BTW, why is FunCom's reputation not stellar? All right, they pulled off a bad launch, we can all agree on that, but they have been improving and running AO for years now. It's one of the oldest games still played that's around and is actually STILL getting an engine upgrade even after being around for so long. I wouldn't say that qualifies as a failure, does it?
Well, first off, you never really recover from a bad launch, EQ 2 is probably the one of the few that's recovered. Second, AO has always been a minor title, sure some folks played it, but it was never an epic trend setter on the MMORPG landscape.
Finally, they ended up making some portion of the game F2P, which typically is a sign of "fail" for most fans of the P2P market.

Shadowbane sieges pretty much wrote the book on the subject. Every game is trying to play catch up the massive ammounts of innovation Shadowbane has created. I beleive if you think any game "made seging" epic, you where never at shangrilla battling 200 Chinese for 5 hours straight. 200 vs 50 of us, and we almost beat them ! Conan will have great innovations , but seiging will not be one of them.
Yes, SB set some awesome milestones - my favorite being server controls open to players. My city not only got sieged in all of its SB glory but it also got raided by max lvl monsters while we all got to enjoy a swim at the bottom of the game's ocean.

I think some of you mis-understood the post.
1. It was from a blogger @ Wired and his opinions that are wrote up from what he saw.
2. He says "The system they've created should, in theory, create epic battles unlike anything MMOs have seen prior to this. Yes, that includes Dark Age of Camelot" - Now read it back.. And again just so you understand
3. He was many who stipulate the same thing in the last 3 days from the GDC 2008 event. Not paid by Funcom..durrr
4. No one said what Funcom is doing with sieges is original - they even say themselved - lots of times. They hope to add their own ideas and mechanics in to improve upon previous siege experience.
I'm curious Avery - whats your professional affiliation to Funcom/MMORPG ?

Only affiliation is a Fan thats all mate.
I'm also a fan of the lore for a while now.
I can just appreciate what I've seen with my own eyes, but it was obvious some people's eye's were working right when reading the first post.
If anyone thinks the guy who wrote that blog was paid by Funcom, well they just seen too many James Bond films. Likewise if people think im affiliated with Funcom.
The guild is currently testing the game and they seem to like it but if they don't offer a FFA server pretty much bet everyone will just leave and go to warhammer if it's any good. But like I said they like it so far but not love it. There is still things that need to be ironed out in PVP and maybe will or maybe not.
I'm just tired of getting all jazzed about a game only to be let down so me and the rest of the guild are just sitting along the sidelines not playing anything ATM.
I am going to call a complete and utter BS on this post and the DEV claim. I personally led and attended DAOC raids numbering into 500's and it wasnt pretty lag wise - no game can process spell effects, particles, textures, not mention DX10 atmospheric, light, skin, etc character models where 1000+ players are going for the same spot. Age of Conan at this point is more like Age of Speculation with devs making cool pre-rendered vids and outlandish promisses.
Please link to just one pre-rendered video?
Let me guess. DAoC player hurt because an article claims that AoC has more massive PvP than DAoC?
Not really, just in many of our experiences games that have hundreds of players on the screen at the same time have lagged pretty badly. This includes DAOC, Shadowbane, EVE, WOW (yes, I was in fights of 100's back in the day) and FFXI. Surprisingly L2 always handled fights of 100's but they made some design decisions that explain why it worked so well.
We're just skeptical. This game is reported to require high level hardware just to play the basic game, and we're all waiting to see whether Funcom (who's past reputation is hardly stellar) can really pull it off.
I'll be playing so I'll be sure to let you know.

For you even to ask or say that shows you have not had much experience at all with Funcom.I don't have the time to list the type of company they are lets just say the guy was being VERY kind in just saying funcoms rep is less than stellar.Think and believe what you want I know ppl in beta I have seen them playing the beta and even if you don't wanna hear it this game sucks and will have more angst from gamers than Vanguard did.You don't have to believe me just wait and see.
Also one more point funcom is not going a engine upgrade llike you claimed in your post they are updating some textures thats it they are not doing a entire engine upgrade.

Also one more point funcom is not going a engine upgrade llike you claimed in your post they are updating some textures thats it they are not doing a entire engine upgrade.
Quoted from the Interview with the Dev at Funcom:
"Technically the biggest change will be the optimizations afforded by being able to update to utilize the GPU as the current engine was designed before there really were GPUs to utilize! That will hopefully bring the most benefit to our players. Visually of course the game world will look so much more dynamic as we can use a lot of new features to create the types of effects seen in the teaser video."
To me, that sounds like an engine-upgrade. I never used the word "entire" which would suggest a completely new engine. Read my post.
As for the rest of your post....I'll not go into detailed answers about that. Suffice it to say that you didn't even have the courtesy of answering my questions like others did, no, you just posted the same things the doomsayers have been saying for months now, though I have to admit, some doomsayers at least had some actual -points- in their posts instead just the usual "my friend is in beta and I know it sucks" phrases. *shrugs*
Anyway, on to Kyleran: As i said, I have a couple of friends who have played AO for a while and they liked the game, but well, they could have been biased, so I might not know the whole truth there, granted. However I'd like to clarify one point. AO is not -really- F2P. It has a more or less F2P subscription model, but you'll have to contend with Ad's, if I understand that correctly? Please correct me if I am wrong. Also, even if it is F2P, after 6 years on the market, I would still think that it's been one of the games that stuck around for quite a while. And while it has never been an "epic trendsetter", it has sustained itself for a long time and drawn its audience. I doubt AoC will be an "epic" trendsetter. It won't crack WoW in Subscription numbers, and will probably also be smaller than WAR, but that doesn't mean it'll fail.
Towards the launch, yeah well, can't say anything to that, I only heard the worst. *chuckle* But they recovered in that they still have the game running and obviously with enough players not to shut it down completely. So maybe not a complete, but a partial recovery? Can we agree on that?
Well, first off, you never really recover from a bad launch, EQ 2 is probably the one of the few that's recovered. Second, AO has always been a minor title, sure some folks played it, but it was never an epic trend setter on the MMORPG landscape. Finally, they ended up making some portion of the game F2P, which typically is a sign of "fail" for most fans of the P2P market.
The portion of the game you are talking about represents approximately 15-30 hours of content, its nothing more than a free trial in the end.
P.S. Singsofdeath is correct. The free version of AO is a limited content game with ingame adverts plastered on the walls of the cities and some other areas. Paid version removes the ads and has about 3-4 times the content.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. The problem with doomsayers is that they will cry doom even when a game gets released and does well. Games like LOTRO for example have captured the interest of their target audience and have been fun to play and an asset for the company that runs them. Still, doomsayers will cry murder and failure. I got a revelation for you people, it all comes down to expectations. If you're expecting the second coming, the pinnacle of the MMO creation, the rush from the lost of virginity, then sorry, that came and gone with the games of old. No MMO will make you feel the way your first one did and for the length of time it did, accept it and lets move on.
Oh, some people will definitely won't like the game. That's natural. The problem is that there are more people out there confusing their own dislike with the quality of a game, than rabid fan-boys hyping blindly their game. The most amusing ones are the "I've spent 3 years in WoW, this game sucks" types.
I would advice people to form their own opinions with the information at hand, or at the very list to listen to their closed friends. Even then it's not 100% guarantee that what your friends like, you'll like too. Reading opinions from random Joes hyping or dooming a game usually doesn't give a good picture of the actual state of a game. Add the shills hyping or dooming a game in the picture and you end up with something very distorted.
That been said, I must confess that the work hours are long and the PvP server is open. DOOM indeed!
Games like these with so outdated graphics like UO, EQ1 and AO have managed to keep their subscription base by the merits of their gameplay alone. A game with pre GPU graphics and and with a progression system that is not instantly gratifying has little means to entice fresh people. If you want to attract new people, especially away from the big hits of today, you need to find a way.
Name your own ideas if you think them going F2P on the original game and leaving the 3 expansions for subscribers is an unethical way to attract people.
Edit: To put you under perspective, it's the same as saying "You can play the original WoW 60 levels and contents as long as you like for free, but you need to subscribe to pay for the next 3 expansions in line."
Shadowbane sieges pretty much wrote the book on the subject. Every game is trying to play catch up the massive ammounts of innovation Shadowbane has created. Yeah shadowbane was really the ultimate on city building/sieging. AoC is really just reproducing what's in shadowbane. Shadowbane city/siege/pvp system was really the best one I've seen in any game so far. Other aspects of the game fell appart but these things shadowbane definitely did right. I especially loved how shadowbane added people who killed you to a log book for future reference Revenge is best served cold!

dont developers understand by adding instances its like playing a free fps game? conan is going to be gay the only good thing that might come out of it are the people who play it and want pvp without instances cause they will see how much instanced pvp sucks and crave more pvp and then go play darkfall when its finally released in 2012 just before the world ends.
LOL L2's new advertisement is wonderful..... Take a step back in time and relive the original Lineage II experience as it was in the beginning. Also if you have buidings that aren't bind to the tree, bye bye burned. The assassins in SB are so valuable in seiging you have no idea , please lets keep the topic on AoC before we all see how indepth SB is in Sieging and team effort.
Ok you when are you going to understand??
Please you brought the shadowbane topic into the thread - don't tell me what to do, and I had Played SB for 3 yrs!
I know the difference buddy.
You have no idea, you assume about instances, xbox360, disrespect the game director and generally dont have a clue.

Player Cities /= Battle Keeps.
Just to clarify, Player Cities are what every guild (30 members plus some other requirements) can build. There will be lots and lots of them, thus, instanced.
BattleKeeps will be those fought over. There will only be 8 per server (correct me if that number is wrong), and they will NOT be instanced.
