players that are going to switch over

So I love plying mmo's But iI hate the fact that a new game comes out and then everyone leaves to go play that one.  Don't get me wrong I love the new ones that are coming out but I don't think I want to go to a different one yet.  Everyone that I talk to gives mixed reviews about AOC.  The thing I am woundering is how powerfull is AOC going to be I mean will ppl leave EQ2 and wow to go play this game.  I mean am I going to log on to a game one day and there will not be anyone on.  Will I be forced to switch even though I might like a game that I am already playing.

I mean I do have a copy waiting for me of AOC but I just started playing EQ2 and I really like the game.  I don't even Know if I want to switch now.  My ? of the matter is is How many are expected to switch and how many expect this game to be  a flop.  I would love to know what to expect?

I'm playing eq2 and Vanguard.  I'm planning to play AoC for at least a month when it is released.  beyond the first month it will depend on how the game plays.  If it is good I'll probably stop playing eq2.  If it is super good I'll stop playing vanguard also :)

I don't think you can really say.  It all depends on how the game plays and if it gives all the people who come and try it what they are looking for.  It also depends on it's staying power.  People might like it or they might just try it, get their fix and just leave.

I guess you'll have to wait till the release.  I suggest you wait a month or 2 after release and see what they people are saying.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Hmm your kinda speculating on other players speculation.

Honestly no one knows how much of a pull AoC will have on other MMO's but if you have played other MMO's when WoW was released you will see a slight exodus with AoC's release. Will that be on the scale that DAoC, EQ and AO suffered with the release of WoW ?

    I doubt it.

Fact of the matter is, there will always be a core population of players, its just a matter of weather that core group is large enough to keep the MMO playing.

I am playing EQ2 since 2005. I have almost 180 played days on four alts. 75 days on my main only. I left for vanguard and LotRo. 12 weeks for vanguard and 7 weeks for LotRo. I have seen many changes in EQ2. Many veterans left. While it is sometimes very hard to find a group for content outside of mainstream the game has almost endless content. Someone posted on another forums that EQ2 is a content monster. Its true, i havent seen all of it yet ;)

I ll give AoC a try. One months or two months. Doesnt matter, i just need to see what the game is offering in the long run. If it cant give me what i want from a mmorpg ill go back to EQ2. I like vanguard and i like LotRo, but they cant deliver. Its like mmo for weight watchers :P LotRo's content was sitting on my butt with the LFG flag up forever and vanguard's content was the same or grinding crafting until my eys started to bleed. I guess i am spoiled contentwise. However, a new AAA game has not only to beat toher games in graphics or mechanics, but also in content.

What to expect ? Well, i have seen many leave EQ2 for toher games and i have seen many come back. I wouldnt worry at all. Play whatever makes you happy.

I understand the sentiment being expressed here, but surely thats really unfair? You cannot compare a box fresh MMORPG content-wise with one thats had years to build it up surely?

I started EQ2 on launch day, and, tbh, the level of open day content was a lot less then what AoC seems to be offering...

Looking at your examples though, it seems that your problems were actually game design issues rather then content? LotR encouraged way to much solo casual play from day 1 (terrible in building up a community or when it comes to gettin a group), and VG had boring grinding in various forms (again, usually forced solo due to a huge world and lack of players... bad combo). I actually think that content-wise, VG was massive for a newly launched MMORPG.

I will definitly try AoC and, of course, if the gameplay grabs me I will stay. I am not really interested in super levels of content from day 1... Just enough to keep me occupied is fine and AoC seems to have that and more with what it is offering.

As for giving up my current MMORPG to play it? Well.. I havent actually played a MMORPG for over 3 moths due to various factors, but yes I was thinking this morning it is time I should just cancel my EQ2 account and be done with it.

I never would compare AoC with anything. Its not released and i dindnt play it. Of couse there are some games with the potential to grow over the next years. LotRo is one of them.

How to explain... its a bit abstract. Lets reduce a game and look what is there. If i do so with LotRo there is solo combat/questing, group combat and questing, crafting, raiding, roleplaying, housing, traits grinding, MPvP, and the mini collection for stuffed animals. Thats 9 points to do. From those 9 points housing is... erm... cheap and useless. Traits are almost not worth it to grind them. Crafting is fast and easy and the stuffed animals are really just a mini game. Roleplaying is roleplaying and can be done in any game without dedicated mechanics and programming. That leaves solo questing, group quetsing, raid and MPvP. The whole game is based on only four paths. Solo questing ends somewhere at 35 (well, i hear Turbine is doing soemthing here), that leaves an endgame based on 3 progression paths.  If you are no PvPer you are stuck with two paths. Raid is guild content with fixed dates like friday 19:00 raid. For the rest of the time all you can do ist LFG.

I know, its a bit a simplified math. But i hope you get the idea behind it.

EQ2 is quite similar. But it has a real deep housing including the collections for housing items, it has a spell/combat art progression and a 2nd crafter profession. Lets be cheap and give EQ2 for those three things only one point more. Its still one point ahead of LotRo.

Vanguard. If you have a few good friends who like to explore you can visit a gazillion of dungeons and mini dungeons. Solo content is a bit thin. Its has raids, a very grindy crafting. Housing is quite detailed. Not like EQ2 but similar in its own way. It has no 2nd profession and no spell/CA progression. All you can do is raid at fixed times or LFG. Same level as LotRo.

Ok, my simplified reduction gives LotRo 1 point, EQ2 2 points and vanguard 1 point. The points stand for things you can do in a game in the long run. Although EQ2 wins its a poor result. A 2008 AAA game should be probably somewhere near 5 or even 10 points. With some luck AoC probably hits the 3 point mark and, if they are good, the 4 point mark with the first expansion. Depends on how many point the community can handle ;)

You can only play World of Warcraft for so long before you look for something new, but I will say that if you worry about any game taking away more players, I'd worry about Warhammer more than Age of Conan.  It will take more World of Warcraft players than Age of Conan does, I think EQ2 players might stray towards AOC more than WAR, but we'll see.

  • I'll be giving it a try along with four or five friends from EQ2.  We're looking forward to it.  However, we will be trying SGW when that comes out if AoC flops.  I don't think it will; however, the first few months might be rocky.  It is a new game after all, and some bugs are bound to crop up.  It's just a risk that you have to be willing to take with a new product.  If you're not sure, give it a few months after launch to see how other players feel about it.

I got into the Warhammer beta and even though I can't say anything due to the NDA, I pray that Conan lives up to the hype because i won't be buying Warhammer, that's for sure.  Matter of fact, it's uninstalled from my machine withing a week of trying it.  If not, then i'm going to call it quits with MMO's all together.  So far i'm not impressed.  If Conans combat system totally blows, I won't be playing it.  I got an awesome computer, so i won't have any problems playing it.  I can practically run Skynet with this computer.  So far the only MMO's IMO worth stickin with now are WoW and EQ2.

A week? Good job on stealing and wasting a beta spot from someone whom would actually provide feedback to make the game better.....considering it isn't even slated for a specific release date yet.

  • vingvegavingvega Member Posts: 577

Yeah a week.  The input I gave would require them to redo the whole game.  And quit whinning about not getting into beta.  If you want an MMO that basically holds your hand on set paths, then warhammer is for you.   Play WoW on 800x600 set on all low settings and ya have Warhammer online.

Last week it was your friend that was in WAR beta when you posted:

"My friend was in the beta and told me he installed it, played for two days and uninstalled it.  He said it was like a dumb downed version of WoW.  He said you follow the quests on a set path and there is no point going anywhere else because the quests basically hold your hand all the way to the next quest collection point.  And in between they have a raid going on you can p articipate in.  I don't know i wanted to get into the beta to test it out myself.  I don't like believing what other people say.  But I think I may just wait for AOC."
