Now, I'd like to establish my views on Aion. While I am concerned about it becoming an other Asian grindfest, this is the only Asian MMO I'm currently following, and if the gameplay is indeed solid as many people here claim, I will most definitely play the game.
I never liked WoW's art direction that much, yet I played the game for two or so years. I hated the stupid roleplaying 'cliches' in EQ2, yet I played that game for two years. Most games I play to this day have features in them that drive me up the wall. This doesn't mean I don't get a kick out of playing the said games, however. In the end, it is the playability and the overall enjoyment you get from a game that keeps you playing.

Well, all I have to say is wait and try the game out for yourself. All we have right now is assumption, but judging a game that isn't even done yet isn't exactly fair. Nor is it fair to base other things on how this game will turn out, such as labeling it an "asian grinder" because of where it's developed and who's developing it. From what I've read, they're trying to adhere to the western audience in that regard. Will they follow through? Again, we'll just have to wait and see. The point I'm trying to make is that by just turning yourself away from a game without even waiting to play it, you might just turn yourself away from a game you may have ended up sticking with in the long run. Even though I look forward to this game above any other games that have yet to be released such as AoC or WAR, I still plan on trying them out. Who knows, I might just be playing one of those two instead.
So basically , you are the type who generalizes about anyone who looks truly open PvP without handholding rules , good one Yes I think a level 13 should be able to attack a level 12 and a 24 a level 23 and so on - I think handholding rules are abused more than more open ones and people like to use the ganking excuse because they prefer it safe And finally even if there had to be handholding rules for your type they could have gone a different route then a "chaos chicken" - I dont like the idea and think its pretty stupid - and shockingly there are lots of others even still firm fans of the game who hate the idea also Yes I am looking more forward to this game than WAR now , and as someone who has spend lots of money over the decades on Warhammer Fantasy and 40K and is a mmorpg gamer , I dont blindly follow any devs or ideas and can call something stupid even if I love the IP , and as it stands now I find Warhammer being a cheap WoW knock off that wont even have its PvP (and thats pretty bad)
I'd like to same I'm shocked and amazed at this post but I'm really not. Its still an unlogical way to look at what the chicken is for. Its to keep lvl 40s from coming down into a Tier 1 zone whichi s lvl 1 to 10 and basically ganking / griefing / ass whiping noobs which history shows people will do and of course people like the Goon Squad will most definitly do. There's nothing wrong with an open stance on that sort of behavior, since that sort of behavior has in the past been known to deter new players from joining an MMO.
If you want to get down to the meat and potatos of 12 vs a lvl 11 I'm more than sure you can do that Since Tiers are 10 levels wide.
If you want to play another game fine but I still have a right last time I looked to voice some good reasoning behind rules that keep griefers from ruining the game for others.
I think the problem there is your voicing a logical response. That doesn't work with some people.
Open pvp.. my first MMO was Ultima Online. Before Trammel, stat loss or a murder system. The game was fun to me.. kill griefers.. loot their toys etc.
From another point of view. It was just one of the early failed pvp games. I do really believe it would be nice if everyone could find a game they like to play.
Every open pvp game I've played has pretty much been trashed by that "we need to be able to attack newbs" mindset. I pretend its a very small part of the pvp crowd but they sure have an effect on MMO's.
I mean haven't you ever wondered why no one is coming in to take that market? I mean the open pvp market.. Not DAoC where they pushed it off to the side so "pve" wasn't affected that much.
There's a reason that the "open pvp" market isn't that successful.. its pretty much on our end (the players).
The reason logic doesn't work? Everytime those games fail.. its because the "carebears won" or "the devs ruined the game". Its never about... what the players did to kill the population.
But anyway.. good luck to everyone in their search for a game they enjoy.
...nor TCoS or whatever else is coming out. Regardless of what people say about those games, nothing is going to change the fact that 50%-80% of the population can't afford a machine that would run any of those games.
Don't know about the other games, but concerning TCoS that is absolutely not true.

I'm sorry for not doing my homework, please educate me with details.
By denying my statement, are you implying everyone who is interested in playing TCoS is going to run out and buy a new machine to play it? Or does everyone already have a machine that can run it? Since Spellborn uses the older but revamped Unreal Engine 2, I guess it may be possible to see a significant higher player base. Unless this game has the same system requirements as WoW, which I know it won't, you won't be seeing high numbers until much later in the future.

Actually dude, anyone with a 7600GT or better (a 6800 card will work too, lol) will be able to play Aion at decent settings. Can your computer play FarCry? FarCry's old. If it can, then you can run Aion. To play Aion at its highest settings, though, I would recommend a 7900 or 8600 or better card.

Mark, please don't misunderstand. All I'm trying to say is not everyone has a decent graphics card(Or PC for that matter), even though they're dirt cheap(for some people), not everyone is going to go out and buy one if they don't.
I'm sorry if I sound like a total scumbag that doesn't know anything about Aion. I only believe a game's popularity will show it's true colors 1-3 years after when most of the population even considers upgrading to a new machine. Hate to say it but, WoW is good example of this.

I didn't misunderstand you. I know a lot of people out there are running on integrated Intel graphics and playing WoW. All I'm saying is that it's relatively cheap to upgrade to play Aion. Really cheap, actually. Aion may be the best-looking MMO out there, but it's definitely not as graphically intensive as some recent games.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on there. Those new consoles cost around $500, average. To upgrade your graphics card to play Aion only costs around $100. This is about the least power I'd go for, and it's $85: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130062

But their PvPvE is concerning me. I don't think they understand and they just made another PvP game on everyone.
If they understand and the PvE players are happy (which I doubt), then it could be very big... If I like the PvE in this game, I will talk to my friends and try to convince them to join...but...I don't think this will be happening. I am a PvE scout if you want. :P
I am trying this game, I like this setting that much...I am pretty sure their PvP will burn me however. So they can already prepare flame-suits-protectors. :P I don't buy they PvPvE craps 1 moment.

PvP and PvE in this game almost seem COMPLETELY seperate. I don't understand your concern? Because if a game revolves only on PvE isn't that basically a normal RPG w. a story?
But I am coming from Lineage and Lineage 2 so I will feel completely at home in the Abyss where there are mobs that you can hunt as well as people im thrilled about the XP for killing PC's just means i can do what I love and level while doing it.
i found this game like 30mins ago, been watching gameplay videos...and i have to say it looks simply amazing - i was looking forward to mainly guildwars 2 and WAR...but move over war...aion and guild wars2 now
I don't understand why people have an issue with this PvPvE. This simply means that in the Abyss there will be mobs that will attack you as well as the opposing faction. Right?

I'm not sure if you understand the PvPvE portion of Aion. WoW proved that it's not possible to have unrestricted world RvR when a faction is significantly larger than the other and not cause ramifications from the players. PvPvE is NCSoft's answer to this problem by adding mobs that will "Ally" with an under-powered faction, together they will fight the opposing faction. If the larger faction is too over-powering, GMs will control the 3rd faction for added difficulty.
Many people have found the epic castle sieges in Lineage II(even in DAoC) were enjoyable, therefore, The PvP portion in Aion will most likely revolve mainly in castle sieges, with the added flavor of a 3rd faction hindering players.
Those who only enjoy PvE may disregard the PvP portion entirely by avoiding the Abyss and the random enemy portals. It appears PvE plays an enormous part in Aion, PvP is basicly optional.

I don't know if optional really means what it should these days.
EQ/WoW/EQ2/LotRO/DDO/Vanguard devs will argue that Raiding is optional while it isn't. DAoC/EvE/WAR/AoC devs will argue that PvP/RvR is optional.
So I assume you don't mean optional, but merely means that I can avoid it if I accept extreme consequences. Optional bears no downside consequences. Your car for example would not run slower because you didn't take A/C, nor cost twice the price, nor be an oil-eater if you opt out. Optional is widely overused by MMOs devs who have no idea what this word means. Having a Ferrari, a Porchse or a Lada has a final car is not optional, this is far more than an option, it is a dire consequence to the budget I was willing to invest. Having A/C in the car is optional and has no bearing on the car performances.
Will I be weaker in PvE if I don't go in the PvPvE zone? If so, then PvP is enforced, not optional. (and the devs should ready their flaming-suit right now, cause I will flame them when I experience PvP enforcement).
EDIT: Nice explanation about the PvP system...however I can't care less. I play PvE. So I won't be in the PvP zone, no matter if you call it PvPvE. And if I suffer from this decision in PvE, then, I won't play long, I will tells my friends to avoid the game, and flame the devs. :P

Couldn't agree more with last poster tbh. I play MMORPGS because of the PvE content, it might have some pvp content, and i might appreciate it maybe later, however my main desire in a new mmorpg is just one, play pve with my friends, avoid pvp frustation at all costs (and i play atm in a wow pvp server).
I really liked what aion has to offer, it seems a marvelous game, i just hope u aren't ENFORCED to do any pvp. i mean eventually i will like to make it, but whenever i want, i just hope im not questing, and couple of similar levels decided to spend the afternoon killing me (really hope that isnt possible).
As for the pc specs convo.. man .. Aion is allready very low spec friendly, i mean whoever doesnt have a pc to play farcry 1? should all gamers with minimal decent pc's be penalized because some dont want to upgrade pc? it's really cheap nowdays to buy a cheap cpu/memorys/graphics, more cheap than buying some consoles in the market.
But i'm not gonna hide.. i cant wait more for aion, me and my mates desire the game so much.. i just hope it isn't another fluke like Lotro or Hellgate: London.
this game looks like too pvp centric for you two guys, there will be a point where you'll have to pvp in order to accomplish everything in Aion, you'll do fine with your pve, but you won't access to the best raids, you will miss sieges and siege weapons, you won't have access to draconian and abyssal gear.
You will probably have a chance to go and reach level 50 without engaging pvp (unless portals open in front of you or unless the opposite race organices next to a portal causing havoc for a pair of hours in your lands) but if you want everything without pvping, you'd be better looking for another game.
"The visual style is undeniably generic Asian 'Manganesque', just look at the screenshots. Well endowed women with huge eyes, with lean male characters that look like androgynous male models. This I do not find appealing at all. Then again, I never liked Manga or Anime either, like I stated before this is a matter of opinion." I see your point and totally respect it, like you said it's a matter of opinion about the visual style and this has nothing to do with the gameplay. Originally posted by Hrothmund
I've viewed this before, and my opinion still stands. This nothing but PR, a ten minute video will not convince me of how the eventual gameplay will be like.
This isn't PR, video like that are upload by korean beta testers because there isn't strict NDA.
honestly i wouldn't sweat it, some people like to make assumptions. Even ignoring the good things that are presented in front of them. Not many games have enough content to last you throughout the entire length of a characters level max. And this is one that will have such content. It has been shown by the Devs themselves and even in this video it shows how well done they are, even having Cutscenes and voice overs. Something a large majority of mmos do NOT have. Even WoW (which was based on a single/multiplayer strategy game that had tons of cutscenes which is iconic of Blizzard) does not have any of. why is this? Oh that's right, that team left to make Guild Wars which has tons of nice story content and cutscenes.
To each is their own, and those that don't play this game will probably be missing out on a great game. Personally I love the far-eastern art style, it is so much better artistically, than most cliche western styles. plus this game has both a light side and dark side. Which of course I really dig the dark gothic feel to the dark side of aion. This game is not the cliche asian grinder. But of course who cares, I'm going to enjoy the game when it comes out
Just to clear something up here Aion is NOT being developed by NCsoft it is infact just being published by NCsoft in US/EU markets. so all of these "oooh but it's being developed by NCsoft therefor it's going to suck" kind of attitude doesn't actually hold water.

This is about the least power I'd go for, and it's $85: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130062

i meant games like crysis... new high end games.
Let's stick to talking about Aion.

I like this setting a LOT.

Because if a game revolves only on PvE isn't that basically a normal RPG w. a story?
But I am coming from Lineage and Lineage 2 so I will feel completely at home in the Abyss where there are mobs that you can hunt as well as people im thrilled about the XP for killing PC's just means i can do what I love and level while doing it.
i found this game like 30mins ago, been watching gameplay videos...and i have to say it looks simply amazing - i was looking forward to mainly guildwars 2 and WAR...but move over war...aion and guild wars2 now
lets

Katzu
this game looks like too pvp centric for you two guys, there will be a point where you'll have to pvp in order to accomplish everything in Aion, you'll do fine with your pve, but you won't access to the best raids, you will miss sieges and siege weapons, you won't have access to draconian and abyssal gear.
You will probably have a chance to go and reach level 50 without engaging pvp (unless portals open in front of you or unless the opposite race organices next to a portal causing havoc for a pair of hours in your lands) but if you want everything without pvping, you'd be better looking for another game.
EDIT: Found it, www.youtube.com/watch
I've viewed this before, and my opinion still stands. This nothing but PR, a ten minute video will not convince me of how the eventual gameplay will be like.
This isn't PR, video like that are upload by korean beta testers because there isn't strict NDA.
