Every time a new game is shown to the world, all I hear is WoW clone, WoW clone, WoW clone!!! It is starting to sound like any game that makes an attempt to be an MMO is being accused of WoW cloning. What exactly does this mean? Do people not understand what MMO's are anymore? WoW is not the first game to have you do quests, use skills, level up, and pvp and any other common thing that we expect from MMO's.

Meh, they used to call WoW Everquest lite.
People use the industry leader as the industry standard when reviewing things. Nothing is a WoW-clone per se....its more like everything is a "Classic MMO with Rollercoaster progression" clone. The fact that WoW managed to make that marketable on a massive level is just fuel to the fire.
I don't blame them for making those comparisons though...its healthy. Its gamers way of saying "hey look, we are tired of these overused mechanics. Give us something really new". I personally think that message is good for the industry. I'm tired of the same old crap myself.
What's even more fun is when people yell "W0W c1on3!!" when talking about games that was developed, produced and released long before World Of Warcraft.
That always makes me chuckle a little.
WoW-clone is an expression used by bored gamers to qualify a game which is not innovative enough to their taste.
Why "WoW-clone" ? Just because WoW is the MMO commercial success, and any company who doesn't provide original mechanics/content is considered to be trying to steal subscriptions from Blizzard by making something similar to WoW.
Hope that helps ^^
EDIT:
BTW, not everybody expect all these things. That's the whole point. I, personally, would actually enjoy more a MMO without levels or quests.---
Waiting for: GW2
*thumbs up*: GW, Eve(, WoW)
*thumbs down*: MO, GA, FE
I fixed this for you.
A WoW Clone is a post that should have been made in the WoW forum rather than in the General Forum.
Hint, freaking, hint.

There must be maybe 50 different system you can use in a MMO....but the most uses the same. So when another "new" MMO is relesed with the exact same system as WoW (EQ, Vanguard,WAR,SWG and so on) we call them a WoW-clone.
I'm pretty sure SWG came out before WoW did.
Wow is considered by many to be MMO Lite. The forced raiding endgame, bind on pickup, small linear game world, and shallow crafting are all factors that make wow "less" an MMO then what some people (like me) would like to see. So when a "wow clone" is created, it means that its just another game targeted to the casual masses, without the extreme depth and complexity many have come to expect from an MMO.
Don't get me wrong. Wow's a good game, and so are most of the wow clones. However, a good game doesn't necessarily make a good MMO.
WoW . Clone (Wa-O Kl-own)
Adjective
Any Massively Multiplayer Online game that has been released after World of Warcraft.
Ok now seriously, I can go on for ever by saying WoW has copied DAoC or Everquest etc...
Also I cant even imagine how people call the Warhammer Lore (not game) a clone of Warcrafts Lore...
WHAT THE F?!?!!?
Dont you have ANY idea how old Warhammer is? its like 25 years old, and the other way round makes more sense - Warcraft being a Warhammer clone....
A wow clone is a game that got copied by wow.
I mean when did wow make something new and not copy someone else for their concepts?
-Would you like cheddar or swiss cheese?
-Yes.
-...
Also this isn't about WoW it's about why people call every game a WoW clone.
Yeah, it did.

So did EQ but in SWG's case the NGE was a direct result of the Warcraft influence.I'm pretty sure SWG came out before WoW did.

WOW is a clone of the kings quest series, and any mmo that was out before it. nuff said.
can you smell that?!!...............there is nothing quite like it.....................the smell of troll in the morning............i love that smell.
a WoW Clone is an MMO World of Worcraft fanboys havent played yet and never will because they believe WoW is that much better and the "clone" fails to stand up to the popularity of WoW.
which 90% of the time is totally false and the term causes most MMOs to lose attention since they were called that.
WoW clone - a term used by MMORPG novices who joined the MMORPG world when the game "Wold of Warcraft" came out, this term was coined during the "WoW has better graphics than EQ2", "What is Ultima Online", and "Ultima Onlines graphics suck" thread eras.
And like "WoW Clone", this is a phenomenon usually unique to these forums and doesn't mean much in the bigger picture.
EDIT:
WoW - "A financially successful MMORPG"(in fact, probably the most to date)
WoW Clone - a game that tries to copy the above description
"WoW Clone" translates directly from Wowese into English as
"WoW was my first game, I do not like any other games besides WoW, and the only reason someone would play this game is to escape my uber pwnzage and massive purple weapons of glowy doom (and pwnzage) Kktnxbai."
Any sensible person knows that there isn't a Clone of any MMO really. However I would accuse Guild Wars of being such. Just based on the fact that some of the people that worked for Blizzard and on WoW went on to Develop Guild Wars. Besides really Guild Wars is the only MMO that is closest to being like WoW whereas everything else isn't. People need to get off the whole simular deal thing just cause games share simular MMO gaming properties that exist within the genre. I personally never seen or heard of people yelling WoW Clones before, so i think this is a dead topic.
