I was playing my first mission. which was assigned by some rich guy to defend the town. When I went out in my ship , I was against 4 ships! Needless to say, they handed me my " hat" plus when I boarded, I kept losing.
HELP. I need some tactics. Also, how do I buy from the auction house or anywhere alse some ammunition and smelling salts? Every time I make a bid, I get told that it is too low yet I bit more than anyone else has on that item in the past. HELP.

In regards to the auction house, I can recommend www.burningsea.com/forums/showthread.php Also, take an hour or so and read through all the other stickies in that one and the other forum sections, that will realy help you a lot. You will get more smelling salts with the first few starter missions in your starter town. No need to buy them yet.
On your question regarding the mission, my guess it it was the 'Man of Wealth and Taste' mission? You shouldn't be doing that one as your first mission. There are at least a few other tutorial mission that will explain a lot of things. One of the missions will tell you how to properly attack and then board a ship. Just look for the people with the green ! signs and sort the missions in your log by level, do the lowest ones first. Also, and I cannot stress this enough as I made the mistake myself, read all of the text of the mission and explanations. The auctioneer for example has quite a nice explanation on how the AH works, the town crier will explain a lot of other things, etc...
It must be admitted that this game is not the easiest to get into. I did what I normally always do when starting a new MMO. Create a first character and just do all sorts of things and probably mess it up. After reaching a certain level (level 10 or so) I just delete that character and start all over, but this time I know where I messed up and what I should have done.
Yea, you don't suck, you are just skipping the starter missions. Talk to the people on the docks and take the Fedex type missions, they are a tour of the town and show you the ropes as to who gives missions, who gives skills, and gets you into the flow. You will earn some money and experience doing them, which you turn in for more skills. These skills will give you what you need to beat the ship combat missions.
Don't worry too much about spending your money on stuff just yet. If you lose your starter ship the computer will give you another starter ship, so don't sweat it. Once you get the hang of the game, start checking out the ships on the market to select your upgrade. Save your cash for that upgrade. If you join a Society, most will let you have an upgrade at a price below the market price.
At least on my server, there are two price structures, one for Nation/Society members, and one for everyone else. This is because, for example, Spanish can enter a British port and buy British ships. So, if the British price them too low, like below cost, the Spanish would buy them and equip their new players with them.
Most nations/societies provide their members with stuff below cost.
