon where you need an STR >18 or ability to pick locks to enter. I'd take Rogue first to get as many skillpoints as possible, then cleric as 2nd level, then rogue at third for Evade, then cleric for the rest. [I took 1 wiz to be able to use all scrolls and wands, but it wasn't necessary with the number of "clickies" - items with x/day spells on them]
3. With the release of Module 6, there has been either a ton of new people or a ton of new alts. It is not unusual to see 20-30 people in the Harbor [level 1-2 area]...that doesn't count the ones already in dungeons. I solo, so I don't look at the social panel much, but the least that i have seen is three groups LFM.

My suggestions are not absolute and I'll try to give reasons for my recomendations.
1. Try a Bard. The bard has the ability to cast some spells at low levels including Cure Light Wounds along with songs which buff you and your party. Higher levels a bard will get some powerful songs which will be a tremendous benefit if you're in a party or wanting to solo. Some songs lock down oponets and others might reduce the cost of casting spells for your allies.
2. Soloing in DDO is not it's strongest game play asspect although there's been active effort to reward the solo player to make it more rewarding. The better areas for soloing will be the out door adventure zones. The outdoor areas aren't that great at low levels where as the high level ones are awesome! These areas have randomly spawning name bosses, in most zones, which drop chests and the higher level areas have some of the best loot in the game.
3. The community is pretty good towards new players, but it would be a lie if I said there weren't any asshats in the game. The time of day you play during will also represent the community. Early in the day, in my time zone (pst), the community seems to be made of a younger crowd although later in the evening it's mostly made up of mature adults. Voicing your newness to the game should be more helpful since you'll either get a something like "Sweet! want some help?" or "u r noob", and the two different replies might be indicitve of which group of players you'll want to befriend.
Acessibiilty - The game is pretty dynamic at character creation which might be confusing if you have no familarity with any of the previous incarnations of Dungeons & Dragons rule sets. It's pretty easy to get a few levels then reroll if a build or class isn't suiting you. Characters are NOT ALLOWED to change their attributes other then the Enhancements where they spend the Action Points into and the Feats. Skills and Stats are permanent for the most part. Thankfully the early part of the game is pretty forgiving for te most part and shouldn't be too difficult for someone who comprehends the basic controls.
If you like solo-ability with a flare of team strategies I'd suggest a Bard. There shouldn't be much difficulty in locating quests, or zones, through out your leveling which could be solo'd if you define a strategy.
I play a Sorcerer, the same character I rolled when the game laucnhed - 28 points build. I quit 2 months after launch and returned a year later without any desire to reroll or build another character. While I have points spent in areas which have not been the most productive I have addapted my playstyle to the characters build.
For some reason I feel the character building process in DDO reminds me greatly of how the original SWG system was pre-cu. You can multiclass and build otherwise unortodox characters that accent your individul playstyle - intimidating-tank Sorcerers, Barbarian Rogues, Battle Clerics, etc.
So, what other game are you playing that's bored you?
I was playing WoW. Been playing it since day 3 after release. It was getting where I would log on and do nuttin but chat with a few guildies while doing my dailies then stare the screen bored off my butt. I tired a few new things like transfering one of my 70's to a new server to try and freshen up things but it did no good. A lot of my friends ingame were leaving because of RL issues so I decided it was my time to pack it up and walk away finally. Plus with my new job and its crazy crazy hours, I wont have the time to spend doing all the things I need to do ingame anymore <AKA raiding, pvp etc.>
I'll try out your bard idea. I rolled two toons. I tried a healing cleric but it was not my style then I tried a Sorc, but I keep dieing to much to make it even fun. I'll try out a bard to see how it does and all that good stuff! Thanks for the advice. I'll see how a bard works out for me.
The game is open to new players more than any other. You will probably meet players that will simply want to help newcomers waiting at the starting inns. Actually only in WoW I saw people laughing at newbies, in every other game people are trying to help them.
The game is possible to solo but it's very hard especially later on. Bards ARE great for solo, but not for newcomers. Bard is the hardest class in the game. Even if you know D&D system I would not recommened bard for your first experience.
The best combination for first character is undoubtedly fighter/paladin (level 2 fighter / level 14 paladin) or just paladin all the way up. But keep in mind the most fun is in groups and also it's like 2-3x times faster.
REALITY CHECK
I actually rolled a Barb after looking at some of the different builds on the D and D forums. I am gonna grind out the rep for a drow then decide what to make for a toon ) Unless I wanna keep my Barb cause man, he is fun!
I rolled a paladin and I'm finding that it is a very viable solo character. With the heals you get as well as the fighting capabilites, it works very well. Having a lot of fun with it. I have a sorceror but I die too much to make it a viable solo character.

In the late game I think most soloers are casters. You just can't beat ranged insta-kill. Firewall/cloudkill/solid fog are also great.
There are things I do with my wizard that I would not dream of doing with a melee character.
As far as self healing it's pretty trivial to UMD a sorc to the point where you can whip wands. Until then you need a bankroll character to provide you with lots of healing pots.
YMMV of course.

Hmm, I wonder if I can get my sorceror to a soloable class?

Arguably the best class at higher levels, we have a guy Sarezar on European servers that is always busy soloing high level quests, Madstone Crater on Elite as an example.
