For example, I could log onto a server and play some BF2 or CSS or UT.... a static little battleground scenario doing capture the flag or rescue hostages, and it's fun, sure. But it gets a little predictable after a while; same old thing over and over.  The only variance is in the strategy used by the two parties. Once you've played through them enough, it starts to get a little boring.
But in an MMO, you got hundreds of people with different motives (be best crafter, level fast, have most money, largest political base, etc). PvP in that scenario makes the world dynamic, unpredictable.
So I enjoy pvp in an MMO because I can:
    - harass that quester, making it hard for him to finish his quest. Providing a dynamic and unpredictable element that requires some other dynamic, unplanned response.
    - protect that other person getting harassed... like a hero swooping in to save the day. Refusing the coin because I have a greater reward in heaven.  lol
    - form and inspire a coo to take over a guild. Or form and run a guild based on a constitution with elections, inspiring the whole server. Or maybe if the mechanics allow, just pulling a Napoleon and taking over the whole place.
    - and probably the most suspenseful and fun, sneaking around in areas too hard for me because of all the evil pvp players out there. You might think I'm crazy with this point, but I actually get more out of the suspense of being the weakest in an area, rather just killing everything else that moves with ease. (probably why the Thief series of games was my favorite as well)

Wow .. i am mightily glad that I dont' have to PvP on my server and I probably never to have to play when u r around.

But if you kept reading and saw the next point, your experience with me might be that I'm the hero swooping down to rescue you in such cases, expecting nothing in return but friendly conversation.

Games are all about the dynamics and what could or could not happen. If you want a static completely-predictable game, you might want to consider tic-tac-toe. The worst that could happen there is maybe a heckler could scream obscenities at you and cause you to make a bad move, and you end up watching that twinkie you bet get eaten by your opponent.... still too risky?

Hmm .. i will never need "rescuing" if the game has no PvP. So the second point is quite moot to me.

That is what you think about games. To me, games are about content. It is about seeing different zones with different mobs having different abilities and drop different items. It is fun to tackle content with friends, and get items, thus MMORPG.

And tic-tac-toe has no content .. so the analogy is not accurate.

You have lots of things to do in RL, but suddenly you have some free time to play your favorite MMO. You can only do one thing with the free time available to you. What is the number one thing you want to do?
Yes, I know some of you will say you like everything, or you like different things on different days, but in this case you can only pick one. If there is something you like to do in an MMORPG that is not listed in the Poll, please post what it is.

This is why people complain about games being grindfests because devs know that Xping is more important than questing.  Devs can make games with no quests and just xping and the xpers would be happy and they can make games with just PVP and the PVPers will be happy, no need for a storyline.  Get XP while PVPing and both might be happy.

I like questing, but only good quests.  not kill 100 of this or get 1000 bones from that.  Most games though don't have the real questing yet.  Hopefully soon.

I like kill x/collect y quests. It gets you into fighting different mobs at different areas. Without those quests, people would just kill the easiest mobs to grind.

There are also exploration quests (get to this point in the map to complete the map) which can be fun.

For me, quests are really not about doing complicated or "real" things. It is about setting an immediate grinding goal that takes you all over the zone. I also like being rewarded by quests (since you know what you are going to get) than random drops.

    Conquest.

It is not strictly about Exploration, PVP, RVR, Questing, or PVE.  I like to conquest.  Explore and dominate new lands.  Discover and ransac player towns and keeps. Encounter the random warrior in the far reaches and engage them in a firnedly duel, or a battle to the death.  Make friends and help them accomplish tasks which create new allies or alliances.  Then settle down in the local tavern with a barmaid on my lap and some ale in my mug before resting and repeating it all the next day.  Conquest is where it is at.

Crap. That's a big one, and I didn't think to ad it to the poll. Thanks for pointing that out.

I don't like PuGing quite as much as organized groups. I don't mind solo grinding, especially if it's to finish a quest. PvP can be very fun, I had a blast in the 40-49 bracket in WoW playing WSG games. I really like exploring the world and seeing everything. But I must say that the most satisfying feeling in any RPG I've played was killing bosses. The more I knew about a boss, the more I wanted to kill it. The cooler a boss is, the better.
What I don't like is farming, getting ganked, and trying to organize PuGs.

That's what makes MMORPGs so fun, and so hard to design. So many people play them for so many different reasons.

My favorite thing to do in an MMORPG is join, or start a PUG, and you put that in your list of least favorite things.

I don't like PuGing because first of all it can take a very long time to organize. Second, the groups have a very high chance of failure because the players haven't played together before.

I agree with your assessment of PUGs 100%. However, what you find frustrating, I find challenging and fun. It's very rewarding to put together a PUG that comes together, and overcomes those difficulties.

Also, there's a certain utilitarian reason, which is I can play when I can play, and not necessarily when certain people are logged on to the game.

Grouping just xping off of monsters. I hate the quest focus of MMORPGs today.
