The Bartle Test and Real Life

I started thinking about this yesterday and was immediately interested in how the Bartle test might compare to RL. Many of us have distinct playstyles, game choices, etc...my assumption is that the Bartle Test will lend itself to a very good outline of what careers ppl are in also.

What I would like is for ppl to go to this link http://www.guildcafe.com/zQuest.php , take the test. (It is like 30-35 question). Copy your results and come back here and post them with the following information:

  • I doubt you will see much correlation between careers and bartle tests since people will use different approaches to accomplish the same task.  Some people are approach science as an exploration, some will appraoch is as achievement or a social thing.  Same thing with sales for some its competition, for some its purely social, for some its a way to explore the state of the world, for others its just plain cutthroat.  Each one will give insight into the world of sale or marketing or whatever.

Probably you would see a good correlation between how they do their job and bartle.

Oh believe me I do not expect it to be all inclussive.

But I do expect it to to create some interesting trend-lines. And I would venture to say that a higher percentage of ppl in certain career fields will tend to have similiar Bartle Test scores. Of course this is just a hypothesis, but I need data to prove it.

Regardless, the info gathered will be interesting nonetheless....

SAEK players enjoy socializing more than anything else, but they also like to achieve the goals within the game. Often, the increase in social status that comes with defeating a powerful foe or finding a unique treasure is more important than the achievement itself. They also enjoy being part of a team that tries to accomplish great deeds, often finding as much satisfaction in the success of the group as with oneself.

EKSA players might be descibed as living by slogan: see the world, meet interesting people...and kill them. Immersion within the world is important to these players, because they love finding new things to explore--but they also enjoy the thrill of the hunt and finding other players within the world to fight.

AEKS players are interested in the player-versus-environment aspect of the game more than anything else. They are often soloists who want to achieve and see what the world has to offer. Often, they find groups cumbersome and PVP to be more an annoyance than a feature.

I don't think this would correlate but...here it is...

    AKES

AKES players like to be the best-of-the-best at everything the game has to offer. They like to be high on the ladders of whatever metrics the game uses, including PVP. They like the best gear, the most power, and they love being the 'first' at something. Their prowess in PVP is generally supported by a large degree of understanding and posession of the best equipment and skills.

    Breakdown: Achiever 100.00%, Explorer 33.33%, Killer 40.00%, Socializer 26.67%

I absolutely hate PvP with consequences...and I kinda feel I should receive higher in socialising points than killer or explorer...but what the heck.  Maybe I answer fast.  Dunno.

    SKAE

SKAE players enjoy teamwork and cooperation, but feel that the main challenges of a virtual world come from the other players rather than the environment. They enjoy forming groups and alliances that will pit themselves against other players--and they gain the most satisfaction when they defeat organized groups of other players. When they aren't playing against other players, they enjoy all of the social aspects of the game.

PvP doesn't have to involve combat in the traditional sense - only competition with other players, and can be as simple as playing the auction house as a competitive endeavor, or just wanting to be "better" at whatever it is you choose to do. Killer just indicates generally that you consider other players to be opponents to be met and defeated on *some* playing field, as opposed to considering them to be social buddies/friends to be made (Socializer), or resources to be drawn on cooperatively to achieve larger goals (Achiever)

I used to score SEAK when I was more of a roleplayer. I've since come to the conclusion that there are a LOT of really BAD roleplayers out there, and by and large it's a huge waste of my time to try. =)

Imagine my surprise (NOT!) when, this time around, i scored as an EASK.

Fairly accurate results but I'd say Achiever and Socializer should be higher.   Afterall, I enjoy completing all I can ingame, atleast once.  Although I solo a lot, it's not like my ingame chat isn't fingers tripping over the keyboard at times or that I don't contribute as much(sometimes more than) others in guild/kin by coin, gear, time helping out others.  Then theres the AH's, crafting, loot buying/selling which contributes to the server populace as a whole and helps me out at the same time.

SEAK players are usually very interested in the the 'total experience' of a virtual world--meeting other people and finding the unique places within it. They don't care much for PVP or levelling, but meeting up with online friends to see new parts of the world is usually fun and exciting.

The biggest problem I had with the test is that most of the questions had no good answer.  I didn't want to do either of them and had to pick at random.

    For example, question 24:

On an MMORPG, would you rather:

Be the most feared person in the game

Have a sword twice as powerful as any other in the game

I don't want to do either.  I'd be happier being the most respected person in the game, I couldn't care less about being feared or having a powerful weapon.

I agree i could be a intresting test, but sorry i couln't indentify myself in many of the answers i had to choose from.

I could answer the first question about what i like more out of a mmorpg and thats exploring.

The second question i already could not answer as i don't feel the need to brag about anything in this genre. The same goes for the 3rd and 4th, 5th questions as i don't fit in the answers that are given. So sorry the poll doesn't fit me personaly as i seem to look for totaly different things in these games

Overall the questions/asnwers seem far to limited to me so the results i never have gotten as i bailed out at question nr 8 which still i did not fit it's answers i had to choose from. Overall i felt i was more answering questions towards online shooters then i personaly feel it fits mmorpg tbh and again in my own personal opinion.

    KASE

KASE players tends to enjoy the PVP aspect most of all, but also likes to pit themself against all the challenges of the PVE environment as well--although the latter is often a means to an end. This type of player will often enjoy PVP that focuses on their skill as an individual contributor (duels, and so forth) more than team-based PVP.

Caveat:  I don't put much stock in tests like Bartle or Meyers Briggs.  I find the questions to be far too simplistic and I tend to answer them with other motives in mind than the ones they are trying to illicit.  For example asking someone if they want 2 levels or an item to damage players is a crappy question because two levels helps to kill players too.  It predicts nothing.
