almost any browser based 'MMO'.   this isn't talking about junk like runescape.   this refers to stuff like empire building games, there really is a large selection to choose from that have gameplay from 10% PvP to 90%(there's also newage stuff like torn city that are character instead of empire).

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I think Warhammer Online fits with that discription. WAR supose to have a very well balance between PvE and PvP (or RvR). You can play the entire game by just doing PvE or PvP so there are always things to do for everyone. If you want to get to know this game better, I would recommend you to read this unofficial FAQ on WarhammerAlliance.com.

WoW. Roll an undead rogue, get to lvl 30, go to Stranglethorn Vale and hang out around Nesingway's camp with the dozen other undead ganking rogues.

Except WAR is heavily anti Ganking.   Ganking does not equal real PvP.     PvE & Ganking don't usually go well together.

Characters that are higher lvl than the max level requirement for a Tier (as in someone whos' say a Tier 3 toon) can not go into the Tier 2 or Lower RvR or enemy PvE areas.   If they do they shall be immediately turned into Chaos Chickens.  There for they can not Gank.   You can not be killed in PvE zones unless an enemy player comes into your PvE area (yes they are split apart by Faction) and you Flag yourself for PvP on purpose.   There fore once again you can not gank.

Ganking is to grief, harrass, ambush unsuspecting often lower level or lower skilled players that present no true challenge.

Besides RvR games are built as GROUP PvP ... kinda hard to solo / gank a group of people.

I don't know much about this game yet, but from what I have seen is that the PvP is pretty hardcore in AoC. Good suggestion!

    6 players taking on 3 = ganking

    12 players taking on 6 = ganking

    20 players taking on 12 = ganking...

    And so on.

RvR, is at the base, a ganking paradise.  You see someone from the other side, you attacks, no matter how fair/unfair it is.  He could have a better group/more peoples with him.  95% of the fights happening in a RvR setting are ganking.

The best rewards are given when you RAZE an enemy capital city...they are given while you GANK!  The game is rewarding, ganking, and enforcing it with better rewards.  Now, because you gank you are stronger and can gank even better.

Bah, if you want real ganking first you need full looting. Then you need to sodomize your fellow players when they are absolutely helpless - respawning at a lifestone, or newbs just entering the world for the first time etc.. These are the only kinds of experiences that will allow the ganker to fully realize the true measure of his manhood.

But sorry Raystanz, I can't think of any MMORPG that specifically features or encourages this type of action. Perhaps you could just play solitaire and cheat?

AOC PVP server will suit you to a tee. Who ever said warhammer is way off, thats very anti gank type of game with the zones implemented, its more of a "try to gank and run lout of the zone" fest

See I dont view that as ganking, thats PvP.  Ganking imo and lots of others is  a max level player attacking a beginner.  That is ganking to me, just outnumbering the other side is not ganking, its when the other side has absolutely no chance in not only winning but even fighting back.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

I believe he is referring to zerging.  It's not ganking, but you could say it's another form of the same idea.

Ganking and zerging have in common one thing: utilizing an unfair* advantage (numbers or level) to score points/honor/cities/keeps/etc.  Beyond that, they're different.  Many games discourage ganking, but few discourage zerging, as that could possibly discourage getting more people to PvP and consequently play their game, which is bad for business.

*Some may think these are not unfair advantages.  I use the word for sake of providing a definition only.

WARhammer Online and Mythic have been focusing heavily on preventing this game from having a "Gank/Grief" factor. They have taken out stealth, added scenarios, got rid of high level vs low lvl ganking, frowned upon root/mez/sleep and anything that renders your character completely useless for whatever reasons throughout the fight.

What you are explaining as ganking is simply how things work in an open RvR setting.

Lets say (in DAoC) Albion is sieging a Midguardian keep, and there are 40 Mids and 64 Albs.

The Mids are easily winning the battle from the keep walls and keeping the enemy at bay, but thier numbers keep being replinished due to the amount of players returning slowly from the Albion Keep.

In order to stop this there is a great solution, and the Mids make good use of this idea. So now 16 of the defending Midguardians hop over the back wall and run away from the fight, heading in the direction of the Albion Keep or behind the Albs position. The Mids see small groups of 2 and 3 Albs running back to the siege to aid thier friends. The Mids quickly move in the take out the various groups of Albs (no thought of being gankers) and cut of the supply of reinforcements to the main Albanian force. The siege force begins to feel the effects of decreasing numbers and the Mids notice this. The remaining 24 defenders storm out of the keep and run down the 10 to 20 Albs. The defenders are now victorious and the attackers crushed.

So given that you did not explain the circumstances of combat in your examples, this is ganking?

Just because you outnumber your enemy does not mean you are zerging.  So you are in a group of 10 and run into a group of 5, what are you supposed to do?  Apologize for being a bigger group and ask 5 of your party members to stay out of the fight?  Thats just stupid, zerging is when a mass anywhere from 2 people +, just mindlessly attack, die, respawn, attack, die, respawn, etc.....   However if you are in a bigger group than your opponent but you still use tactics other than just bum rushing them then thats not zerging, its just luck you were rolling in a bigger group.

Ganking is when the other player has NO chance of not just winning the fight, but even fighting back in any meaningful way.  Its a level 60 1 shotting a bunch of level 10s, the level 10s have no way to win the fight, even if the 60 is naked and not fighting back.  Where as just because your outnumbered doesnt mean you automatically lose, if your not too far outnumbered and you use good tactics and strategy you can still pull off a miracle.

Some of my more memorable fights were against impossible odds, such as when me(priest) and a mage were guarding the mine in AB against 6, 7, and then 10 horde.  They finally killed us and took the mine when they zerged 10 of them at us, and even then we managed to kill 8 of them.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Any fight which isn't fair and favorising 1 side is ganking.

RvR is ganking by definition, you attack someone not based on challenge and difficulty, but on the fact they are the other side.

DAoC is a massive gankfeast.  So is EvE.  95% of the battles are ganking.

For a fight to be considering as not ganking, it must be unclear which side will win.  And if there is a rematch, it must be unclear which side will win the rematch.  To be not ganking, you find a group of 3, you send 3 peoples in your group, at RANDOMN and watch, never helping them.  In RvR, you will help your teamates and crush these 3 fools.  This is ganking.

Lineage 2 = I will never play a game where I have to click to move.

EvE = Space is not my final frontier

WAR and AOC = while both possibly good suggestions.. neither of them are playable today are they? (not sure why people rec. something thats not out, would rather get suggestions on games that of this very moment I can buy or DL right now and play.)

a note on AOC.. anyone else not think about the fact that none of NCsofts other games have been huge smashes, like EQ or WoW? they've remained pretty small.. I doubt AOC is any different. You don't automatically become master game makers over night.

WAR will be good, but I just feel like its gonna be lag city.

Vanguard used to be very ganking-friendly.   There was some level protections, but once other guy is on your range, you could do "things".

My favorite spell whas "Sleep".  Sleep + PvE or  Sleep + Water is a ganking dream.

Today, seems most RvR servers are off, so no ganking for you  :D

     - -

LOTRO PvPM.  The default gameplay is 4 creeps  to kill 1 freep ... by design. It don't feel like ganking, but is always  Number vs Quality.
