Here's an article about a guy who's developing an MMO by himself. The images and ideas look really interesting. And the painterly graphics style seems to lend itself well to a small team or solo project, instead of having a team of 10 artists who do nothing but render the perfect toilet brush and 1,000 versions of bread mold... Without a huge payroll and investors to juggle, seems real vision can come through.

It looks interesting and worth checking out. However, I doubt that a procedurally generated universe can hold my interests for long .. but hey .. let's check it out first.

this is very intresting...i wish him all the best...really....i was thinking of doint the same thing..
it's possible to happen. but just designing the database could take a week and they're still be problems that need to be ironed out.
this thing is a looooooooonnnnnnnnngggggggggg way out if he has any intention of doing it right.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
It's proof in the pudding that there are good designers out there that grasp multiple disciplines (even in CS itself), and can utilize them to produce a product. Designing a DB is actually easy, Paul, the problem is managing it as to prevent corruption of the data.

Its always great to see that entrepreneurial spirit. I'm sure a lot of us have said it if not thought it when we see people complaining about games, if you don't like what's out there or you think you can do better than make your own game.

Heck, I wouldn't mind him just releasing the procedurally generated part on its own.. That would be enough of an accomplishment..
Hail DnDOnlinegames!
you just need to mention MMOFPS+townbuilding+PvP. and you have 20% of people mesmerized by the thought of your game

Well, I really like the concept but i wonder if he can make all those promises come true. I was also wondering if those shots in the article are in-game shots or concept drawings? Looks terrific! but i am not going to start praising the game until i see shots or trailers or even better a beta/demo of the stuff he mentioned in the article.
Banzai!
For me, it's the fact that the core technologies related to the real time pipe-lining of 3d applications over the network is what has my attention. This sort of technology is to become the backbone for a real Metaverse. And the fact that he figured a way to also reproduce colour correction with that pipe-line (CLUT), pretty much makes this a practical application even outside of MMOs. I'm considering presenting the technology to my university's Internet2 liaison, to see if anyone else is interested in hacking on this stuff to see what else we can do with it (tele-education especially in the fields of medicine and engineering).
Very cool
I've considered doing the same thing, but man the learning curve to make even a small basic design for demonstration is huge. I have so much to learn lol. I have a good idea of gameplay concepts, and have played around a bit with the world builders, but I have no idea how to implement item databases, make mobs come to life, etc. Should be fun to learn, but certainly not easy to do it right. Of course, if I could present a model to investors and get funds, I'd immediately go out and get experienced developers. :P
