on the topic of fluff

I have to ask to all you anti-feature people who say it is all fluff.  Imagine a game without fluff.  Everyone looks the excat same, graphics look like pong.  Fighting looks and acts like the old type of runescape.  There are only a few spells.  NPC's all look exactly the same.  There is absolutly no depth, no in-depth quests.  No areas to explore.  No tradeskill system.  All the armour looks the same.  The only thing you do is fight.  That would be a game without fluff.

I submit to you that fluff builds a game.  What is a game without fluff?  The only thing you do is fight, and do really, really simple quests, like go kill this guy and your done, or talk to me and your done.  That would be a game without fluff.  It is boring to just kill stuff and do simple quests.  Fluff adds to that making a game much better.

What have you all said fluff was?  Good graphics, alot of races, tons of classes, large areas to explore, lore/history, player housing, boats guided by players, boats owned by people, character customization, high detail, all the ways armour looks, classes for tradeskills, branching system for classes, impressive tradeskills, a very high level cap, very in-depth quests, water graphics, snow, wind, rain, weather, factions, 100 of thousands of items.  That is a list of things i have seen people put under the fluff catogeory.  A game without features is horrible and a waste of time, money, and effort.

So if fluff is everything that you have listed, then isn't it ture the fluff builds a game?  Fluff builds a game, without fluff what do you get?  You get something i sure don't want to play.

To me fluff is the conceptual "bar" that is set by other games on the amount of "new" features and additives that may not be required to create a good game, but everyone expects the game to be better in these aspects than all the games that have come out before it. Lots of people will say that it is not needed and it is pointless, but if you don't add fluff people that glance at the game and don't read into it will just consider it a copy or consider it weak because it isn't to the current standards of peoples pre-concieved level of gameplay. This is because people are always looking for something new, if they wanted the same old stuff they would of kept to what they were playing. Though if the developers concentrate too much upon createing new "fluff" they tend to concentrate less upon createing a solid game. It is a delicate balance of trying to appease the masses because it may not be needed, but some people expect it.
