I am thinking of picking up an MMORPG again. I had played FFXI for about 4 years, but I want to look into some other options this time around. However, for me, a main concern is the ability to keep the SAME character, but be able to change your class/job at any time, as is the case in FFXI. I really begin to associate myself with my character so I want to be able to play the same character for my entire career in a game. Are there any other MMORPGs out there, or that are coming out soon, that have this same feature? Also, I did like the moderate, but not completely heavy, amount of grinding in FFXI. So, anything with a comparable level would also be great. But, the same character job/class change option is the most important thing to me. Thanks guys.

Just bumping in hopes of getting a response. Thanks guys.
i couldent find a game like ff11....its pretty unike....i think your best sticking to ff for another 2-3 moths till aion, aoc , tcos and war come out
or you could give eve a try...you might like that
I'm trying the EVE free trial right now and I do like it. It's very gorgeous looking. But, my problem is that I'm on my second day now and I'm starting to feel kind of lost and even slightly bored. Now, I know this is more of a sandbox game, and that's fine. But, I would like to be able to find some kind of story and possibly a way to connect with other players. I don't need someone to hold my hand every step, but it would be nice to have a small amount of direction.
As for your response about FFXI, it does seem like no other games out there seem to have that same option, which is funny to me because it seems such a central thing. Anyway, that's why I was asking here if anyone else knew about any other games like that. I mean, I still love FFXI, but I kind of wanted to play something new. You know? I've been playing FFXI off and on since it was officially released state-side in Oct '03.
You can also take a look at Wurm online as another sandbox game. But for what you ask for complete customization of skills so you can keep your char, you can do that all you want in Wurm, as there is no real cap on how many skills you can have, it just makes it hard becuase not only is skilling pretty hard, but you also lose .25 of a point each death, so having alot of skills that you dont use all the time will suffer when you die.
Good luck to ya, Its hard these days looking for a good game, as too many of them are exactly the same game with different names. But luckly new concept games are indevelopment, and few already developed.

I second Wurm Online. It may not be the game for you, but if you want, message me in the game if you see me on. I'm "Mik" in-game.

After spending the last week researching I'm going to just go back to FFXI until SE releases their mysterious next-gen MMORPG. From what I can guess, I'm thinking that it will probably be out at the end of 08, probably around december with all of their FFXIII games if they stay on schedule. So, looks like another year of FFXI for me. Thanks for all your input guys. See you again in the online world.
