I think there should be some type of auction house. In Asheron's Call 2 that is the only thing I feel is missing from the game. It slightly makes up for it with the trade channel, but then you have to be on at the same time as the guy that is selling the thing you are looking for. Having an NPC would great easy and better IMO.

I heard that they plan to link for reason #3 since they have been discussing that on the forums already people only use the ones in the big city. I almost would guarntee that they would link them so there wouldn't be tons of lag in the main cities (i wonder how raids will do that ).
"With this first implementation of the Auction House system a deposit fee was implemented based on a percentage of the amount of money that a vendor would buy the item for. The deposit fee increases as the seller increases the amount of time that the item will be up for auction.
The current fees are subject to change as the team gathers player feedback both here on the forums and from players using /suggest in the game.
There are several known bugs currently associated with the Auction House and the QA team continues to test for more as they are reported. The goal is to have these bugs ironed out as soon as possible.
Keep your feedbacks coming; it is invaluable as we continue testing! "
Please take note of the first paragraph. Sure things will prolly change, but that paragraph alone turns me away from auctions if I loose money.
If everyone congregates at a main auction house and the others are not linked, then they are of little use. Why put stuff up for auction in a place hardly anyone uses? You will end up loosing more money than you make. It was like this in EQ before they implemented the Bizzarr. People picked a area to buy/sell in.
Sure you dont have to stand there while your items sell, but what if your looking for items? You most certainly have to stand there, and lets face it, even lag can make it hard to search in a window at times. What about those that walk by that auction house with a few hundred people looking to buy something? Having them linked would alieviate that problem.
"Don't want to pay the deposit fee to set your item up for auction? (which you get back later) then just use the trade channel."
Assuiming your trade sells. If it dont sell your out your deposite.

Omol, I can't believe you, "I don't want to lose money." First off it's a game, and i am sure that if you are trying to sell a good item you will have a moderate amount of money, it won't require a ridiculouse amount of money, once again. This is so noobs don't spam it with cheap stuff, as they would if there wasn't a fee. You will almost always sell you item, provided it's good and has a good price. Anyways, it's a hell of a lot better than selling to the merchants, and think about it, even if you do not sell it, you can just put it back in or use the trade channel. Add on the money you spent using the auction system to make up for it, again the fee makes it more "realistic" because in actual LIFE people do not just make a sytem you sell in for free without ANY Fee's. Take E-Bay for example.
Jubbincake brings up a good point, it's JUST like ebay.
Also Omol, maybe you didn't read my post very well. Because basicaly I said the same things you did, in supporting why they should be linked.
So I think the only thing we're on a dissagreement on here is the deposit fee. It doesn't bother me, but if it bothers you, like I said in my post, infact the EXACT thing you quoted me on "Just use the trade channel". You don't HAVE to use the auction house. Go to that main city where all those people buying and selling are, and just spam your WTS on the trade channel. What my whole point about "I don't see anything BAD about them" was in regards to just that, I don't see how them being there effects people who choose not to use them.
PS, thank you for finding me that quote about the deposit fees, I trust you enough not to have to click the link. The auction houses aren't something I really care too much about overal, since I've never been big on trading-selling. I usualy just get what what I need from within the guild, and what I have to sell, and anything worth selling, I usualy just give to guildmates.

Your right, Why waste time getting money in the first place only to have that odd chance that you can loose it? I am sure I wont use the auction houses if it stays this way and I am sure there are other people just like me that feel the same way.
Your right it is a game, and my idea of fun is not (read this again if you dont understand that everyone plays differently) to loose money that I work for. Is that hard to understand?
I am not complaining about needing to pay a fee if the item sells, so dont know where you got that idea from, but I should not have to pay money for a service that was not accomplished.
If they want money sinks in the game so bad, I am sure they could find other ways of doing it other than ripping someone off.
You can disagree or agree with me all you want, it makes no difference. You have your opinion and I have mine. You do not play my characters, you are not me and you prolly dont feel how I do when I play on my time. Tho maybe you should read what some of the testers have been saying, then you prolly would get it in your mind the same thing the some of the testers are going thru. Currently it is not cheap to sell items, specially if you dont have alot to begin with. Not everyone makes butt loads of money in game.

I agree that the auction houses should be all linked (like they were in SWG), and I see no reason why they wont do that before retail.
I also believe that auction houses will be Primarily used to sell the best/rarest items with some average items in the mix, and that everything else will be sold directly between players. If you are not reasonably sure that the item will sell, dont put it up for auction. As other players have stated, its exactly the same as ebay. Dont put junk up for sale if you cant afford the fees.
id rather see vendors like in UO/EQ. you rent a vendor for a set period of time, could even change the "rent" based on the renters lv or the amount of space you wanted the vendor to have.then pick a spot where all vendors would go, like EQs bazaar, but have auction npcs scattered in the citys that would link you to this central selling spot.
do not have bids, but set prices.you could even have the vendor send you the item(cod or whatever+ shipping charges) if you didnt feel like making the trek to the auction house.this way you would look for certain vendors after awhile, "want to buy leather? well soandsos vendor has awsome deals and lotsa stuff, plus he pays for shipping!"i know in EQ there were certain peoples vendors i always checked because i had heard of them or gotten good deals from the before. everytime i went in i brought up the search list and checked their guys first then the other items.
id rather have a vendor as a craftsman than auction.its not worth trying to sell some things that may never get sold. with a vendor tho i could rent him for a week then put newbie gear on him, it would give me a chance to sell the items and work my skill along with suppling newbies with cheap(compared to npc) gear that they could actually use. i could keep the vendor and when people no longer became newbs they would hopefully still look for my vendor for their leather needs.if i didnt pay the vendors wages he would ship all my items back to me and i would have to pay the shipping for them or lose them.
