Should MMOs have mini games inside?

Do you think MMOs should have mini games inside?   Like a casino where you can play poker in a fantasy game?  Or a bowling alley in a sci fi?  Or a cart race?   Other things to do when you don't want to fight, quest or craft?

MMOs should incorporate mini-games of all aspect.  I always believe MMOs can become a simulation of real life with a different theme (fantasy, sci fi, etc...), so having mini-games would build on that experience and help players to see the MMOs not as just a game, but a living world.

    Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR

Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)

Sure, anything that can make the game different.  A casino in a game would be cool, or other mini games, mount racing, anything that would be fun.

I think its more in the execution.  There have been many bad attempts that try to use the existing engine, with its limitations.  It doesn't feel like you are playing a mini-game but clicking next through a wall of text.  If they were to add something like the mini-games in Final Fantasy 7, that seem like a different game then what you are playing then it can be very successful.

Actually I am amazed that traditional MMO's haven't already done it.

Our knothead devs seem to be crazy glued on killing 10 rats, raids and capture the flag.

Off the top of my head I think KotOR did a lot of that sort of thing. You could play cards, race and some other stuff. I would love to play some virtual betting game against other MMO players. Why not? I thought SWG (or any MMO) would have been a great setting for that. Instead we got unlimited Bol hunting back in the day. I think there were casinos in SWG but I remember them only letting you bet 5 cr at a time which was a complete waste of time...if I remember correctly.

Lineage 2 has the "monster race track". That was fun, I did win some money doing that.

Other then that, racing would be nice. I hate racing games but sure I would do it for fun on the side in an MMO. Pod racing in SWG makes sense...horse racing in other fantasy games works...

What about "jousting"???? That would be sweet.

There is pretty much an unlimited stream of ideas you could throw out there....But I'm sure devs will rather load up on more rat killing. What a waste of a genre.

Dancing in "Sid Meyers Pirates" was a hoot....

The diplomacy adventure sphere in Vanguard is pretty fun. I think EQ2 put in a CCG in their game. There could be so much more to MMO's then whackin rats.

I believe it was all part of the original "virtual world" ideas and thats why its lost on todays devs as well as players.

I think stuff like that can only add to the immersion a given game offers. For Example in the EvE Ambulation add on that's coming later , EvE players are also getting virtual shops they can design and arrange. There are also going to be player owned arenas and casinos with all sorts of Card games in them and stuff. So stuff like that just adds to the game.

It is also important to mention that the Mini games should be appropriate to the MMO in question tho otherwise it will have a tacked on feel.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

Yes! Would be fun to see "weaving" spells be done like a mini game or dodging, blocking attacks or equal; but if one wouldn't want such extreme amount of mini games you could also stick to easier versions. Having chess and other games in game would be cool and adds to realism and fun, isn't really much reason not to have it in game.

Most definitely. I adds a lot to the immersion if you can interact (play) with every single elements of the world. It's also easy to make it count toward your overall progress, so you never feel like you're wasting your time. Since character optimization and improvement is very important in a persistant world, you got to make those mini-games count in a way or another into the betterment of your Avatar. Else it just become a lame duck detracting you from your main goal.

Wether it's just betting in-game coins on a back gammon match up, or taking control of a racing car on that random track you found in the wasteland makes no difference: You "must" be able to impact the world, or your character one way or another with your mini-games. Otherwise, i see no purpose to them as they won't be worth the development time if you don't create a mechanics that makes them worth playing again and again.

Even a small game of cheese or Blackjack could be fun.... it doesn't have to be complexe. It's just a simple card game... it improves the social aspect of the game and for the RPers, it's a dream come true since these places now have a meaning.

I like Mini games if they are fun. SWG was built up of mostly mini games, some where great others no one bothered with, like the casino games. I would love to see an MMO full of cheesy min games like Mario party 8 where you could compete with other players in real-time, but it would be hard to fit those types of games in to very many MMOs. EQ2 has their arenas, but once again few use them for some reason.

Having mini games and tavern style games in MMOs are a great idea. It allows you to just kick back with friends when not in the mood to run around and PvE/PvP.

Having something like card tables where you can join up with other players and play a few hands of the games version of poker or blackjack would be fun, even if all you win is a ranking on that taverns/outposts card board.

The only down side would be walking in on some dwarven strip poker tourney...

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

IMO, they absolutely should have a ton of those games! They should have some games in context, like some card games played in Inns which reflect something about the game setting (ie fantasy/sci-fi).  You could add solo games as well.

They point is to keep people logged in and playing. It could add to the social aspsect for group games, but it wouldn't have to be a social game.  You can add in game tourneys for players, and give titles which can appear overhead.
