Can Diablo provide a new type of MMO?

Hey guys.
We know that Blizzard is developing a new MMO at this time. Not being speculative but supose its to do with their Diablo franchise. Will it fill the void in today's market where people want something New and Fresh in terms of gameplay. I havent really given it much thought of what the *new* gameplay is going to be, but does diablo's history open a door to fill that nieche ? It might be all pvp based with a whole new rewards system, pvp quests, Heaven vs Hell, housing / items control(catapults,trebuches), etc. Or something completely NEW. Something we didnt even think of ourselves.
There are a lot of Diablo fans out there, and everyone would try the game regardless of its type MMO or another Diblo 2 type of game. Knowing Blizzard and their keen sense of adventurism and innovation will they be able to pull off another WoW type of a market Nuke ?

The Diablo IP is by FAR my favourite IP of all Blizzard worlds. Its is unarguably the most orignal thing Blizzard has done to date in regards to setting.
I think it would make a great mmo, however If I were them I would look to see how AoC does before deciding which ip to go with for a new mmo.
Remember both Diablo games were M rated and to do the IP justice the mmo would need to be too. I think Blizzard, after the run away success of there warcraft mmo may be loath to try the adult market before it has been tested by anoher dev team.
Blizzard never invents, they take an existing concept and make it polished, easy to access and most of all fun.
most of those responsible for the Diablo series are no longer with Blizzard and have formed Flagship studios.
They released Hellgate: London and Mythos is still in Beta atm. If your looking for a next gen diablo fix then you are probably going to look to one of the following to get it.
I think he was talking about the franchise as an MMO not an actual Diablo game, blizzard still holds the rights to the ip and has access to many talented story writers.

I really don't think Blizzard would make two fantasy MMO's back to back. I think their next mmo will either be Starcraft online or a new idea. Plus Starcraft 2 is coming out and this could be a good runway to a Starcraft MMO. Like when Blizzard brought out Warcraft 3 in 2002, they were most likely making WoW at that time and Warcraft 3 lead to WoW. I think one reason they made Warcraft 3 is to put Warcraft back in the people minds because they were making WoW and I think this could be the same with Starcraft. I hate to be a downer for all the Diablo fans, but I REALLY doubt that their making a Diablo MMO at this time. Maybe in a few years, but not I doubt it.
I was also thinking NCsoft had Dungeon Runners and Flagship has Mythos, both of which are similar to Diablo. I would think Blizzard would want to make something different, something that would stand out instead of just making third game like this.
I agree to some extent but there is no problem with making back to back fantasy games especialy when the genre is the most popular.
The starcraft IP would also be up against some other similar set ips as there is alot of sci-fi mmos coming in the next 3 years the most obvious of which is the ever popular warhammer 40k one.
A Diablo MMO would definitely be a massive hit. I'd say 80%+ of the people that where waiting for HG:L where x D2 or current D2 players judging from the forums during beta and at release. So there's obviously a HUGE market for a Diablo MMO. I don't want to say it could match WoW numbers but I think it'd easily be #2 MMO as far as subs go.
The fact that the Diablo crew is no longer with Blizzard is really a non-issue. Blizzard still owns the rights to Diablo and a good team could do just as well as the original team.
I know I'd be first in line to pick up a copy. I would just hope they kept the same atmosphere and classes with similiar skills to D2, of course with a load of new and fresh Ideas. Of course it'd have to be fully 3D like the rest of the MMO's. I wouldn't be interested in the ol' birds eye view thing for an MMO.
Any MMO with a Blizzard logo on it will most likely be a hit at this point, as long as they don't mess up to bad.
Yes but also I asked a few of my friends kids if they ever heard of Diablo and few of them had. When I mentioned Starcraft most of them said yes because they saw videos of Starcraft 2...only a couple played Starcraft 1 and that was only because they wanted to play it before Starcraft 2 came out. Diablo has a cult following that play Diablo 2 but thats not enough, they need the kids to play it and want to buy it. The best way to do this is to make another version of the single player game like they did with Warcraft before WoW and like I think their doing with Starcraft now. I think if Blizzard were to come out with a Diablo online they would do something to get the kids interest in the game and not just hope the people who still play Diablo 2 will buy into it.
One of the greatest rpgs of all time. If Blizzard people was to make it a mmo I think people would flock to the game just like WOW. The character classes would fit perfectly for a mmo. It would be just as popular as WOW is today with Blizzard's marketing expertise.
You know somthing I have noticed this very same thing. Diablo and Starcraft are now getting on a bit and the young gamers of today have bearly even heard of them. The sooner Activision Blizzard start releasing some titles based on these ips the better.
I guess the Diablo fans just have to hope that with it being such a unique horror/fantasy blend that it has a chance at being a mmo at some point.
A Diablo mmo would be a hit, period! It was a very fun and addictive game. And many people would play it for sure, no doubt in my mind. I would love to see that title come to fruition as mmo. It could be the only true WoW killer.
If it was made like mythos,an online co-op action rpg rather than another WoW style game,then yes. A proper online Diablo game,where you see others in the wilderness and can fight them would be great.
Diablo 2s getting on in years now and looks ancient,Id love to see the series rejuvinated. Perhaps a hellgate style 3rd person style instead of the isometric view,with spell aiming and projectile dodging.
I wonder if I still have my D2/LoD discs. This thread is making me want to give 'er a whirl again, just for old-time's sake.
